Yet another day in the wondrous wonderful realm of Wonderland! How incredibly lucky he was. As clearly, the last hat he had made hadn’t worked. AGAIN. It was pure torture to be stuck here like this, he wasn’t even entirely sure how long he had been trapped in this realm now. All he knew was that it had been way too long. He couldn’t really tell if this was all a dream, because surely this sort of nightmare couldn’t possibly be real. Because if it was real, then it meant that what he had done was also real. And how could he live with himself for doing that to her? His own daughter. How DARE he. How could someone call themselves a father and yet abandon their own child.

Because guess what? That’s exactly what he did.

Although perhaps it hadn’t been entirely his own fault, he had been tricked after all. But still, he shouldn’t have allowed that to happen and now he had broken a promise. The most important promise in all the world. Taking care of Grace. And now she would be an orphan. And would continue to be one for who knows how long. Forever? He’d completely lost track of the time being here, the only concept of time he had was by how many hats he had now made….and they sort of filled the room now.

Jefferson finally groaned where he lay, face planted on a pile of material on his desk. What a great thing it is to wake up in the morning, only to find that you must have completely passed out in your own workshop. He blinked sleepily as the clutter of objects on his desk gradually came into focus, and it truly was a mess. Probably a miracle that his entire face wasn’t a complete pin cushion by the amount of needles that were skewed about sticking out of odd bits of fabric. A half made hat lay limp to one side with a pair of scissors impaling it, likely his own fault for that. He did have a habit of stabbing hats that disagreed with him after all.

“Ugh” he raised a heavy arm in defeat before letting it fall back onto the table with a loud thud so that the sound echoed around his room. The noise quite successfully making him jump hopefully into awakeness. His face shot up from the table, a piece of ribbon stayed stuck to his forehead from sweat. “Get it to work” he mumbled in greeting to himself, as hello me, yes, another day to fix this mess he was in. So he had to get it to work. And by that, he meant the hat of course. Making a portal couldn’t be impossible, but it was sure damn hard. He simply had to figure out what he was doing wrong here, because he definitely wasn’t doing something right. Clearly. Or he’d be home by now. He just couldn’t think of what. Or rather, there were too many ideas to figure out which. And so he began. Again. Running his hand shakily through his hair, he took in a deep breath before picking up a sewing needle, closing one eye as he began threading it.

Mousey had not had one of the best lives in Wonderland. Having had to steal to survive, having abandoned her own family... She had simply not lived among riches. Although nor is it that those little facts had ever bothered her, since she liked her life there! Well, perhaps like was too strong of a word, let's say that she could endure her life there. At least she could steal calmly, since no one ever suspected of a small dormouse that was coincidentally following them. And taking advantage of nobody ever suspecting of her, stealing always was extremely easy. Sometimes that bothered her, the simplicity with which she could for example slip into giant heavy bags that women used to wear over their shoulders, because she wanted a little more, something that could entertain her, amuse her, something like a challenge!.

Although now she hadn't been stealing anything from anyone, given that she was living with Jefferson, the man who she had found while being held prisoner by Hare, in that infernal tea party. It felt weird, you know? Live without committing any criminal act of which she would surely not regret, live like a civilized rodent. Civilized rodent... Ew. Mousey awoke suddenly, because of a noise that had resounded around the room, bouncing off the walls, and returning to her large and round ears. She rubbed her eyes, and with her body still kind of asleep, she looked out of the hat that she had been sleeping in. Every night she elected one of the millions of hats that filled the room, although she had some that she considered her favorite ones. Which were those who had already taken her form, and then to lie down it was as if she fitted into a mold perfectly made for her! She loved it, everything had to be said.

Her view focusing, she could see that the man was already awake, and that as she had expected he had been the one who had caused that awful noise that had awakened her. Dormouse rubbed her eyes one last time, and with a small yawn, she came out of the hat, tapering. Someone could think that being there, doing nothing special, seeing how a man tries to create a magic hat and fail one time after another was boring, but it really wasn't. Though seeing that scene day after day was sad, pathetic! He was obsessed. And so, she knew that she neither could blame him entirely, because he had his daughter waiting, and she knew that he needed that magic hat to travel to that other world. For the moment nothing had paid off, and although Dormouse felt bad, she couldn't do anything! Sometimes she had helped him with the creation of hats, but as you might expect a small rodent helping him did not make any difference, because the result would be the same. A normal hat that did not possess any magical quality, unless you consider magic how a hat can make you look, then yes.

Mousey walked to where he was, obviously walking on top of the table, avoiding needles which decorated the desk, although that did not prevent her from grabbing one. Because yes, she wore her small pin attached to her belt, which surrounded her small waist, but that did not mean that she could not seize a small needle, right?. "You've been repeating those same words every single day! Get it to work! Get it to work!" She tried to do her best impression of him, laughing after her imitation. She was right, Hatter did not stop repeating those same words, all the time! As if to remind himself of one of the greatest truisms.

She sighed to see how he prepared to create another hat, rather than as we see he had been doing that a lot these last... Nope, he had been doing it since he had returned to Wonderland. Every hour, every minute, every second... Creating hats! It was sick. Though what wasn't sick in Wonderland?. Mouse stayed quiet for a few seconds, playing with the needle that she had managed to grab before getting bored and throwing the needle through the air. There was no one around, so she didn't exactly have to worry about who she had hit, right?. Running on her 4 legs, she climbed Jefferson's right arms, staying stop on his shoulder, in order to have a better view of the needle. "Careful, careful... Careful!" The last one was cried into his ear, although you could at least be thankful that a small dormouse could not yell as much as for example a lion. Wait, lions roared not screamed... Whatever. After that, she laughed loudly, sitting on his shoulder.

I can't promise to fix all your problems

But I promise you won't face them alone

Chesh sat invisible in the corner, watching as the two worked out (yet another) hat to add to their collection. They were all wonderful (pun indended) hats, but lacked the basic necessity of what Hatta really needed. His ticket back home. He needed to get back to his daughter, Grace. An endeavor that Chesh was often trying to help him with-- of vourse, being a cat these days didnt make it easy compared to the more human hands, but her magic did most of her work anyways. Everyday she stopped by Hatter's to make eure that Jefferson had what he needed to work, and helped where he needed. Every. Single. Day.

It was obvious she loved him dearly, as well as his nervous little dormouse, but never quite on the same way. She appeared with a smile, the fluffy cat trotting through the air with her magic and laying down midair as she watched Jefferson and Dormouse, tilting her head curiously as she tried to figure out how this hat would work any better than the others. It looked the same in structure with maybe a few different patches, but essentially the same look. And the feeling? It felt rushed, if not panicked. As if the maker's life depended on these very hats. Maybe it did, to him. She wouldnt know, given she never had children.

Frankly, she had no idea if she even could have children. Not that she had much of an opportunity to find out, given she stayed a cat these days to hide who-- or moreso what she really was. The Chaos Magic had done so much irreversible damage to Wonderland, it was no wonder why the citizens immediately distrusted her when she was contained into a conscious body. Being a cat was for the best. Honestly, only Dormouse and Jefferson knew who she was aside from the obvious title of The Cheshire Cat, and she wanted to keep it that way. Especially given how the bloody big head the Red Queen was about power.

"How's this one different, Hatta?" She asked curiously, wondering why he was pinning away at a hat that felt as useless as the others. Of course, it would look fabulous on anyone, but showmanship wasnt exactly the goal here. The cat snuggled up, rubbing her furry face to his cheek affectionately to Jefferson, before bopping the Dormouse on top of her head with her paw," Morning, Lunch," She chuckled at the mouse. She didnt eat mice.. because, well, that was barbaric. But Dormouse didnt know that, which made it funnier-- at least to Chesh.

This was the hat right? It had to be, he had a good feeling about this one. Well, as good as a feeling he could get about making these boring, unportal jumping hats. And he did try to make each one somewhat different, or at least an improvement on the hat before it. Because surely one of them would work soon, they had to! He was the Hatter after all, so he couldn’t possibly fail. And yet, each attempt he had made so far (which had been far too many to count) was a glorious failure. Every. Single. Time. But he simply could not and would not give up. He had to keep going you see, because every minute he spent not hat making was a wasted minute he could have better spent finding a way back home to his daughter.

And so here he was, sitting amongst the clutter that was his desk…hat making.

He wasn’t alone mind, it seemed that he’d managed to wake up Dormouse, probably as a result of all that racket he’d made from only moments ago. Her voice, although quiet due to her size, managed to reach him as she mimicked his chant. Something which she clearly thought which was quite funny, which he supposed was in all honesty. But this matter of hat making was something he had to take seriously! “Yes quite right Mousey, I have to get it to work!” he replied unhelpfully, leaving the mouse be. Hoping that she wouldn’t lose too many needles and pins he might need today. Not that he knew exactly what he would need for this particular hat as of yet, he was still working that out. As things weren’t really quite as organised anymore with him, both mentally and with his work. The only thing that drove him these days was the thought of Grace, and so he kept going, making hat after hat after hat.

Soon, tiny paws ran up his right arm to sit on his shoulder as she had done only many times before. Not exactly helpful in aiding his concentration, and he frowned trying to ignore his friends words as he stuck his tongue out of the corner of his mouth. Slowly pushing the thread through the eye of the needle, that is…until Dormouse literally screamed the last ‘careful’ right into his ear causing him to jump slightly. Completely missing the thread and jabbing the side of his hand with the needle, resulting in a pained yelp escaping him, quickly dropping the tiny weapon back onto his desk. Proceeding to move his hand into his mouth to numb the pain slightly, and also out of his own frustration.

“Careful? Careful!? What great advice” he muttered grumpily, glancing at the mouse and rolling his eyes as she laughed at him. The corner of his mouth twitching to form a small smile of his own, as he couldn’t ever stay annoyed at her for long. She was his friend after all, and he knew that she was only trying to raise his spirits a little. Cheshire Cat’s soft fur then brushing against his cheek tickled, a small giggle escaping him which promptly turned into a slight cough as he breathed in all the fluff. “Different different different…hmmm…” he smushed the side of his hat inwards, scratching the back of his head as he thought for a moment, “A flower” he finally decided, “It shall have a great big flower growing from the top” he grinned widely in answer to Chesh's question before retrieving his dropped needle again.

tea party trio

The truth was that being there with Hatter, wasn't something boring or irritating for her, because his company was really grateful. The company that used not to be to pleasant used to be the one of The Cheshire Cat. And let's see, she could stand her, it was what she had been doing every day, as the cat always came to visit them, to check if Hatter was okay, or at least that was what the small rodent guessed. It is not that she had asked personally. And let's see, her relationship with her wasn't complicated – well, it was. Because that cat wanted her to be her next lunch snack! and believe me, having a friend who wanted to eat you was not something that Mouse had been looking for.

But even if that cat was incredibly irritating when she proposed it, and although she saw her as her meal, she considered her family. Surely she wouldn't say it aloud, because it would destroy her image and reputation of strong dormouse and against sentimentality, but Jefferson and Chesh were the only family she had, and she would probably be lost without them. Please, she couldn't even imagine what would she be without them, although perhaps she should start to imagine that life. Because Hatter had to return home, with his daughter, he had to return to his roots.

At least if he managed to escape Wonderland, she would stay with Chesh... wait, and what if Hatter was the only one that prevented Chesh from eating her? what would happen if Jefferson finally got back home, and Cheshire devoured her? Dormouse shook her head, she should not think in those remote possibilities which so perfectly could happen. She should focus on the now, yeah, that sounded like a pretty good plan. Mouse sighed, until a small smile invaded her face to hear the irritation of Hatter. Apparently her last word, which had been screamed into his ear had been a great distraction for the man.

Look, he even had managed to jab himself!. "That must've hurt, uh?" her intention was not to cause something like this, but hey, what had been done had been done. Her amusement soon was over when the cat became visible to them, and when she approached without notice to them, or more specifically to Jefferson. Hey, it didn't bother her in the most minimum. As long as the feline stayed far away from her, the better. And clearly that wouldn't happen... To feel as the weight of her paw fell on her small head, Mousey pulled her pin out of her little belt, where it had been stored, pointing it at the cat accusingly. "Touch me again, and you will feel the wrath of my sword!".

It was not a sword, and it was not the first time that the feline touched her, but still.

Mouse then turned her attention to the hat that was being created, listening to Hatter's explanation of how that hat was gonna be different. A flower was going to make a difference. "A flower? Which color? will it have thorns? what kind of flower will it be? any flower less a rose, I don't like roses" you see, roses normally associated to the Queen, so Mouse didn't have real appreciation for those flowers.
