Spending summer vacation home from Harvard was supposed to be a gentle reminder of her California roots – time spent on the beach, and out and about with friends, time spent with her boyfriend Josh, before she would finish her final year as a poli-sci major and then go to work for her father. She had everything set out before her, but as Chloe Armstrong wiggled her toes in the warm sand of Coronado Beach’s shoreline she felt like everything was in complete disarray over what had been previously laid out. Josh was more distant than before, and this trip down to the beach with a group of their mutual friends should have been just what they all needed to regain those “old times” feelings that only a trip to the ocean with friends can bring.

Chloe adjusted the strap of her one piece, checking her skin to make sure she wasn’t burning yet. It was still early in the day, and she had slathered herself in sunscreen beforehand to save her ivory skin from the sun’s rays. It was simple enough, remember to put it back on every couple of hours, sit under the umbrella most of the day, and if she went out into the water, remember to put more on when she dried off. Her eyes flicked out to surfers riding the gentle waves that rushed the beach, seeing them tumble off their boards after getting only a few moments on their feet. The tide was good this morning, but this area was better suited to paddle-boarding and sunbathing than anything.

The tide pools that appeared during low tide were starting to vanish as the sun climbed steadily higher in the sky, and Chloe adjusted her sunglasses before turning back to the conversation happening around her, plans for the day, and drinking around one of the fire-pits later in the evening. Yes, today should have been the perfect type of day, but Chloe couldn’t shake the feeling that something was going to happen that was going to change her, and she wasn’t talking about the feeling that Josh was pulling further and further away from her now that she was back and they were face to face with one another.

Turning her thoughts to their last couple of phone calls before she had flown home, he had seemed warm like always, telling her how much she was missed and how he couldn’t wait for her to get home. He had met her at the airport, along with one of her father’s current aides to return her to her parent’s house. They had stopped along the way for burgers and fries, something they had done a lot when they were both still in high school together. It wasn’t until she had been home nearly a week that he had canceled their first date, and since then, he had canceled more – begging off either with fatigue or something coming up. She couldn’t help but feel like there was something else going on there, but she had no proof yet to confront him with, so she just let it go. No sense in creating a huge scene over something when it truly could be just that, fatigue and stuff.

She chimed in on ideas for lunch, someone would run out to one of the many cafes nearby for something closer to noon, and her vote of Thai food was quickly shot down by the group composed of mainly vain girls and air-headed males who were lobbying for burgers or something more typical for the American teenager. Chloe felt the disappointment rise in her chest. An outing with friends was supposed to have been a fun thing, but she couldn’t help but think back to the friends she had made at Harvard, and how much more adult she had become in a couple of semesters than the friends she was with now. ‘What a waste…’ she found herself thinking as she climbed to her feet, brushing sand off her behind.

Chloe headed for the water, knowing a quick dip would be the best thing to clear her head. Even in the middle of summer the water was cool in the morning, and would get the blood pumping in her veins once more. Hell, it might even make her feel better about being out with everyone if she could shake the feeling of inadequacy in her current company. Wading in, she let the current take her out several yards into the ocean, the water as she predicted cool but not unpleasantly so. She felt better in the water than she had back on the beach, thus lending credit to her original thought that her company for the day was the issue she was feeling. She resolved to push all that aside – today was going to be a fun day, and she’d make it a fun day for her any way she had to.

She tread water once her feet no longer felt sand as she watched families with younger children ride the waves on body boards. She laughed as their antics, missing the days like that with her own mother and father. She turned sideways, waiting for a good wave to ride back in to the shore, the sun caressing her face bringing her a smile finally as she continued to wait for “her” wave.

Ariel had made her way up towards one of the undersea portals again. She didn't know where she was going, but, a fight with her father had made her need to get out of the house. While she was tempted to stop when Flounder and Sebastian talk to her, she didn't. She just needed to get out of Atlantica. The fact that despite the fact that she was getting older, she was still treated like she was a little kid who needed to be protected. And, Ariel didn't want to be seen like that anymore.

Hearing one of her sisters following after her, Ariel turned around, and, explained that she needed a couple of hours away from this place while things cooled down with their father, and, then she would be back. Giving her sister a soft smile, Ariel then continued to swim, and, soon felt herself reach one of the portals, as she swam through it, being transported from Atlantica.

Reaching the surface, Ariel raised her head above the water, and, just looked around for a moment. Ariel didn't know where she was, it was somewhere she hadn't been yet. Or at least she didn't remember being. Ariel looked around for a moment as she watched people running around this beach, and, moving back and forth through the water with some strange looking contraptions.

“Eep.” Ariel said, as she ducked underneath the water for a moment. Ariel didn't know where she was, but, there was only one real way to find out. But, she wanted to keep her body in the water itself for now, while she found out how people in this world felt about mermaids. If they knew about them at all. The last thing she wanted was to be locked up in a cage or something, to be gawked at. Ariel just moved herself further along the water, as she noticed some of these people moving out of the water more.

Ariel looked at the crowd of people, before her eyes fell on one, sitting on one of those strange contraptions, and, just looking around like she was waiting for something. Ariel kept herself a bit of a distance away from the woman, while she waited to see what was going to happen, the last thing she needed was to be hit by one of those contraptions, but, she did find them fascinating to watch the humans from other worlds interact and mingle. Hopefully she would not be in too much trouble being here.

A wave crested, and Chloe jumped, laughing as she let it carry her back to the shore. She loved wave riding, but someone under the umbrella waved to her and she went running back up the shore line, falling back into the sand under the umbrella, soaked, but sated by the water. Lunch plans had been made, and soon someone would be off to grab several pizzas from one of the shops on the board walk. Chloe felt like pizza was a little cliché for their age, but couldn’t deny that it would be good to have the carbs if she planned on getting in the water any more.

She laughed at a casual joke, pulling a towel from her bag as she wrapped it around her shoulders, in a bit of a better mood now that she had re-centered herself in the waves. She pulled her sunglasses back on, wrapping her wet hair into a sloppy bun atop her head and rubber banding it into place. Soon, a friend was pulling her to her feet, a game of volleyball seemed to be on the agenda, and Chloe played simply to keep her mind off how strange the morning had begun.
The volley ball came whizzing by her head, and she was a bit too slow to react, watching helplessly as it blew by her, and a little way down the beach. She ran and retrieved the ball, throwing it back, before she looked back out at the water.
Chloe waved at her friends to continue the game, and waded back into the water.

The game was fun, and the day was still early, but she felt the water calling to her again. Before long, she had floated back out to where her feet no longer touched the bottom, and she leaned back, letting her body float along with each gentle wave, riding them where they took her, only standing when she got back too close to the beach again, swimming back out towards the end of the pier and then back on her back, floating once again.

The sun kept her warm in the water, and with her sunglasses now, she almost felt like she could close her eyes and take a nap, just floating there. She knew that was folly, she’d eventually go under and probably suck down a huge gulp of water at the same time. Too much trouble to be worth the nap, but maybe later, under the umbrella, a nap would be perfect.

Chloe knew she had come back to California to spend time with her friends, but she felt more at peace in the water right now, having missed the warmth and salt that Harvard didn’t offer. She heard jetskis go by, further out on the water, but wasn’t prepared when the first wave from them hit her, dragging her under as she flailed about to right herself. She felt her sunglasses rip from her face as the next wave hit, her eyes stinging as she forced them open to try and orient herself towards shore.

Her lungs were burning as she finally felt bottom, and with a kick, shot herself back to towards the surface, sputtering hard as she finally burst through, gasping lungful after lungful of air down as she tried to cough water up at the same time. She kicked to keep herself above water as she next wave crested over her, knocking her forward before she had time to look around, thankfully, she had enough air this time that when she was drug under this time, she was quickly able to return to the surface and move closer to the shore. When she had sand under her feet, she stopped, checking to see if her sunglasses had gotten tangled in her hair, and cursing under her breath when she found them missing.

Ariel just stayed there with her gaze on the people in the water. She didn't know how many people would be ok with mermaids here, so she didn't want to go near to the people in this place, until someone needed her. The main reason she was here was to observe them, and, get herself something to take back for her collection. But, she didn't have to hurry off too fast.

From what she could tell, no-one had spotted her yet. So for right now, she was safe. And, she just stayed there, with a smile in the direction of some of the people. Noticing some coming towards her, she quickly ducked under the water, so that none of them saw her. It's not that she hated people, but, she didn't know where she was, and, didn't want to scare people off, or something worse.

While she didn't trust her father with his truth about not trusting this world, even she had her limits. As she was about to pull up to the surface, she noticed a young girl struggling to stay afloat in the water. Ariel let out a soft sound of surprise, before moving herself towards her. Slowly, but, with a mission in mind.

Just as she got closer, she noticed the girl seemed to be getting herself up. This gave her a small sense of relief, and, she watched to make sure she was actually ok. But, she also noticed something drop off of the girl as she had gone under, and, while keeping her body underwater, Ariel moved towards the direction, and, followed them down to the bottom of the ocean itself.

She debated coming up to swim over there, but, instead she just stayed under the water, and, swim towards the young girl, until she was close enough for her to peek up, without her seeing the bottom half of herself just yet. Ariel pulled her body up out of the water, and, just looked at her. “You know, you probably shouldn't wear things like this in the water. You could lose them.” Ariel said, as she showed the girl the sunglasses.

“Oh my gosh, how did you catch them?” Chloe asked as she turned in the water, a grin on her face. She hadn’t realized anyone else had been out on this portion of the ocean at the moment, but she was certainly happy that someone had saved her sunglasses. They weren’t the greatest or the most fashionable ones of the bunch, but they had always made her happy inside. “Thank you so much!” She held her hand out for them, still rocking back and forth happily in the waves. “I thought for sure that I had lost them for good.” The relief that showed on Chloe’s face was that while they may not be the best out there, they had sentimental meaning to her, that look one gets when something that they thought was gone forever was returned, lessening that heart sting a little, making it easier to breathe again, the tightness of loss gone.

Chloe was getting called from the shore, her eyes rolling a bit at the cajoling nature of her friends back on the shore. She had wanted to stay in the water longer, even if she did now have company, company who seemed far more interesting than the people she was beginning to realize she had outgrown. She waved over at her friends, pulling a face at them to leave her alone, as the taunts and cat-calls continued. Her cheeks flushed red with embarrassment, making her realize just how much she had outgrown her friends in the time she was away. They were still caught in the youth of high school years, young, and free, where Chloe already had her first year of university under her belt, so far beyond them. Her lips twisted into a slight frown, she was upset that this trip home was starting to look like it had been a horrible idea. “Are you here with anyone?” She asked suddenly on a whim. She hadn’t noticed the girl anywhere else on the beach, nor was there anyone else out around them then. It might make for a pretty great day to add some new blood into their mix, maybe make it seem a little a little less like a boring prospect and make it new and exciting again.

“We’re about to get some lunch and you’re more than welcome to come and join us for a while, have some pizza. Maybe as a thank you for saving these for me?” Chloe was struck with the sudden desire to get to know the redhead a little better, which was far from her normal mode that was painfully shy with bouts of extreme extrovertism when the mood hit her. “I’m Chloe, what’s your name?”

Ariel made a face for a moment as she was pondering an answer “Good at holding my breath.” Ariel said, giving a soft smile as the girl turned around towards her. Ariel knew that no-one had noticed her out here, and, that had been her intention, until she had noticed the girl seeming to be sad over the sunglasses dropping in the water. “No problem.” Ariel handed the girl her sunglasses, as she felt the waves pushing her up and down. “Well then I'm glad I can reassure you of that.” Ariel recognised that look on the girl's face. That she had a connection to these sunglasses, that was more then one would think. It was like her with the locket that she wore around her neck. It was a connection that she and her sisters had to both each other, and, their mother.

Hearing a call from the shore, Ariel looked down for a moment, and, moved her hands above her, moving the water around, to make sure that the water kept her tail not as obvious. Ariel didn't know how this woman, and, everyone else would react to a mermaid in this world. And, she didn't want her potential new friend to change her opinion of her one way or the other. This was one of the first times she had been out since she was about 13, and, she didn't want to miss the opportunity to be around these humans. Ariel knew that she was getting to an age where she was not wanting to spend all her time around her sisters and parents. She loved them, but, she needed to stop being protected by them all the time. It was a two way street. “Ah, no. My family... they're um... not a fan of this place. And don't really have a lot of friends.” Ariel let out a soft sigh as she looked down for a moment. She knew that everyone here had people with them, but, her family wasn't going to ever come to see these places with her. Which broke her heart on a few levels.

At her question, Ariel looked surprised for a moment. “Oh uh, I, I can't. Not really in a position to go anywhere aside from the ocean right now. But, you don't need to thank me.” Ariel said, giving her a soft smile. She did want to spend more time with the woman, but, she wasn't sure she was able to leave the ocean. Unless it was high tide of course. “Nice to meet you Chloe. My name's Ariel.”

Fly me to the Moon

”Ariel…that’s a really pretty name. Chloe drawled the name out as she spoke it, sounding it out on her tongue before she realized it was probably strange to be sounding out someone’s name like she was. ”It really sucks that your family doesn’t like the beach…” Chloe stated, still bobbing along with the waves, completely oblivious to the tail in the water below her, her mind was elsewhere at the moment, thinking about how horrible it would have been for her family to not like coming to the beach, or on vacation of any type. ”That sounds like a real messed up situation, not liking the beach.” Chloe leaned her head back, setting her sunglasses back into place on her nose, happy to have them back and to be soaking up the sun. As soon as she realized that her words could be taken as rude, she immediately straightened back up and quickly added, ”Not that there’s anything wrong with that! I just mean, I’m not sure I could live without the beach. It’s been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, and where I’m going to school, we don’t have weather like this, so the beach isn’t the same. I think it’s always cold where I go to school. Not the type of weather for someone who’s used to warm California weather.”

Chloe was content to stay in the waves a little while longer as she thought over the other girl’s words, about why she couldn’t come to shore yet. ”Are you trying to avoid someone? Is that why you’re out here in the waves alone? Chloe was trying to avoid her group of friends as well, so the answer had come to her easily enough. Of course this was the best place to hide from someone. Most people who came to the beach came to be seen in their swimwear, or to socialize with people, or God forbid, try to flirt with someone. But for those who wanted to escape, who wanted to feel the grounding nature of the sea, the waves were the best place to be. Chloe made a well-timed jump, riding another wave that decided to come crashing through. She tilted her head back laughing, especially since she remembered this time to put a hand up and put a hand on her sunglasses to prevent them from being knocked off her face once again. She finally turned her attention back to Ariel, her wide smile dropping some. ”I don’t mean to pry, but I don’t mind staying out here with you a little while longer if you are trying to avoid someone. Us girls have to stick together, especially if we need to avoid someone.”

Chloe had her fair share of relationships in the past that she wanted to forget and avoid, and if she was being completely honest with herself, she was wanting to avoid the mess that was happening back with her friends back in the shore, so staying out in the waves a little while longer was preferable for her as well. And if it meant she was going to get some time to make a new friend, and possibly keep her from having to wander back to the realization that she was growing further and further apart from her current group of friends, then she was all for that as well. ”But the offer still stands, if you get hungry, or want to go in you’re more than welcome to join us, we’ll have more than enough food to share, and we could always do with someone else to the group.”

“Thanks” Ariel said, giving a soft smile at the woman. “Yeah, and, when you think about where we live, it seems kind of ironic, I think that's the word anyway.” Ariel felt the waves bouncing her up and down, a feeling she had gotten used to in the last 19 years. “Our family is complicated, you could say” Ariel chuckled as she watched the girl put the items back on her face, she still didn't know what they were, but, obviously the woman had wanted them back for a reason. “It's fine. Don't worry about it. My family has been kind of messed up, as you put it for a while now. Ever since my mother died, my father has gotten a lot more overprotective when it comes to me and my sisters. Beaches aren't really common where we are. We have a bit of a trip to try and find any.”

Ariel glanced down for a moment as she noticed that her tail was coming into view again, quickly moving her hands to position the waves in the right space to keep it hidden. She looked up as she heard the girl speak again. “You could say that. I mean I came here to avoid someone, but, the reason for keeping myself in here is a bit more complicated then that.” Ariel knew that this was an understatement. Ariel knew that when it came to her father, the best way to avoid him was to go through one of the portals and go to a land that wasn't Atlantica. She never meant any harm to anyone, she had just wanted to see more of the worlds then just the ocean, she had seen that. Feeling another wave come in, Ariel felt herself being bounced up, and, she hoped that her tail wasn't going to end up being seen by other people. Ariel moved her hand to the locket that hung around her neck, it was something that her mother had given her and all of her sisters before she died. The last thing she wanted to do was lose that. Ariel looked back up as she heard the girl speak again. “No, it's fine. I kind of like the sound of that. I really don't want to go back yet, and, yeah I guess we do.”

Ariel knew that her father was going to be mad no matter when she got back, so it really didn't matter that she stay here for a bit longer. Ariel was sad that she didn't really have the same relationship with her sisters anymore, since their mother died. She would give anything to have a relationship on the level they'd had when they were all younger. “As much as I won't to, I really can't join you guys. And, since my explanation will make me sound kind of insane, I can already sense that. Just look down, but, please don't freak out. The last thing I need is attention from everyone here.” Ariel sighed softly before looking down, and, using her hands to move the waves that had hidden her tail, making it visible to the girl who was in front of her.

Chloe was enjoying the waves still as Ariel told her about her family. Chloe just couldn’t relate much to that. Her father was hard working, and provided for her and her mother very well, but Chloe could empathize some. While she may not have really understood having a family that wasn’t super close, she knew enough people who had come from broken homes to know some of the stories. ”I’m really sorry about your mother, and your father’s response to that. It does sound really complicated.” Chloe frowned, not sure what else to say to that, but nodded about the trip to the beach. She could definitely understand that one. Being far from a beach that was worth having a swimsuit for, as was such where she was going to school – it was far too cold most of the year – being that far north. Chloe wouldn’t be able to deal with not having California to come home to, and her sunny beaches nearly all year round. She couldn’t imagine what it would be like living somewhere in a land locked state, with as much as she loved the ocean and the water.

A gentle wave crested over then, and Chloe bounced along with it, holding her sunglasses this time in case it went over her head, giggling with glee at the sensation of not being able to touch bottom, before being deposited back down on the sea bed, the sand gently seeping up between her toes as she struggled a moment to get her footing. When she was finally standing again, she laughed and nodded to Ariel. ”I’m not so sure about insane, I mean a lot of things in this world don’t make a whole lot of sense, so never think that something you’re going to say is going to sound like insanity.” But that was before Chloe looked down, her eyes going wide as dinner plates as she slapped a hand over her mouth to stop herself from screaming. Chloe back peddled in the water a step or two, her foot coming down on a shell as she did, and she let loose the small yelp of fright that she had been holding back before her face turned bright red. She had to be seeing things. Her had been out in the sun too long, there was simply no way that what she had just saw was real.

Chloe placed a hand to the side of her head and checked the beach – no one seemed to have noticed them out there still. Children were yelling in delight all up and down the beach, so her yell would have gone unnoticed by many – or just written off as a yell by some teenagers out in the waves being goofs. Chloe took another couple of seconds to really get a good look. Nope. Tail and all was still there. She looked back up to Ariel’s face, the look of shock on her own probably telling enough, before Chloe took a deep breath and recognition finally set in. Her name was Ariel…. As in, the Little Mermaid, as in, … As in Chloe’s brain just shut down a bit, before her mouth started working again.

”You’re a mermaid… an honest to God mermaid.” Chloe felt her jaw go slack a bit, before she continued. ”No wonder you don’t want to go up on the beach! You don’t have legs right now, you do have them occasionally, though right? I mean that’s the way it went in the story, of course, that’s a bad story, I don’t really like that story all that much. Oh my god, you’re a mermaid!” Chloe’s voice had fallen into a hushed tone so that if anyone came close, they’d not hear what she was saying.
