Christmas... a time of consumption where people spent money with the excuse that they were gifts for their loved ones. Arista didn't hate Christmas, the truth is that she felt really indifferent when it came to it, but... I don't know, it didn't drive her crazy either. She had seen houses that were decorated from head to toe with millions of coloured lights, and come on, so many coloured lights could provoke epilepsy or something like that. And it seemed right and nice to see so many people seem so interested and determined to make those parties the best of their lives, but... it was just a party, nothing more.
<p>
A party where supposedly a man in a sleigh pulled by flying reindeer slid through your chimney and left you gifts under a tree. Okay, now the question that surely millions of children on the planet would have wondered... what if you didn't have a fireplace? did he force the lock on your door? did he throw rocks at your parents' windows to let him in? It doesn't matter from what point of view you tried to look at it because it didn't make any sense. Besides, she was sure that what that man was doing was invading your privacy, now that was illegal.
<p>
Still, Christmas had something good, the presents. At first, Arista had thought of buying something for herself, leaving her sisters aside, but even if she hadn't officially made peace with them yet, she couldn't leave them without any kind of gift either. That would be too cruel, even for her. So yes, she had bought several gifts for Ariel, her adventurous little sister who always refused to follow the rules. Now, something totally random and out of the question, but the mermaid would love to meet Eric, the mysterious Prince Charming... She shook her head, and arriving at the docks, fortunately she was able to locate the redheaded head that she had been looking for. "Hey, thinking about taking a dip? The water must be frozen... although it's not like we're sensitive to the temperature either" they could sense if it was hot or cold, but humans probably couldn't stand too much submerged in frozen water, but they on the other hand, yes.

It was... it was so unreal. Losing someone, losing someone who had always been at your side, losing the person that had taken care of you since your birth, the person who had promised to protect you until the end of the days. Her mother had reneged on that pledge. Atlantica had lost its light, it had lost its force, its spark... everyone was sad, they all carried long faces wherever they went, and smiles were scarce, even though Arista could not blame them.
<p>
Queen Athena had perished, and everyone in the Kingdom had been discouraged in seconds, deflated as if they were an old and punctured balloon. It looked like all happiness, all laughter had been erased from the seas, and the young daughter of Triton did not agree. She of course had mourned her mother, she had mourned her mother along her sisters and her father, she had mourned with the Kingdom, but that did not mean that hopelessness would have to dominate them, right?
<p>
Arista wanted to hear the laughter of her sisters, she wanted to witness their bright smiles, or the ones of her father. Oh, her father seemed... that all happiness had left his body, and now it looked like the scattered black ashes where his heart full of hope had been before were the only thing which remained. Now there was no nothing. He didn't smile, he didn't laugh, he was no longer the same. He was not that soul who played with them every day, he was no longer who he once had been.
<p>
But, how would he be? He had lost his wife, the woman who had filled his days with love and words full of affection and tenderness, and now everything had been snatched from him. As if the universe was punishing him for something he had done. And Arista and all her sisters had tried to encourage him, they had tried to make him laugh, but nothing had worked. It seemed that he had lost all life.
<p>
Now the young mermaid was looking through the 'window' of the room she shared with all her sisters, wondering where they were. Only Ariel and herself were there. Perhaps they were trying to cheer Triton up... again. Arista frowned and turned to look at her red-headed sister, a small smile on her face. "Hey, I was thinking.. you know, what about if we take a swim around the Castle? to escape from here. I don't think I'm gonna be able to stand more merpeople giving us their condolences, even if they mean well".

At first, it had seemed a good idea, a great idea, travel through different realms, with the sole purpose of finding some trace of her sisters, and she still thought it was a good idea... but please, she would have thought it twice if she knew that mermaids belonging to different kingdoms could be so rude. Arista had tried to be friendly with them, asking if they had seen two redheads mermaids, but they had only laughed. Is that perhaps fish shouldn't help each other? Apparently here in Neverland, things were completely different, and she could not help feeling frustrated.
<p>
The island, thought, was utterly beautiful to her. It was wide and with a vast forests, and she had also heard that some children resided there inside. She wondered how could they have come to find an island that seemed to be out of anyone's reach... I don't know, but something told her that reaching Neverland was only possible if you were able to navigate between realms (something that by what she knew were only mermaids able to do), or if you had some object which allowed you to jump between realms, as for example some magic beans. Perhaps these children had used beans... or perhaps these rude mermaids had kidnapped them.
<p>
Arista shook her head, discarding that possibility. Mermaids didn't abduct children, not even the evil ones. The evil mermaids used to have fun drowning sailors and sinking ships, but they didn't kidnap children just for the sake of it, after all, where would the utility be? Uhm, then she only had a possible answer left, those children had decided to travel there voluntarily, perhaps with one of the aforementioned beans, or perhaps it had been a kind of hex... did they want to go home? did they miss their family, if they had one at all? The thought shrunk her heart. She understood how did it feel like to lose your family, and to be away from them...
<p>
With a last gaze to the mermaids that were still laughing, Arista dived into the ocean and swam towards one end of the island (similar to a quiet and rocky shore), where a large imposing rock loomed. The mermaid returned to the surface, and was surprised to find a boy there, just a few meters away from her. With impetus, the young woman was able to sit on said rock, and she looked at the young child, wondering if he ever would have seen a mermaid... "Hi there, kiddo. Are you lost?" she asked, looking around. There were no more children around. Odd. "Are you playing hide and seek, you and the other kids? or have you decided to take a break away from them? Believe me, I would understand if it were so..." she laughed listlessly, shaking her head. "My name's Arista, what's yours?".

Family. Something that Arista had always loved with all her heart. After all, family is all that she had had at her side during half of her life. Her sisters and her father, those people who she had loved a lot. She still loved them, if she had to be completely sincere, but she didn't want to see them.
Ari had already met with Ariel at Storybrooke, and she knew that Aquata was also in the surrounding area, and she simply did not want to find them after all that had happened. Of course, Ariel and Aquata did not know the discussion that Arista had with her sisters before running away from Atlantic, but the discussion had been because of those two. If her two sisters had not escaped from their home in the first place, all that would not have occurred.
<p>
Triton would have not become even more possessive. All the sisters were aware that Triton could become quite controlling, overprotective... but since Ariel and Aquata had left the burrow, his way of acting with his daughters had changed terribly, and Arista simply hand't been able to stand it anymore. She couldn't live as a slave, and she just couldn't stand living with her sisters and her father. She wanted to start a new life, she wanted to discover the world, she wanted to do the same thing Ariel had done, even if that involved disobeying her father's wishes.
<p>
Arista sighed, looking at the water that was so close to her feet. The mermaid was sitting on the docks, with her stare lost, while her brown hair danced with the soft evening breeze. She used to miss her blonde hair, but she had dyed it with the sole purpose of her sisters not recognising it, although apparently Ariel had recognised her perfectly, no matter the color of her hair. Frustrating, I would say.
<p>
Her thoughts were interrupted when she heard steps approaching. Oh, fantastic. Over everything, now she would have someone disturbing the peace that she had been relaxing with these last few minutes.

Arista wasn't someone who you saw and thought "wow, she must be a kind of person crazed with books". Oh, no. And if you thought that those people didn't exist, you were very wrong. If you see someone with round glasses, a t-shirt of braces with clear words that spell out "I love to read", and a book in their arms, being held up tight as if were their baby, believe me, that person must fit perfectly the description of crazy for books. Anyhow, if she was not someone who was not even interested in the books, why was she there? A very good question, a question that not even herself was able to respond. Ari was bored, her heart needed some action, fun, something with which to entertain herself.
<p>
She was wandering through corridors, surrounded by the shelves that were full of books. Wow, perhaps there was someone that had read all those books? Because if indeed that person existed, she or he must have an extraordinary knowledge. Wait, why was she surprised by the knowledge of another person when she was also owner of a vast knowledge? I mean, maybe not as vast as someone would think, but still! she had learned a lot about the human world with those little trips she had taken, as well as she had learned more about other worlds- as Wonderland, Neverland... and yeah, maybe she wasn't a walking encyclopaedia, but she knew some things.
<p>
Ari sighed, why did she even care? guess it was one of her many, many quirks. Wait, was that even the right definition for quirks? Ugh, did it even matter?. Wait, how could be caring be a quirk? whatever. Arista slightly smiled to herself, her fingers touching new or wear out covers of each book carefully, placed with love. She supposed that to work in a place like that, a library, you had to be someone who was madly in love with those worn sheets of paper, filled with black ink, black strokes that most of times had a story...
<p>
She sighed heavily, biting her lower lip, drawing from one of the shelves a book that talked about animals. Domestic or wild, mammals or amphibians... All in one book, its details remain hidden in some pages. Arista returned to smile, now by opening the book, browsing between its pages, her eyebrows rising. "No pictures?" she asked, to the air, apparently. "An animal book, and there are no adorable images to accompany these boring words?" it was outrageous, right?. "Elephants are extremely intelligent animals, with a brain that weighs 5 kg. They can understand more things than any animal, except for the whales. It is even demonstrated that they understand some words and follow simple instructions if they are taught correctly... Fine, amazing! But where is the picture of the brain? Some of us want to see it!".
