To be honest, he should have known beforehand that he would need mortal money, but he assumed that thought had not assaulted him in the first place because it wasn't like him to use money for... nothing. He kept a little mortal money for when he needed to buy Happy Meals (to summon the dead, obviously), but that was where his profits ran out. He had spent 4 years jumping from place to place, and normally he used to eat in the Underworld, so he had never really needed mortal money for any need you could buy with it. Now, however, he couldn't buy anything with the drachmas on him, and he couldn't go to the Underworld as he had wanted to do from the very beginning.
<p>
And speaking of the Underworld, he had realised that some souls, souls who did not belong to the human world, were freely wandering around Storybrooke, were alive. And oh, that wasn't right at all. The dead were returning from death, the inhabitants of the Underworld were disappearing. Oh, his father wouldn't be happy with those news, and he wasn't either. While he could perfectly understand the joy of seeing someone you believed to be dead, the dead must remain dead. There was an important balance between life and death, something that should not be broken, and instead it had just been broken, again.
<p>
He wondered if when all that was resolved, when the Horned King was defeated, the dead would return to where they should be. After all, people should not return from death, so he could only expect everything to return to normal when all that was over. Some may think it's cruel, hoping that people who have apparently obtained a second chance to live to die again, but he couldn't help it. The order of the universe could not be corrupted, just like that, you had to put aside your feelings and accept that this is not how the world worked. The dead and the living should not be in the same world, and he was sure that many people would not even be able to look at it from that perspective, but he could.
<p>
Maybe it was because of his affinity with death and life, maybe it was for a totally different cause... it didn't matter, as long as it all came back to order when that madness was over. The boy took a deep breath, standing at the door of the store he had heard of. Some had warned him not to enter, others had told him that it was the only place where they could exchange some of his drachmas for mortal money... apparently, not everyone loved that little shop. They were all good reasons to invite him in.
<p>
With a sigh, he opened the door, and when he found himself inside, he closed it gently. Nico looked around uncomfortably, arcing his eyebrows at such strange objects. Strange hobby, collecting things so... well, peculiar, to say the least. He looked up at the front, where there was a brown-haired man, who frankly... didn't look so good. The demigod could sense that he had been dangerously close to death... oh yes, the aura around him betrayed him. Aura that only he and Hades could see, but still. "Hi" he greeted, at the same time that he put his hand in one of his pockets, taking out a few drachmas. "I was wondering if you could... trade me some drachmas for mortal money? I was told to come here".

The world had finally decided to smile down at him, bringing someone he knew back from home. And it was true, his father was also in that city, a father who had deigned to come to his prayers only once in the entire month that he had been in Storybrooke, and Athena, the goddess with whom he had not yet met, also resided in that city, but it was not that they would have had the opportunity to chat, since they had not even spoken as... never in their past. The gods had decided to bring Will, and that small detail was enough to draw a smile on his pale face. He didn't feel happy or comfortable being confined to that city, but at least to be confined with a friend resting beside you was... bearable.
<p>
The boy was now walking through the park, contrary to his usual routine of keeping himself away from places that risked being crowded. Fortunately, the park didn't feel very popular that day, as silence invaded it and most of the benches were alone and perhaps in need of some company. The demigod could understand them if that was the case, even though he was not asking for such company at that moment. He enjoyed the times when he could be alone, so that walk in the park was a delight.
<p>
And okay, maybe he wasn't practically alone either, if we counted the ghost that was following him just a few feet behind him, stopping middle-track every two by three to smell the flowers he supposed he actually couldn't get to smell, and to talk to the few people who had decided to visit the park, even though they couldn't hear him. A pretty happy ghost, considering he was dead. Being dead had not taken away his will to live, ironically.
<p>
Although the boy did stop when he saw a blond woman sitting alone on a bench, staring at nothing, or so it seemed. The other people who he had seen sitting on benches were accompanied, perhaps to take advantage of that quiet and relaxing evening, but that woman was alone... perhaps she wanted company, and the son of Hades would happily provide it. So the boy approached the woman slowly, whispering an audible "Hey" when he was close enough, but without taking a seat. It would be rude to sit without permission.

Being trapped in a city that chillingly resembled the Underworld was not something that he was enjoying at the moment. First a strange portal had swallowed him without even asking permission, it had appeared out of nowhere, and it should have been summoned by some dangerous magic user because when he had been absorbed by it, he had been in the Underworld, just having finished capturing some of those rougue spirits. What kind of God, creature could create a spell so powerful that it could even reach the Underworld itself? The boy had no idea, and not knowing... frustrated him. He deserved to know, after all, he had been dragged there against his will.
<p>
Secondly, his beloved father had decided to ignore him for days (recently he had deigned to show, thanks to the gods of Olympus), regardless of how much the demigod would pray, asking for an explanation, any kind of sign, a warning, some help... anything would have helped him. On the contrary, Hades had decided to keep quiet and keep his child on the margin, and what the God had achieved with all that had been to enrage his son. Look, Nico wasn’t asking for a conversation with his father every Friday while they sipped tea, all what he had requested had been an answer, and it had taken Hades weeks to deliver it.
<p>
Third, the wicked witch. The witch who surely would ruin his life, again. Apparently, she was Hades’ new girlfriend, and I repeat, Nico did not request to have a relationship based on trust with his father, but... it’s not like he was incredibly pleased with the small ‘new girlfriend’ issue that his dad had not even bothered to report, or even make his son’s existence public. Oh yes, Zelena didn't know who he was, so of course she had not believed him when he had confessed that he was the son of her boyfriend. So hiding secrets in the relationship... that would unleash hell, and that little detail was enough to calm him down.
<p>
The boy sighed. He sat against a robust and high tree, a tree that was dying, in the cemetery. Ironically, a half-dead tree located in a graveyard. At his side, a few french fries inside a plastic bag rested. He hadn’t eaten anything since he’d arrived there, so he thought that the logical thing would be to buy at least some simple fries in Granny's, to satisfy his appetite, but he neither had a huge one. Since the bronze jar... he hadn’t been eating much. And yes, he could almost hear Will’s voice in the back of his mind, scolding him and telling him that he should eat more, because it was healthy, but Will wasn't there, no one was. He was completely alone. Tsk. He should be used to it.
<p>
Okay, let’s continue enumerating all the horrible things in that city.
<p>
Fourth. The strange man who owned a bookshop where he accidentally used to spend most of his evenings. The ghosts liked the smell of those peculiar streets, so Nico decided to simply not to discuss and follow their game, because it is not that it mattered much to him either way, those streets hardly were crowded with people in a hurry, which was appreciated. Anyway, this man had seen him huffed and he had decided to do something to improve his mood. And the worst of thing was, that it had worked.
<p>
And fifth... as he had already stated above, he was alone. Loneliness was his friend, he had accustomed to it after so many years living by himself, but now... those last few weeks he had not been alone. Before the end of the summer, he had been with Percy (who at least didn’t behave uncomfortably after Nico having confessed his small infatuation on him, although he seemed to be offended for having said that he was not his type) and Annabeth.
<p>
He had also been briefly with Reyna, and he had spent a few days with Jason and Hazel, until they left for L.A. Jason, incredibly, had turned out to be a… friend, and if he should be honest it had been unexpected. But after... the problem with Eros, both had become friends, and... Nico quite liked how it felt. He also enjoyed spending time with Hazel, talking about any nonsense... having a little sister was one of the few good things that had happened to him, and he appreciated it madly.
<p>
And then was... Will. Will Solace, the most irritating boy who he had ever known. Seriously, his peculiar phrase ‘doctor’s orders’ had come to become one of the most hated ones by Nico, but also one of the most beloved. Having someone who genuinely cared about him was something that he truly appreciated, although again, it also overwhelmed and annoyed him. After all, he could take care of himself alone, even when some did not seem to be able to see it.
<p>
Another sigh.
<p>
Nico missed Will. He missed his stupid phrase, he missed his stupid permanent smile on his face, he missed his blond soft hair, he missed those stupid blue eyes and his damn positive attitude... so positive that some would think that they could tell him any horrible thing and he would be able turn it into something good.
<p>
He really missed him.
<p>
But maybe this way… maybe it was better like this. Perhaps now that he was far from Will, he saw that Nico was simply not good for him, and would look for someone better. Nico would end up consuming his light, and Will would end up getting tired of him, such as Bianca had done, and he would leave him... that was what his mind was screamed at him, but his heart on the other hand, was singing a different song, cheering that Will wouldn’t abandon him...
<p>
Who was right, he wasn't sure...
<p>
Introducing a hand in the white bag at his side, he grabbed a fry and nibbled it slowly, his eyes fixed in a tombstone a few meters from him. He could not see what was engraved in the stone with clarity, courtesy of the night, but... at least he could know deduce that the name began with a ‘N’. The tranquillity was interrupted when he heard a noise in the bushes, prompting the boy to rise uneasy, quickly wielding and drawing his black sword.
<p>
Although he was soon able to see a figure in the distance, a figure that was slowly approaching, a figure which resembled… "Will?" he would normally call him Solace, but when they were intimate moments, or they were all by themselves, he always chose Will. But let us be honest, he traded between Will and Solace all the time. But could it be him? could it be the son of Apollo?.

<div class="tframe"><div class="tbody"><div class="threadtext">

Christmas wasn't something the boy used to celebrate. In Italy, when he had been little, he had blurred memories of a huge pine tree and bright smiles decorating the faces of two women. He remembered... gifts under the immense pine tree, but normally that's where those memories ended, memories that if he had to be sincere gave him a feeling of peace, tranquility, warmth... although also pain and nostalgia and melancholy and agony. Christmas... He hadn't celebrated them in four years, without even thinking about those supposedly happy holidays. Let's just say he had been too busy running to save his life, hiding and planning some sort of plan to save the world. Yes, Christmas had not had an important place on his list of chores...
<p>
Now, however, everything had changed. That last year he had decided for the first time to stay in Camp Half-Blood for some time, something that could become permanent, and of course, that first year also brought with it his first Christmas. He had been... well, not enthusiastic or excited about the idea, but he didn't really hate it either. After all, that year he had friends with whom he could celebrate Christmas, and he also had Will... his first Christmas as a couple, he remembered hearing or saying, he wasn't sure. So... corny. And yet, something inside him, some skeletal butterflies wallowed at the thought of it.
<p>
Now, of course, those butterflies were gone. His first Christmas with his friends and Will had been discarded, like all the others. And all because of him, all because he had been in the wrong place at the wrong time. He shouldn't be surprised, really, and within his being he wasn't really surprised, maybe he even expected something like this to happen... that his first Christmas would be destroyed, he couldn't have expected any less. He would spend them alone, with the dead, listening from afar to the loud laughter of friends, family and couples, he would feel their happiness radiate in the air, that which never seemed to last around him.
<p>
Although not everything was as horrible as he made it look. He’d met people in Storybrooke who weren't... well, unsatisfactory. At first he had met Grace, then Luna, then Lucy... He would even swear to have seen people he recognized from the Underworld, something that had certainly not caused him much excitement. Dead people should be left dead, that's how order worked on Earth. Life and death were necessary, they were a balance... and if the dead began to return, well, that would not end well. Besides, he bet everything that Hades would be furious to see that his kingdom was slowly running out of inhabitants....
<p>
He shook his head, concentrating on his previous thought. Acceptable... people. Yes, now, in fact, he was on his way to meet one of them. Lucy, a girl who had confused him with her brother, and who was annoyingly... friendly, it was as if she wanted to be his friend. And having someone like that, wanting... to be more than just a mere acquaintance, seemed strange to him, a feeling with which he was not at all familiar. And at the same time he was... happy. For that very reason, the son of Hades had decided to reward her. Christmas was also about giving sentimental gifts or something similar to the people you care about most, and while Nico hadn't made inseparable friends there either, that girl... well, I don't know, her spirit was of his liking. She was happy and cheerful, and… well, it was nice to see someone like that.
<p>
So there he was, walking through the woods. He had searched elsewhere, except for the graveyard because he doubted she’d be there. Normally the only one who spent most of his days there was him, and hey, he had an excuse. It made him feel closer to home. Besides, that's where most dead people gathered. They gave him conversation, even when he didn't want it. Finally, he found the girl a few yards ahead of him, in front of a huge tree. "Hey," he said, approaching her, fiddling with the gift he was carrying hidden in his pocket. "I've been looking all over for you," yep, he’d looked in all the places which weren’t crowed, obviously.

He hated everyone.
<p>
He hated Percy Jackson, he hated Camp Half-Blood, he hated his father, he hated the gods and demigods, he hated the hunter that had convinced his sister to join their sisterhood, he hated the stupid centaur, he hated the darkness, the shadows... and he hated himself. He hated himself for being weak, for not being able to save his sister, for trusting someone just because they had saved their life. He... he had put the life of his sister at the hands of a hero, thinking it would be completely impossible for Bianca to get wound, not even with a scratch. Percy was invincible, he was brave and he wasn't afraid of anything, he could overcome any obstacle that made itself present, and he would win against any evil which lodged in his way. Percy could protect her. Percy could keep her safe from the clutches of monsters.
<p>
Oh, he was wrong. Oh, he had been naive. Oh, he had been guided by his feelings.
<p>
He hated Percy Jackson, he hated the hero he had admired, he hated the hero who had saved their life at first... but for what? If then he wouldn't even bother to save his sister. He could have let them die, he could have them rot. Since after all, Bianca already lay dead, and all Nico wanted right now was to die, he wanted to accompany her in death, plunge into an eternal sleep and never wake up. He wanted to not feel a thing, he wanted to forget. The pain was too much, it was unbearable. His heart shrank, his eyes burned, due to all the tears that he had poured out... I swear that he should have stayed dry, but tears kept coming, followed by wetting his pale cheeks, still reminding him that she wouldn't return.
<p>
She wouldn't return holding a handkerchief, she would not return to dry his tears. He was alone and disconsolate. He was alone and frightened. He was alone and needy. Nico needed his sister. He needed her warm, he needed her love, he needed her kisses, he needed her sweet words, those that always made everything better... he deeply needed his sister, but he couldn't have her back, because she had slipped away, and the dead, should stay dead. He felt so empty and inconsolable. He felt like an empty shell... without her, what was the point of living? Without her nothing made sense, without her nothing would ever be the same, without her his world would come down, he was sure of it.
<p>
But Minos wasn't consistent. The ghost that he had found after escaping from Camp Half-Blood had taught him the art of revenge, and Nico planned to use it. He planned to retaliate against Percy Jackson and his friends, he planned to make them suffer as they had made him suffer. They would pay... even though Minos, who claimed to be the Ghost King, still wouldn't let him act, saying that it was too soon. Nonsense, his words and the idea of ghosts. The idea to talk with them. The idea of being the only one who could see them. Nico knew beforehand that he and his sister were children of some God, but all the time that he had been in the Camp nobody had claimed him. Now... now he didn't need explanations, because he knew very well who was his divine father.
<p>
Hades, the God of Death.
<p>
The voices had told him. The voices that began to whisper in his ears after escaping, the voices who refused to leave him alone. They were trying to convince him to join them, they whispered him threatening things and Nico... he couldn't come to understand it, he couldn't come to understand where the voices came from, who owned them. Perhaps he was going crazy, maybe the loss had been too hard to support it. But Minos believed different. He had told him that they were spirits, spirits who wished for his alive soul to join them.
<p>
The boy still didn't know what powers did he possessed, but whichever they were, they were were out of control. The grass to his around always ended up withering, the shadows seemed to cover him like a blanket, as if they wanted to protect him... the earth trembled, threatening to reopen a crack. He was scared of what he could do, he was scared of what could happen... Although all uncertainty disappeared when he heard the news. Zoë Nightshade had died. He had felt it, he always felt it when someone left the world of the living, and believe me, it wasn't a nice feeling, but she, the girl who had claimed his sister... She was dead. She was in the underworld. She was within his reach. As soon as he found out how to get to the Underworld. Minos had told him that he could travel between the shadows, shadow-travel, and Nico had thought that was utterly impossible. But being the son of a God also could have seemed impossible before.
<p>
After several failed attempts that ended up in the wrong places and in several faintings, he managed to master his skill, at least a little, and was able to travel to the Underworld, where surprisingly he didn't pass out. He was tired, and that place... it was cold and inhospitable. But what could have been expected of the Underworld? Minos had indeed decided to accompany him on the trip, and Nico was grateful for it. He was the first person after Bianca who seemed to want to help him. Seemed.
<p>
He was what felt like hours strolling around the place, feeling the eyes of the ghosts sticking in his back, many of them even starting to follow his person, perhaps guided by his aura, his kinship, or the smell of death that he exuded. The son of Hades wasn't worried if he had people following him, as the only thing that he cared about was getting to the girl who had been the cause of everything. And he did, he arrived, he found her. She was the same girl who he had seen after having been saved from a monster. The same girl. The same culprit. Nico felt the anger burn inside, it wanted to leave, he wanted to make her pay for what she had done... but he couldn't, she was dead, he couldn't do anything, although his heart wanted so. The boy was silent for a few seconds, his fists tightened, his teeth and jaw clenched, his eyes wild-eyed... his white cheeks still stained by the tears that had recently been shed. He wanted to die. "You...".
