Please don't run from me.

Newt Scamander

This was really not a good idea. The whole idea of it though had been eating away at Porpentina the moment she really let her mind dwell on it. The last time the two were together it had been near perfect, so much so that it made a typical uneventful workday go by smoothly as ever and honestly there really wasn't anything that could have wiped the smile off her face. Except this. This was going to do just that and she already knew it.

There came a time where she was quick to learn what you should and shouldn't have said to the Magizoologist. As luck would have it, Tina had happened on the 'shouldn't' more often than she truly cared to. And yet now, there she was entirely aware that she was going to do it again -- if only to set things straight once and for all. ( She hoped. ) Was it her business? Not entirely, his own life was his to live. But then, call it rude, but when she wanted so much to be apart of it it wasn't so easy to do when someone else still seemed to linger around, even if it were only through a moving portrait.

On top of that, it was Independence day! All over Storybrooke had been posters promoting that a firework display would be done across the pond at Heritage Park. And while yes, she knew the irony of dragging an Englishmen to see fireworks on the day of America's independence from England, she also really didn't let that stop her either.

Due to the silence of the case, it was best to assume he was in there ( especially since he at least told her when he was leaving it. ) so she had to carry it along with her when her walk had brought her to the park where some other people had been gathering. As for Tina, she went for a spot more secluded where she really didn't have to feel like she was purposely putting him on the spot in front of others. She wasn't that terrible, even if he may have not even taken that into account at all.

Every so often the battered leather case brushed against her leg half covered in the fabric of her navy blue sundress. While it may have not been her greatest choice in fashion in old New York, Tina didn't quite mind it in Storybrooke, at least it was cool on an otherwise hot day. Though the sun was to go down soon, and that was when steps had come to a stop on a small hill that had overlooked the pond and the fireworks that would start at some point after sunset.

No. She really hadn't told him about it, something she failed to tell him when she had seen him earlier that morning before the two had to go on to their hopefully temporary jobs. Instead, she unrolled a powder blue blanket she had tucked under her other arm onto the soft grass and put the case on top of it before she knelt down and gave it a few firm knocks. That would get him out.

This was difficult, she could feel the butterflies already starting. How she could know that she was purposely throwing away something so good was beyond her. And yet, it had to be done hadn't it? Queenie told her only little of the lady in the picture, and yet Newt seemed so defensive with any more being brought up about her. Lost love? Girlfriend.. ? She doubted it was the latter, he hadn't seemed like the sort of man that would pull that.

But then again, Tina didn't know what to think any more. Being in love was awful, and yet glorious all at the same time.

The beauty of fire in the sky, the surprise of the evening. Just you wait.

The day hadn't been bad. Work had been slow and a half day because it was a holiday. One that he had offered to work and something he got a ribbing for from his few co-workers for. It was easy enough to tell why and it had all been in good fun, not that his boss ever seemed that keen to join in. Ever since the occamy incident, the man had given Newt something of a wide berth whenever possible. Ironic really, considering it had been the man's fault in the first place. Not that Newt had wanted to scare him.

Being back in the case just after lunchtime was a treat. Not that he had plans to sit around with his feet up (although a chapter or two of the latest novel he was reading couldn't hurt), there were more important things to do. Mending this, planting that, checking how Poppy's pregnancy was going, and collecting a few more loose hairs from Dougal. It was the comfortable routine he enjoyed, made him think that just for a while he wasn't trapped. Which it wasn't all bad, not with the pleasant time spent with Tina. Although, he hadn't seen all that much of her today not that they were in each others pockets. There was no real need to see her every second, even if he did like to see her.

Between the reading and working, it was well into the evening by the time he stopped. While they didn't discuss dinner plans (although there were times it was just seeing who wanted to get the takeaway from the diner or raiding his icebox for leftovers) it seemed easier, even if she had already eaten, if he just got a bite out tonight. Not his favourite option but it was better than starvation - if only by a little. First a bath and clean clothes were in order, having dirt up to his elbows and dirt, grass and other plant matter stuck to his clothes just made him look like some low budget swamp creature.

Feeling more human again, he paused, half dressed, to study himself in the mirror. Or rather his hair, sections of which were slowly developing a mind of their own. Newt fished out his enchanted scissors, one of several items he never traveled without. Actually having one's hair done by a barber seemed silly compared to the quick sip sip of magic which left his hair more tidy even if very little had been cut.

In the stillness of the case, the creatures quiet and content, the knock on the case seemed to almost echo. Normally he wouldn't have heard it that well, unless Tina was cross with him about something. Heaven forbid! Slipping on one of the five shirts he owned (which all looked alike if you were wondering!) over his head and tugging his boots on as he made his way out one door, he made his way to the stairs.

What he expected on the other side of the case, as he ascended the stairs, was not what he got. In fact the sheer look of surprise on his face was hard to miss as he stepped out of the case and locked it up again, as he always did. "I didn't know we were going out." Apparently Newt once again had forgotten how to say hello first.

Newt took in the scene, actually turning around on the spot to see everything. Obviously, they were here to celebrate though why she didn't tell him, he really didn't know. While it was different, it wasn't all that much from Bonfire Night. Well, all the fireworks anyway. Turning his focus back on Tina he couldn't help but notice her expression. She looked so serious! Even for her... "Is everything alright, Tina?" Maybe he shouldn't have asked and maybe it was as simple as the fact that she stubbed her toe again. And yet... he couldn't help but feel that it was much more serious than that.

Please don't run from me.

Newt Scamander

The day itself had been nice, but seeing him made it all the more nicer.. even if it may not last as long as she would have liked. A nervous laugh left her lips when he brought up that he hadn't known they were going out. She really hadn't expected to, until a last minute decision had put it all together. " No, I didn't tell you. I'm sorry. There's some fireworks tonight, and I really had to get something off my chest. " She had said, a deep breath brushing between her lips. She leaned back a bit so that she was sitting with her legs curled just beneath her when she soothed out the sundress she was wearing.

" It's nothing terrible, I don't think. " For all the stuff that she had done, this was one of the worse. It wasn't that it was bad! At least, it shouldn't have been bad. But a part of her already knew how this was going to play out. Just like before when she had mentioned that, or she mentioned Theseus, or his Mother, there was always something that seemed to make him unhappy, and that wast he last thing that Tina had ever wanted to see.

She patted beside her on that blanket for him to sit, and if he chose to do so she had leaned a little against him. " I don't want you to go away. Just listen to me. " Go away could mean literally, or just him no longer wanting to be around her. There was no good actual outcome in either, and both had been something that made Tina a bit misty-eyed in just thinking about it.

Her stomach was in knots, rightfully so. It was really time she got to know some of those things about him that he chose to keep away from her, especially when he had already known things about her, like with Credence, that were supposed to be unknown to all. She swallowed hard though after biting her lip slightly she finally forced some of the words out. " Who exactly is Leta Lestrange? " And if he asked who again, she'd gladly tell him it's the girl he's got a picture of sitting in his living space. " Is she back in London, waiting for you? " That one was tough, that one actually made her voice crack when she mentioned it out loud. Somehow, words in her head sounded a lot less hurtful than when they were spoken out there into the open.

Oh, there were fireworks still.. just those hadn't started yet. Tina failed to mention that it were fireworks.. before actual fireworks. In fact, after she had said what she had to say, her attention fell on the sun that was in the midst of setting. Figures, a perfectly romantic moment and she managed to ruin it by forcing him to open up about something he had put walls around since she had known him.

Yeah, Tina Goldstein was as romantic as they came, about as romantic as a rock maybe. For now she'd just have to take the ego shot, especially with her attention being far more on Newt than it being on her own mistakes. " I just want to know.. " There was more, words had ended long before she finished with the originally intended ' before she got too far into it. ' It being pretty obvious. The last thing she needed was just walking into heart break, even if she may have already set herself up for it.

Not a pleasant surprise.

The fireworks were something of a surprise, even if he preferred to know about things in advance. Normally anyway. Considering the last time she had knocked on his case, he was in MACUSA headquarters. Honestly the woman liked to keep him guessing at least this time he wasn't getting arrested and facing the charge of treason. Instead, they were sat at a celebration of what had been high treason of the day. Ironic really. Although the fact that there was something that she wanted to get off her chest had him a little worried. Such conversations never seemed to go well. Maybe now that she had thought about it, she wanted to slap him for kissing her.

Nonetheless, he did sit down next to her. His case just off the blanket but in eyesight. Whatever question she wanted to ask had to be serious. Newt couldn't help but worry, ironically, he worried less when she was yelling at him but not now. Looking at her curiously he prepared himself for what she had to say. Even though she had labeled it as something not terrible, he wasn't that sure if she was also expecting him to walk away. At the very least she was setting up some pretty terrible ideas in his head as to what it could be!

However, of all the questions in the world, Newt hadn't expected that one. Opening his mouth to speak and then closing it again, asking who hadn't done much last time. They both knew who Leta Lestrange was, even if one knew more than the other. As much as he wanted to get up and walk away, his legs seemed to disagree. Every inch of him did, actually, as if the question had numbed him - he certainly forgot to breathe for a few seconds, and when he finally took a breath it was shallow, his lungs protested. Looking at Tina wasn't in the cards, considering he could barely breathe, a little ant crawling through the blades of grass by the blanket had his focus.

"She's - She's no one." Newt mumbled, his voice disappearing along with everything else. Although, Tina's remark that Leta was waiting for him got the briefest of glances - shocked, hurt maybe? He wasn't starched enough to keep the pain away... and that hurt. Worse than the effects of doxy venom, worse than any external scar he had. "She's not waiting for me, no." If only he could catch his damn breath! "Her and Theseus are..." Newt trailed off, he couldn't say that word! How could his brother have done that anyway? "I wanted to tell him not to get involved with her but he won't listen to me." After all, what did the younger brother know? His words danced on the edge of bitter. If only Theseus didn't think himself so much smarter than his wayward sibling.

One is the loneliest number

Newt Scamander

" She's more than a no one, why else would you carry a picture around. " that was.. a terrible response from him. A part of her had been more upset that he even could say that knowing full well that he kept that picture around too! He'd may as well just be honest! But, it wasn't like she was interrogating him, this wasn't work, this was her.. no their actual lives there. Queenie said Leta left him hurting, so wasn't it only fair that Tina try and help him?

At least she saw it as that, even if the more she tried, the more it seemed like it was a punishment for herself instead. The last thing she wanted was for him to hate her, or even worse, to have seen that maybe Leta still played quite the role in his life. And so that led to one simple thing. Where exactly did that even leave her? A part of her hadn't even wanted to know more, but then when he decided to talk more she found herself having to force her ears to listen.

When he mentioned Theseus, she began to wonder if this hadn't been part of what he had said in the forest when the two had crossed paths again. " She's engaged to your brother. " He can't say it? She can. In fact the words rolled right off of her tongue when mocha eyes had looked at him despite his unwillingness to even face her. " You care about your brother's fiancee?! " That hurt, but then a lot of what she was hearing and even saying had been an instant punch in the heart.

It all made so much more sense, all the way to how he had spoken of his brother to now even that apparent care for Leta. " Oh I get it. You saw her first.. " That may have been a little mean, but then it hadn't sounded any better the way it played out in her mind either. Maybe there was a tinge of jealousy there, that Tina really thought she was stepping into the impossible to be pushed back out to that reality that she was still very much alone after all.

" I - I didn't mean it like that. " Deep breath. Just hold it together. For all the times she had yelled at him, this hadn't been one of them. In fact, while she was a bit angry too, there was that gut wretching sadness instead that had been coming out more than anything. For all the time she had spent watching him with every expectation that he'd at least look and face her, she finally looked away and towards the pond. It made it a lot easier to not face him, more so when she bit her lip to prevent more from coming out.

She had to remind herself again that she wasn't here to force everything out of him, she only wanted to know him more, know what it was about that girl behind the picture frame and what made her so important that he kept it despite having little to no contact with her. A part of her had thought that maybe she was just dead and gone, but it wasn't the truth. Leta was alive and well somewhere. " Queenie said you were hurt by something, I wanted to try and help, and I wanted to see where I fell into all of this. "

Was he angry? Did he hate her? She took a deep breath and eyes that had been resisting some tears from an uglier truth that he did still very much care about Leta had looked back. A hand reached out and gently touched his arm for some sort of comfort, even if it really wasn't much, but then he hadn't really told her all that much either. Yet, somehow it was plenty.

Someone upset the Hufflepuff.

Tina just wouldn't let it go. Why couldn't she just let it go? No less numb from the first question, he couldn't help but wonder if he could find the strength to get into his case and be left the hell alone. Something that seemed damn near impossible at the rate things were going. Still, it was nothing that he opted to answer. There was too much to explain. Too many things and somehow he doubted that she'd even believe him even if he did tell the truth. No one seemed keen to believe him any other time. Not with things like that, not unless he was useful for the cause.

Newt visibly flinched as Tina finished the sentence that he could not. Maybe not being able to say it made him petty. Maybe he should have been happy for them. But he wasn't. While he and his brother didn't always see eye to eye the last thing Newt wanted was for him to get into a mess of trouble because of that woman. Because that's what she did. She got in people's heads and played with them like puppets in a show. How in the hell he could have been that blind, he wasn't sure!

The mere idea that Tina thought it was a possessive game, annoyed him, anger bubbled even. "Because she set me up!" His gaze had snapped to her, words coming out louder than he had intended. Hell, he had shouted them gaining looks from the people around them, how ever briefly. At a much more pleasant level of volume that sounded weak by comparison, he added a bitter. "I was almost expelled because of her." First the first time since that fateful day had happened, he spoke the truth. Angrier than perhaps he should have been and saying it didn't actually make him feel any better.

Newt turned his attention back to the grass or any passing insect. Honestly, he had no desire to look at her, not with the memories floating to the surface. Wasn't he in enough pain? Why did people insist on making things worse for him? Then it was bad enough, he had very nearly lost everything and the fines he had ended up paying would have gone a lot farther in some important aspect of his life.

Whether Tina actually didn't mean the words the way they had come out was something that had yet to be seen, perhaps it was more that she didn't expect that reaction from him. Something he guessed farther when Queenie was brought into the picture. Any other time he had nothing against that witch but the here and now? He couldn't have found himself any less angry with her. He hadn't asked her to read his mind and then she goes off and blabs to her sister first chance? Blah! He had nothing to say to that!

One is the loneliest number

Newt Scamander

For all they had dealt with, it was the first time she had really seen him angry. There hadn't been a part of her either that liked it. Maybe she had deserved it, all the while this had turned into more and more of a bad idea and now the idea itself had been terrible. A big part of her just considered getting up and leaving, letting him have his space, and then going back to Leta if they ever left that damn town they were stuck in. Yet, she couldn't do it. Rather, she would have just heard the very truth of how Leta had been so cruel to him, yet not cruel enough that he still had some kind of reason to carry her picture around.

In a flash, she was glad he hadn't been looking around. She leaned back which created a space from the two of them when the warm stream of tears started falling along her cheeks and she found herself in quite the position that she to comfort Queenie in time and time again. Her sister had a bad relationship record, most never working out due to her mind reading abilities, and now with what she considered help, was just about the same thing happening.

That hadn't taken away what happened to him though. It was all about him, her own worries weren't something she wanted to dwell on until she was on her own again, which may have been sooner rather than later. An arm ran along her face to get rid of tears and voice spoke forth in a softer tone to counter the louder usage of his. " I'm sorry, Newt. " How could she do that? She couldn't imagine wanting to hurt him, even if there she was doing it by just mentioning one person.

" I don't know how she could have done that, it's a terrible thing to do. " There she was, sad for that reality check, and his own admission to a role that Leta had played, one that very well had Tina wishing she could meet her, at least just once to teach her a thing or two. " And.. I'm sorry for this. I thought it would have gone easier. " If he wanted to stay, she would have loved it. But then she couldn't see him actually wanting to do so. " You can just go if you would rather. " While she had touched him, that touch was long since gone when she pulled her hand back, assuming he didn't' want to be near her at that point. No, that look he made was plenty.

Her tone stayed low, a soft and for once defeated voice that offered him a chance to run again. " I.. would like it if you did stay. " Not that it meant a damn thing to him. Her gaze had fallen on him again and a part of her had wondered if she shouldn't just try again to reach him, at this point what was the use? He already had hated her now, she managed to throw away something so perfect in a matter of minutes. " I hate seeing you sad, Newt. I wanted to try and help you, sometimes the best way to do it is to just talk about it. You shouldn't have to carry it all on your own. " That was the truth, no bitter no heartbreak, just her wanting to help him. " You've already helped me enough, it's time I help you. "

Just the sort of story for your future girlfriend.

It wasn't fair. Not the fact that she had brought up painful memories for him, not that her sister blabbed, the reality was he shouldn't have snapped at her. None of what happened was her fault. Even after she gave him two chances to leave, he didn't move. Finally his gaze turned to her, properly, and the realization that he had made her cry. "Oh, Tina." The anger melted, somewhere he was still annoyed but not with her. Not really. Newt paused to wipe away the remains of the tears with his shirt sleeve. Had someone told him they were going out he would have been dressed smarter and had a handkerchief but he had to make due instead. "Please don't cry." He couldn't stand to see her cry.

While he still couldn't bring himself to smile, he knew she meant well. Just as Queenie had (even if he didn't like her in his mind) any other time in his life no one seemed to care. All except maybe Dumbledore. But actually wanting to know, actually wondering what happened. Even his mother hadn't cared to hear his side of the story. Well, not the true story. She had been far too offended that he had gotten the family name in the paper for several crimes and that he faced expulsion. Theseus never got into trouble...

Was it bad that he wanted to tell her? Tell someone? It wouldn't change the record, the Ministry wasn't about to give all that money back they fined him. It wasn't going to make a difference except for maybe how he felt. Maybe. "Are you sure?" Better to give her the chance to change her mind now, whether it'd make her look at him any differently was something he'd have to wait and see. He certainly hoped it wouldn't change things. Not when he really did like her.

Newt took a deep breath, and barely registered the fact that he had slipped an arm about her, tugging her just a little closer. A bit like a child with a comforting teddy bear (or personally he had a stuffed hippogriff that was enchanted to change colours) although with a story like this, he needed the extra warmth. With a certain reluctance in his voice, he began.

"We were good friends in school, Leta and me." In fact, one of his only friends. "She had an interest in magical creatures and she was fun to be around." He paused, "Until we, uh, started dating..." He could see no point in going into every little detail of that. Somehow he doubted that Tina was all that keen to hear about it either. Some of it was just downright embarrassing and better left where no one could find it.

Newt couldn't quite bring himself to actually look at Tina, instead he opted to look out over the pond and the millings of other people. "I should have listened to Dumbledore but I was in love and stupid." It felt like he was shouting the words but maybe he wasn't. It still seemed like something off the back of one of those books in that romantic section of the library he had wandered through only to put books back. "Leta smuggled a jarvey into the school. She thought it was fascinating and was sure she could teach it tricks." Honestly he wasn't sure if that was the truth or a lie. Not that it really mattered, he had been too wrapped around her finger to see the truth even if it was there.

"It got out and attacked one of the first year Ravenclaws." Newt could remember that day as if it were yesterday, that look Leta had given him, that bite of her lip. Why couldn't he have resisted? Why could he have not seen that he was being played? Not when he would have simply faced detention (no doubt for the rest of the year!) had he just come clean. "I said it was mine. That I had gotten it to study and Leta didn't try to stop me." She didn't do anything. She just smirked because she knew he was in too deep and it was her word against his the second he took the blame. It was then he knew, he had been manipulated, that she didn't care about him or even that first year that her creature had attacked.

"I would have been expelled if not for Dumbledore. He spoke on my behalf at the trial." He would forever be grateful to Dumbledore for everything the man had done for him. In fact, there had been a few professors who stuck by him. Friends, not a one. Even his own housemates turned on him. "She and most of the school stopped talking to me when I got back." It was anyone's guess what the rumour mill had said about him in his absence, he never did find out what, not with the silent treatment everyone gave him. Any normal person would have left after that kind of abuse but for some reason he had stuck it out. Maybe if only to prove he could graduate.

And after all that, he still kept her damn picture! It wasn't love that held him but regret. With his story done, it only then dawned on him that he was a bit misty eyed, leaning on Tina harder than he perhaps should have. He wiped his eyes, somehow it felt like he had been speaking for hours and it was little more than a few sentences. An unpleasant trip down memory lane it was anyway. While he wasn't a blubbering mess, his expression spoke volumes as did the odd sniffle but it could have been so much worse.

Realising that he was just shy of hugging her, Newt sat up properly, releasing her. Squeezing the stuffing out of Tina certainly wouldn't change anything! "Sorry." He mumbled. Allowing a certain amount silence to fall between them, he just watched the setting sun. An idyllic scene if he wasn't pouring his guts out about his ex-girlfriend to his possible girlfri -- Tina. "And then she goes and gets engaged to my brother." Hey, he actually said it! Even if the words were icy and he blotted his eyes again. At least, Tina was still there with him, she hadn't made her escape much like the one she had offered him. That was something and he'd take it.

i prefer to keep my stuffing, thank you.

Newt Scamander

" It was a stupid idea, I was trying to help and it went badly. " And while she didn't regret trying to help, a part of her regretted how it was turning out. Although, it hadn't helped that he had taken notice of her tears, only furthering the humiliation that he had now been fully aware that she was there crying when it was him she had been trying to help all along! It caused for a laugh, a short lived laugh that came out due to her being more nervous than anything when his sleeve moved along her face to wipe away the tears that had started falling.

She heard him ask that she not cry, and that really didn't help! Since it only made for more tears! " Sorry, so sorry. " Words had been muttered through the crack of her voice when she shook her head. Queenie may have been fortunate enough to be gifted with legilimency. Porpentina just cried sometimes, over happy things, sad things, whatever. She couldn't quite help it.

Which instead of apologizing, which she was on the verge of doing again he had asked her something that mattered a lot. " Of course i'm sure. " Everything she said she had meant, that meant if she had to stand there all night if he started from the minute he could walk to now of things that had bothered him, than she was very well ready to deal with it. She had distanced herself from him, something that came to a quick end when he had pulled her closer. She fixed her dress some but leaned her head against his shoulder while the last of the tears along her cheeks may have finally decided to stop.

What else to do? She only could listen, listen to how it sounded like any typical teenage love story. ( She wouldn't know, she really didn't meddle in them. ), all up until the incident with the jarvey and a poor child that was attacked by it! " Oh, Newt. " Why did he take the blame? He should have let her go down for it, if only for the poor Ravenclaw that was caught in it all. Those words weren't brought up, since she could tell why it was he had let himself get set up like that. He was so compassionate, towards anyone who he cared about. Leta abused that in him and while she hadn't known the woman, she had already been hurt once by the anger caused by her indirectly, and for all that she did to Newt, she could honestly say she hated Leta Lestrange with a passion.

Here's to hoping that Newt needed plus one to the wedding, imagine the surprise when she may accidentally feel the need to hit the woman. But, she could only get hers in the end. At least that was what Tina believed. " I've heard of Dumbledore, I'm glad that he was able to help you. He probably knew that you couldn't possibly have really done that! " she couldn't imagine Newt playing a part in hurting someone, at least not someone who had been innocent! It was all ridiculous that such a thing even had to be considered!

The change in his voice hadn't gone unnoticed either, in fact, it made her almost immediately look up from that rather tight half hug he had been unknowingly putting her into. Although it only felt like a few seconds that he had let her go, but that expression on his face and misty eyes had still been there. " Don't apologize to me. " And then while he had made that space between them again, she had gone back with arms wrapping around him. It lasted for more then a ten seconds, so many it was another one of those not-hugs there, but she really didn't care. Even more so, she really had no interest on letting go, not like she ever did. But not right now especially. Instead, fingertips gently trailed along his back and she hadn't made any other move.

Expect when she failed to notice the sky glow red, followed by a giant boom that startled her! " Oh! Fireworks! " She nearly forgot about them! Though, while she may have waited all week for them, Newt was by all means more important when she loosened that embrace on him just a little so that she could ran a couple fingers through that longer portion of his hair that was almost always threatening to get into his eyes. " You trimmed your hair. " Maybe just a little, and maybe it was a little crazy that she noticed something so simple, but she did. It was ironic, given that she had been letting her own grow a little more.

Not that she really meant to make jokes, even as the next firework behind her had gone off and she only gave the blue and white display a look over her shoulder. No-Maj magic, or at least, as close as a No-Maj may ever get. That's what fireworks were! " I'm sorry that she's marrying your brother, but if he's foolish enough to go through with it, than there's no convincing him that he's going to be sorry. " And if she could have done such a thing to Newt, than it was only her most honest and sad opinion to say that Theseus was really screwed.

At least it was nice, she sat through a sunset, even if it weren't the happiest of times. Now she was watching the fireworks. . sort of. She had still been holding on to Newt and even remained pulled back enough that she could look him in the face for as long as he was willing.

A juxtaposed night of love and tears.

"I don't know what I would have done without Professor Dumbledore." While Newt didn't actually hear what the man had to say (well not every single word) they had been kind ones and saved him from a very muggle-like existence. "He even paid my fines then... I paid him back eventually." A debt that he finally had cleared in recent years. All save one galleon, while Dumbledore had labeled those sickles Christmas gifts over the years, Newt knew that the man, his friend, had sent back some of that money. Something he hadn't noticed until one year when one particular coin was identical to one he had sent. None of it was anything Newt ever cared to call him on, if anything Dumbledore was the only one who went out of his way to show he cared. As sad as it was, no man could ever have had a better father figure.

Newt wasn't entirely sure he felt better having everything out in the open. Instead, he just felt tired, exhausted even. The weight of history did tend to have that effect on people. Knowing the truth for what it was. The simple memories of people giving him the most awful looks, talking about him in the halls like he wasn't standing there, and that time in potions, when he did that group assignment by himself because no one wanted to partner with him and it hadn't been worth the argument. Worse, had to be the fact that no one would even let him near the Ravenclaw in question. He didn't even get to apologize for the thing he didn't actually do. Instead he got resistance and cold remarks of people asking if he was there to finish the poor kid off. Unhappy memories.

Nothing he cared to voice, Tina seemed upset enough. Although they looked like quite the pair, no doubt. Thankfully they weren't right by other people. Tina's eyes didn't look that red though, a little puffy maybe. While he had done his best to keep it together, he was almost positive his eyes were red, it didn't matter how many or how few tears, his eyes always went red and the more he held it back the worse they got. Bullies in his first year had fun tormenting him about it, until they gave up sport because no one was crazy enough to go after him after he jumped the fence that housed the school hippogriffs. At least no one could see them and their obviously upset faces. It'd give someone the wrong impression.

As much as he had intended to let go of her, Tina apparently had other ideas. Not that he was complaining! Her warm, that comfort was welcome. Anything was better than how he actually felt. Maybe he felt a little relief but mostly, that numb feeling remained. He was nonetheless happy to remain in that embrace, even after the fright of the first firework! A nervous laugh left his lips, at least his heart was still working! While magic could manage bigger and more spectacular fireworks, he wasn't about to downplay the beauty of the muggle ones. Although, he was quite sure China had the win for the best but they had been doing it the longest. Whoever had been the first to think packing gunpowder in something and shooting it into the sky was a good idea, really was something of a genius.

While Newt's eyes were mostly on the sky (another welcome distraction), he wasn't unaware of the touch of her fingers. Without looking as smart as he usually did (honestly, his collar was still messed up and he hadn't actually noticed!), the single layer of fabric didn't hide the warmth. He couldn't help but smile though, looking to her, at the comment about his hair. How on earth she actually noticed was beyond him! "It was getting unruly." Although his hair always seemed to have a mind of it's own. Not that Tina seemed to care, unless her fingers through his hair was an attempt to get it to behave - which he doubted. It certainly didn't deter that smile that had found it's way back onto his face despite where the conversation had taken them.

He had to agree though even if he didn't say anything, much like someone would say in the reverse, he had to let Theseus make his own mistakes. And maybe Leta had changed, maybe. After everything Newt rather doubted any positive outcome with her, unlike the woman he was looking at now. As horrible as he felt, every second looking at her, looking into her eyes, her touch, everything pulled him into the here and now. No matter what he had thought at the time, Leta Lestrange had nothing on Tina Goldstein.

His hand reached up, running his fingers along her jawline. He missed the last firework, only seeing it through the glow it left, briefly on her skin, too much of his focus was on her. How perfect she was. "You really are beautiful, you know that?" It took a good three seconds before he realised just what he had said. "Sorry." Newt blinked, lowering his hand and keeping them very much so to himself, despite the fact she was still holding onto him. His eyes went back to looking for fireworks. It just seemed like he had crossed a line somewhere. All this talk about history - heavily featuring his ex-girlfriend, even if they only dated a few months! - and here he was telling someone else that they were pretty.

The last thing he ever wanted was for Tina to ever think less of him and some insecure part of himself was quite afraid he was getting there, one badly timed comment at a time.

Why so sorry?

Newt Scamander

She was happy someone had helped him, at least enough to pay his fines and save him from expulsion. Even if it were unfortunate that in the end he'd ultimately took the fall for a girl who betrayed him. " He's a good man. " She would have helped him, though she was an ocean apart and wouldn't have ever known him had he not happened to show up in New York one day. Funny how things worked out, weren't they? Never in a million years would she have thought she'd be sitting with someone as wonderful as him and able to share the many good and bad things that they had both been through together.

Still, had she been in Hogwarts she wondered if he would have even noticed her. A part of Tina wondered if it weren't for her good grades if she were practically invisible! People loved Queenie, she was pretty and kind. Tina was kind too, but she hadn't attracted the crowd like her sister could. Oh no. Not that she could say her years were bad, she had some friends here and there, and her time studying was well worth the graduation she was able to be a part of. " It was kind of you to do that, Newt. " Maybe she could meet Dumbledore one day. For now though, there was that whole ' getting out of Storybrooke ' thing instead.

What was most important, had been that Tina heard his story, and she could now at least see what Leta meant to him, and what she had once meant to him. But Leta wasn't the sole reason of the conversation any longer, what was had been the damage that she had left, and how she could have done such a thing to a man that Tina cared for more than anything. " Are you okay? " Yeah, she had puffy eyes. Though while any other time she would have been apologizing for looking a fright, it was more or less a concern that he really didn't look so good. And while she didn't want to purposely draw anything out of him, she also hadn't wanted to see him just going back to bottling all of that up again. " Newt, if you ever want to tell me anything, you can. I expect that I could do the same with you. "

Those fireworks continued to go, from green to red, blue, white, all the capable colors that lit up the night sky, and yet somehow her attention had been more on him even still. As for his hair, call it selfish, but Tina couldn't even say how long she had waited for a chance to just be able to twirl some locks of that more unruly portion of his hairstyle within her fingers, which she very much did! She even let out a soft, barely audible giggle to it!

" Why do you always have to apologize? " Maybe she yelled at him a little. At least not anymore than she normally did, but she had found a way to laugh after those words. " Do you really think so? " And she was a little awestruck. It wasn't everyday someone told Tina they were beautiful. At least not someone who really mattered to her. It was easy to have heard her Mother always tell her once upon a time ago, or her sister when they were looking for outfits to wear. But to have heard it from Newt, that was a whole other thing all together. " Instead of apologizing, you should say it again. " Fingertips had not so willingly left his hair alone at that point, instead brown eyes had looked to his own as a light smile tugged at her lips.

Ah to hell with it, she was just going to end up missing the fireworks anyway that were going off behind her! She'd had a whole lot more to see in front of her instead. Think less of him though? Please. There was a big part of Tina that really didn't think that such a thing could even be possible. Maybe she should move though, rather than blocking his own view of the fireworks mostly. And so she did finally turn a little, at least enough that she could scoot up just alongside him. A bit close by, but enough that she was out of his way. Out of his personal space? Not so much there.

A juxtaposed night of love and tears.

Newt couldn't agree more, Dumbledore was a good man. It wasn't like he had to do any of that. That wasn't even counting the time he took out to get back to Hogwarts and those hours of tutoring, mostly over the Christmas holidays, just so he could get caught back up in his classes. If anything, Dumbledore was a great man. "I was going to pay him back." Newt repeated, maybe a little too quickly. "That was the deal... Mother wasn't willing to pay them." And she wasn't. In fact, they barely spoke until sometime later, subtracting the number of times he got a howler from her - how she could manage that much yelling over such a short about of time, he wasn't entirely sure. But at least Dumbledore had stepped up, seeing as the Ministry wasn't that forgiving with fines. They tended to want their money even when he had a whole four sickles in savings.

Of course, the look on his face, probably those red eyes too, had caught Tina's attention. "I'm fine - or I will be." A lie and then the truth. At least no one else had really bothered to notice him, spared him the awkward questions and remarks. He had no intention of telling the the whole of Storybrooke the tragic tale of his first and only girlfriend. No matter what was on muggle television sets these days, he didn't consider that any form of entertainment. "Thank you, Tina." Maybe he didn't have to thank her for being willing to listen to his rambling but he nonetheless, was. Considering the amount of lying he had done to her when they first met, this was progress! Even if those had been lies to protect his creatures instead of something more subversive.

Her obsession with his hair was something he didn't quite understand but with the sheer number of times he had touched or made an attempt to push those strands behind her ear, it was only fair. It didn't bother him in the least, in fact, if he was really honest, he liked it. Although apparently it did make him blurt out things that he very nearly wanted to keep unsaid for the time being.

Despite her tone with the question, Newt couldn't stop one quiet laugh. Why did he apologize all the time? Actually, he could have a guess as to why but it seemed better not to dwell back in the past again. No, now it had become something of an annoying habit. Another one. His face did burst into a proper grin at the rest of what she had to say. "Of course, I thought you were beautiful the first time I saw you." Oddly enough the first word out of his mouth then had been an apology too! Although he should have been watching where he was walking in the first place but New York had so many new sights to take in and he hadn't intended to be there long. Three - four hours tops and he was going to be on the train heading west. Sure there were faster, magical ways to travel but the fun was in the journey. Alas, niffler had gotten different ideas in his head.

The fireworks had become secondary now, even if Tina had been kind enough to slide over to give him a better view of the blues, greens, reds, yellows, and one combination of purple and white. While he had paused to watch a few, most of his attention had been on her. Newt could barely take his eyes off her, of course, how could he? She was just... perfect. Everyone else was welcome to the fire show, he didn't need it. After his first Bonfire Night when he was six, fireworks all seemed the same. Well, maybe that wasn't true. He was pretty sure things were a touch safer then considering the distance they had put between the crowd and the nerve center of the operation.

Newt couldn't help but be a little happy. It was a wonderful night, tears aside, it was a joyous celebration of treason (alright so he did find that funny), people were having a good time around them - or so he was going to guess - and he just so happened to be there with the prettiest girl in Storybrooke. He could feel as silly as he wanted with those thoughts. For now, he was going to enjoy it too even if he was starting to remember how hungry he actually was. Food could wait a few minutes more though, first he just had to do something. Cupping her face with his hand, he had to kiss her - no matter how overused that and fireworks were. At least he managed not to apologize this time!

As much as he didn't want to get up, he had to. Seeing as most people had the sense to back a picnic, his wasn't much different except it was a lot like stepping into the basket to get something instead of pulling something out. "I haven't eaten since lunch." He hated to ruin the moment, "Want a sandwich or something?" After all, it was rude to go get something out of the case and not ask. Really, he wasn't even sure what he was going to throw together but there were options even if mostly everyone else had set ideas on what to pack for such an event. He wasn't most people and that was something he was alright with.

Why so sorry?

Newt Scamander

" Well, you sound like you're a much better person than your Mother may be. " Well, yeah. He kind of made that point clear in all that he had to say about the woman, though the words had been soft and Tina really wasn't bad mouthing her, but just making an all too obvious observance to the things she had heard. One thing was certain, if she ever did happen to meet Mrs. Scamander, it was pretty clear that the woman may not care for her! Stupid things to think about, but then, Tina was satisfied enough that they were in her head and not out there where Newt could have known.

" I hope so, but just in case, I'm not going anywhere. " The whole bad portion of the night had been her fault and her fault alone. A part of her still felt that sting of guilt that she had let her own concerns and mixed emotions really risk ruining something that so far had been wonderful. It seemed to have recovered though, and with no help from the fireworks really either. ( They were still pretty too look at at least. ) " Next time I'll try and plan something out better, but the fireworks were pretty. Even if it's traitor day to you, right? " She smirked, though she hadn't doubted that it had crossed his mind once or twice. She couldn't say she really knew many British people, but she didn't see them really rushing to celebrate Independence day at all!

" Thanks for staying, even with everything. I really didn't want to be by myself. " While she should have been used to it, being alone really wasn't the greatest feeling ever. It was nice to have someone to talk to, someone to be close to, basically everything that Tina's life really lacked despite having her sister there with her all along. It was just one of those things that she could be in a crowd of people and yet she still felt alone.

She was holding him up though, babbling on with absolutely nothing that he really had to care about other than her gratitude for him being there. " I arrested you! " At least he had made her laugh, she had made it a point that day to bring him in, especially after with all of the spiraling out of control that happened with Jacob and his creatures! And oh, that day was a mess!

She had looked down for a moment as fingertip traced along the soft blanket she had laid out. As it were, she only looked up just in time for herself to be caught in a surprise kiss by him. Like with most, it was done before she had even really realized it had happened, but it hadn't removed the smile still! If anything, she was thankful it was dark, given that he couldn't see the blushing that came from her. Yes, even still after a few kisses between them, it was quite possible to make Tina Goldstein blush!

" I'm a little hungry. " Not too much, but if he offered than who was she to say no? A part of Tina had considered just going to the diner for some cake or something, but then the offer when those fireworks started to wear down that he may stay there longer with her? That far outweighed walking to the diner instead. " I'll wait here? " Unless he needed her to go, which in that case she could just fold up the blanket and be on her way.

Maybe it could be a quickly thrown together picnic in the dark too, because why not? It wasn't like it was complete pitch dark, the moon was out and the opened sky above had plenty of stars when the fireworks had all lessened.

A juxtaposed night of love and tears.

"She's just proud." As much as he didn't want to defend his mother and some of her actions that was the truth. She was a difficult woman at the best of times, at the worst, she sent a lot of howlers and wouldn't let him in the house for a while. Maybe she should have behaved differently, maybe she should have supported him instead of looking at how everything affected her, but you couldn't change the past. "Everything turned out for the best." Even if she did like Theseus more.

Newt was pretty happy with how his life had gone so far, sure he had to work his way up from the bottom and there was a certain irony that he now worked in the department that was called out when things went wrong with that jarvey, but his life so far hadn't been a bad one. Sometimes he wished Niffler would behave more but had he, it was just possible that he and Tina would have never seen each other again. No part of him was willing to trade any of that, even if he nearly got executed for treason.

"It'd be better if I was dressed for it." He couldn't help but reply, thankfully it was dark and everyone seemed to have their eyes on the sky and not the fact that he was horribly dressed. Newt couldn't help but chuckle at her remark though. Traitor day. "I did have an ancestor on my mother's side at the Boston Tea Party." Not that it really was much of a party and while he understood the whole history and reasoning behind it all, it had been a waste of perfectly good tea. "I don't mind though." Honestly he'd sit through just about anything as long as Tina was there and what was some harmless fireworks anyway?

He smiled, "Takes more than that to be rid of me." As even Leta found out when he was standing there in Hogwarts again. The look she had given him was most definitely one of shock. Apparently, it wasn't that simple to shake off Newt Scamander. Although it would have been completely different if Tina had wanted him to go. Something he very much so preferred against. She was so nice to be around.

Alright, so she did end up arresting him. They both knew it and somehow it had gotten rather humorous although that seemed to be the case for most stories once you were on the backside of them. "Not right off!" He grinned. So the first time they actually spoke, aside from that apology, she arrested him. Mustard on her lip and all. Made her no less beautiful even though she did have a strange habit of not breathing when she was that angry. Thankfully she hadn't passed out on him. That was just what he would have needed.

Maybe he shouldn't have kissed her again, but he couldn't help himself. Newt could hardly blame it on the setting, considering last time had been as mundane as being in a suitcase could be. It had to be her. She brought it out in him for some reason. Not an unknown reason but still a reason. Hopefully, it wasn't becoming annoying but considering she had yet to push him away, well... It wasn't all bad. Even if the whole thing had an ill timed sandwich run, there was nothing he could really complain about. Newt nodded at her, "I'll be back in a jiffy." he replied and disappeared into the case.

Some might have labeled his absence a little longer than a jiffy - whatever that was anyway - but he returned nonetheless carrying a small tray. While it lacked the appearance of the standard picnic fare, it wasn't entirely unappealing either, if he said so himself. Several sandwiches of thinly sliced meatloaf on wheat bread, a small bowl of mixed fruit, a salad (which may more may not have been raided from one of the cold frames intended for the creatures), as well as the required bowls for that, and two glass bottles of water - one of which he offered to Tina after he closed up the case and sat down next to her again, placing the tray within easy reach between them.

So it wasn't the perfect picnic and he was pretty sure he missed the finale, with the number of people that were slowly filtering away but Newt didn't mind that, not if Tina was willing to sit there a while longer. He certainly wasn't ready to call it a night at least. He studied Tina in the moonlight, people could think them crazy for sitting in the dark all they wanted but it wasn't that hard to see, and grabbed himself a sandwich. "Did you used to do this with your parents? Before they, uh..." Of course, she knew they were dead, who he was sparing the feelings of by not saying it, he wasn't quite sure. Newt was nonetheless curious about it, here he had been chattering on about his mother and select things and he knew very little about hers aside from the dying thing. "Unless you'd rather not talk about that, I mean, I wouldn't want to upset you, I..." Sighing, he took a bite of his sandwich, at least to stop himself from talking.

An old tradition reborn.

Newt Scamander

Newt Scamander almost never stayed still. First he would talk, and talk some more. and when Tina went to answer, he was already telling her that he'd be back ' in a jiffy ' and was off and back in his case! With his Mother, she was at least happy to hear that he was willing to just say that everything had turned out well. While it hadn't sounded like he may have had the most supportive family, he could have had it so much worse. And if he really wished to press that, she could easily remind him of Credence. That boy hadn't deserved anything he was put through. Not that she saw Newt ever trying to do so. He seemed happy, and if he was happy, it made Tina happy. And while he chose to complain about his appearance, Tina brushed it off. Maybe he hadn't been in his best, but he was handsome none the less. She also really couldn't judge given that she had decided to drop an unannounced date night on him any way!

She was sure she had an ancestor too who may have taken part in the Boston Tea Party. It only made some sense to her at least, her family origins had always dated back to the United States for as far as she could tell, and more so that her family had been born and raised in New York, just like she and Queenie. Maybe one day she could look it up, but at the moment the history of her ancestors hadn't been as important to her as it should likely be. It was all a blind guess, so much so that she may have never even had family step foot out of New York, much less care to go into Boston!

While he was still in his case, Tina couldn't help but let the smirk find her lips as she leaned back slightly and crossed her leg just over her other shin. It was peaceful, a few moments at least to watch as the sky lit up with multiple fireworks all at once. It was likely the finale, which had been disappointing that she hadn't been able to keep Newt there long enough to at least see it. Soon, the fireworks lessened, likely at that point those that did go off were being sent by armatures.

But with that, many of those who had also gathered in the park had began to pack up their belongings. Some had been kind enough to wave to the girl who happily just sat there under the stars while other's had just gone on their way. Really Tina barely bothered to take notice to them, they weren't who she was there for after all.

When the lid of the case did pop open again, Tina moved closer to see if there was anything she should be helping with. As usual, it was him making the unofficial date better as she barely had anything to offer to it other than managing to make him up set at her, her crying, and him being on the verge of it too! What a damn mess that was. Thank goodness he was able to put up with her, that much Porpentina couldn't ever forget.

She took her water which she hadn't wasted a minute in taking a sip from before setting it down at her opposite side when she scooted over to sit a little closer to him. " You missed the finale, but every now and then someone sets off some smaller ones. " It must have been a group of people fooling around, but at least they were far enough that their antics didn't really have to effect them other than giving them something to look at.

She hadn't been terribly hungry, but then with the food there she had just decided to go for it when she had taken a sandwich and started taking nibbles of it while she waited to see if any other fireworks may have followed. So far though, it hadn't seemed like it may have been the case. Maybe next time, although she hoped that maybe next time would have been in New York, at least if Newt were around then she could show him how they do a fireworks show.

His question hadn't been ignored, rather once she finished with her bite she had smiled when she could look back on those far easier times in her life. " Every year. We would go to Central Park where we could see them. When I was nine, that was when my Grandparent's started bringing us instead." That only went on until she was about eight, and then they had died. That, being one of the only things he may have known about them. Queenie had never been shy in saying how young she and Tina were when their parents passed on, and in a way, neither had Tina. It was sad, sure. But it hadn't pained her to bring it up as much now, maybe she was used to it? Or just that she had to grab life by the horns so to speak so much so that she was just a little more grown up than she had to be.

She looked to him with a smile and a gentle shrug of her shoulders. " You can ask me anything, it won't upset me. " Although, while she had put herself out there, she really wasn't finished with him yet either. " Also, Newt. I really should say it. I'm sorry I brought you out here like this, I shouldn't have tried to put you on the spot like that. I was just, I was just being silly. " Stupid was a greater term for it. But whatever the case, she had to at least let him know that it was on her, all of it. Had she not wanted to mention Leta's name, she'd have even sworn that she wouldn't mention it again.

" I can't thank you enough for still staying here with me. " While it wasn't much, she did lean against his side a little so that she could give him a quick peck on his cheek. Even better, she hadn't at all forgotten about the compliments about her being beautiful. Not that she really could agree, not that she considered herself hideous either! She just saw herself as normal, not too beautiful and not ugly either. Queenie was prettier, that was how it had always been. Although, hearing different from him towards her looks hadn't hurt at all. It at least put a little extra spring in her step.
