social skills are down to zero. all systems fail.

Work had been a new experience. If he could even call it work. It seemed like more of a weird dream than anything, not quite a nightmare but certainly weird. He wasn't comfortable, if anyone was wondering, in the modern getup he was wearing. Forced to wear, more like it. Because apparently, uniforms were required in animal control, even through he could catch things in his usual attire. Ask anyone! So he was trapped in some beige, polyester blend which, looked just great. So fashionable. So uncomfortable.

The work itself, was a blend of people complaining about creatures which were seriously harmless (something he tried to inform one man but he was too busy screaming "Kill it! For the love of God! Kill it!" when Newt finally had a very cute little rat by the tail) and either in their house, or just outside it. Somewhere around the third person complaining about mice when he was really there for something else altogether, Newt had stopped listening, just going through the motions and finally at clocking out time, he released said rodents into a field away from most people, like some sort of weird pied piper. No where in the job description did he read that extermination was mandatory. No wonder they thought the dodo, as muggles called them, were extinct, they seemed pretty keen to wipe out everything else.

Newt was without a doubt tired. Tired of people, tired of hearing complaining, tired. Who knew the house elf relocation department would ever actually look appealing. He wasn't even sure what time it actually was, his pocket watch, was still in the pocket of his blue coat, which was in his case, which Tina had under her watchful eye. Common sense would have told him there were clocks everywhere in the future but at the moment, he just didn't care. It wasn't that important. Just like his boss had told him to redirect some complaints to the extermination service. He hadn't been joking either, not that Newt had even suggested that once. He caught every little mouse, rat and any other little critter, in addition to the usual. He even found time to get some lady's cat out of a tree. It had been a busy day.

He climbed the steps leading to the library without his usual quick footedness. He was barely even watching where he was going. Thankfully it seemed the few people he came in contact with got out of his way, rather than the other way around. Newt came to a stop once he reached the counter, leaning heavily upon it. "Tina, can I have my case, please?" No, hello. No, how was your day? Just right to the point. At least he had managed to say please. Somehow or another, he just felt less than human. It wasn't the rats, or the family of mice that had been living in a porch light (although he didn't even know what that was until today), it was the people, the muggles, the noise. Right now, he hated it. Every second of it. He just wanted to go home.

With Tina having slid his case to him, he collected it. Quite literally, he was holding on to as much home as he had. Any other time, he would have gone back to the B&B but today, he dared anyone to stop him. He had an arsenal of curses and wasn't afraid to use them! Without a word, he quite literally hopped over the counter onto Tina's side, set down the case, and disappeared down the stairs and into his own little safe haven. Where a proper bath and maybe even a nap was in order.

The former came easier than the latter and in the end, he gave up entirely reemerging from his case in his usual, more comfortable attire, sans his coat. He did, however, feel at least more human than before. "How is it only three in the afternoon?" Honestly, part of him didn't believe his pocketwatch. There was no way it wasn't later in the day. It had to be, right? Although this question and a few looks from some passing muggles made him realising exactly how rude he was being, even more so considering he was on the wrong side of the counter still. No, it wasn't worth looking to see how annoyed Tina was about that. He had a pretty good guess!

Failing to feel that usual warmth, he didn't bother trying to smile. "How has minding the books been?" A pleasant but late question finally asked. Newt was quite sure she could guess how his day went. Half day or whatever it was. He was still rather certain it wasn't worth the pay despite the fact that the inflation of the future had him making nearly two months worth in a single day.

As muggle books go, seemed as good as any to start with.

Newt still wasn't entirely sure what to think of the muggle library. Sure it was cozy and had nice chairs but it was so different than what he was used to. Even back in his own time and place, he never made a habit of going into the library. Not when the reading material he needed was magical in nature. He certainly didn't see any muggle books having the references that he needed. Therefore, like everything else in this place, he was in for something new. Curiosity had gotten the better of him when Tina said that she had gotten a job within it's walls (something that he felt was beneath her talent as an auror but with the lack of wizarding laws here that job didn't exist anyway) and so he had to see the place for himself.

Not wanting her to feel like he was stalking after her (although really she was the one that kept the better eye on him!), he signed up for a library card with one of the other people on staff and did his best to keep out of her line of sight. It took all of twenty minutes for him to find a small stack of books that held some interest. The Secret Language of Cats, An Encyclopedia of Vampires (three pages in told him it was complete nonsense), The Home and Garden Houseplant Care Guide and something out of the fiction section that was about some chap called Doctor Who. All of which he stacked up nice and neat on an end table and sat down in the chair next to them, his case tucked close by on the floor.

The Secret Language of Cats was the first on order, he cracked the book open and began to read. How long he sat there, Newt really wasn't sure, going page to page and suffering disappointment at the lack of movement of the the cats in the pictures. Generally though, he had yet to find a single shred of information he didn't already guess. If the average muggle didn't know this stuff about a house cat then it was no wonder they couldn't handle anything larger than that.

By chapter four he gave up entirely, starting a new stack which An Encyclopedia of Vampires followed close behind as the the Houseplant Care Guide when it failed to name a single plant that wasn't mundane. With one book left, he picked it up and began to read. Flicking page to page, so absorbed in the story before him it didn't quite register that someone was talking to him or was that at him?

The sound of one of the clasps of his case popping open, got him to move a hand to lock it again his eyes never leaving the book. However, that split second was enough for him to realise that someone was standing there. Lowering his book finally in managed a "Oh, hello." but for the length of time that person had been standing there, he really couldn't say.

Newt knew he was stuck but he hadn't entirely given up all hope of being able to contact the outside world. At the very least the Ministry needed to know what was going on here. Some wizard or witch was conducting some sort of experiment that did well in possibly damaging the relationship between the magical and non-magical people. And really it was downright weird. Unnatural. He still wasn't even completely sure where he was or didn't want to believe it. A portal was certainly a fast way to get to America but the boat was safer. At least that he knew he could get off. Here he was held captive right along with the whole host of strange people and things. Colour televisions, loud cars and some of the weirdest clothing he had ever seen in his life and he had traveled the world!

Not knowing what else to do, Newt had torn a page from his sketchbook and wrote a simple but effective note to the Ministry, detailing everything he could about where he was (or thereabouts) and what the locals had told him. That, as it turned out, was the easy part. Magical post apparently didn't make it where ever they were, and so he was left trying to find an owl in the hopes that the creature would understand the sort of need he was in and the task required of it. So once again Newt was out for a walk.

Perhaps waiting until nightfall may have been a better idea but there was a sense of urgency. No one knew where he was, he had missed his meeting by days now and having his case with him didn't exactly make him feel any better. Why couldn't have that portal get him get the lock fixed and his London business settled before sending him off to wherever he was now.

Finding an owl in the middle of the day was a challenge but not impossible. After no less than four hours, Newt found a particularly angry screech owl. Although odds were that anyone would be angry after being woke up with an accio spell but needs must. Any other time Newt might have been more careful about the whole production but he wanted to go home.

"Now, come on." He spoke to the owl who did it's best to wiggle away, it's beak aiming for his fingers. "I just need your help now. It won't hurt a bit. Please." These words did very little to improve the owl's mood. Unaccustomed to tying a letter to an uncooperative owl's leg, he dropped the letter three times, almost got it tied on when the owl managed to reach one of his fingers, and finally Newt let the owl go entirely when the creature's talons found their way into his forearm.

Feathers ruffled but certainly not bleeding, the owl gave him a last look of hate and a snooty hoot before swooping away and into the forest beyond. It was owl: One, Newt: Zero. There was no doubting that. Blood dripped from his hand and arm, giving the ground small crimson dots. Forcing himself to take deep breaths instead of the shallow ones he really wanted to (after all, that had hurt!) he took out his wand and cast a small healing spell which at least stopped the bleeding.

Angry looking scabs and the cuts to his shirt and coat were proof enough that something had happened. Newt studied the injury with increasing annoyance. "Bugger!" He hissed. Although not being able to send the note was more annoying than the injury. However, hippogriffs had nothing on the run-of-the-mill owl if they were all like that one. Knowing any of those things didn't make him feel any better. If he couldn't get a message out, what was he supposed to do?

A snapping twig, or something much like it, caught his attention and he quickly tucked the wand away, stuffing the letter he failed to send in his pocket, he tried his best to look as if he was studying the nearby trees like some ill prepared birdwatcher. Keeping his left arm down at his side, he hoped it would hide the not even dried blood from the sight of whoever was there. If it even was someone. He didn't need awkward questions after all. Maybe if he just looked busy, they'd just keep walking. Indeed, that was the plan.

The portal had swallowed him up. Disappearing just as quickly as it had formed and leaving no trace of the the innocent wizard in London. Coming out the other side failed to give Newt any sense of familiarity or pleasant feelings of any kind. The forest was thick and while he had traveled the globe researching some of the world's most dangerous (and some not so dangerous) creatures, this was something else. Any passersby, although he doubted there were any, would have little trouble in noticing his shocked expression. Mouth slightly agape, frozen in place, wayward papers in one hand, his case in the other. He had been many places but this, this was just madness.

He turned around on the spot, looking for anything that made the slightest bit of sense. So far there wasn't one. Just trees as far as he could see. They were nice looking trees filtering sunlight that dappled the patches of green undergrowth. Any other time he might have been happy to get a chair and enjoy the peace but he couldn't. Not when he had a meeting to get to. The Ministry was certainly going to hear about this once he found his way back. As often he had broken certain rules that was perhaps ironic but at least nothing he had ever done had hurt anyone.

His case twitched. Newt blinked, looked down at it, and closed it back up tight. The last thing he needed was another escape. One was bad enough when he knew where he was, a second where he didn't wasn't the way to go. With only one logical thought coming to mind, he pulled his wand from a jacket pocket and turned a nearby rock into a rather lumpy, grey chair, which he sat down upon. He needed a chance to think rationally. Panic was hardly his friend and as much as he hated to be late for that meeting at Flourish and Blotts, if it came down to it, he would just have to apologize. It wasn't every day that a person got sucked through a magical portal and dropped in a forest.

He worked a sticky, lemon candy from it's wrapper and leaned back into the chair. Newt needed a game plan and he needed one fast. Finding out exactly where he was seemed the best bet. Making sure there were no muggles around that might see things they shouldn't was another. There was always the more horrifying thought that he was going to have to wait around for a while. Having to keep an eye on his case (and its inhabitants) wasn't his happiest thought but at least it did contain everything he needed within reason. He wasn't completely screwed even if he was lost.

"I am in a spot of bother." Newt remarked aloud, rubbing his temples. Saying it out loud didn't exactly make him feel any better. Of course, he looked ridiculous in a lumpy chair and with his case at his side. Although who was to see? Aside from the usual wildlife of the forest, he didn't hear so much as a peep of muggle life. No talking, no sputtering of car engines and no steam engines. It was almost like he was back in some remote corner of the globe and that was problematic. Where ever he was, he was very far from where he wanted to be.

So everyone, this is Newt, if you haven't noticed. He's an awkward wizard who just so happens to fall through a portal with his magical case of magical beasts and is now trapped in Storybrooke. Great, right? He doesn't agree. Having been in the late 1920's up until now, he's not really adjusting to modern living all that well. He doesn't really like of it and is pretty much a spoilsport.

He currently has a job working in animal control, seeing as he had to do something for some money and that was least objectionable right now. He's also really talented at catching things so it's just possible that your character may have seen him around town with a giant net (just kidding). Forget the net but he's still around.

In his personal life, right at the moment, he's making some friends. Much harder to make an enemy out of him so, odds are he'll be nice to you unless you're this talented person who's managed to piss him off. I give kudos to anyone who manages it. Generally though, he's trying to keep himself to himself and we'll see how long that actually lasts.

Romantically, I have to say right now that he's 100% taken by Ms. Tina Goldstein, he just hasn't realised that yet. So please no romantic plots. No, you're not going to manage to drive a wedge between them and any one sided swooning, I actively discourage. Those plots get old quickly. Really. So please don't do them. I'm much more interested in how many friends and enemies he can manage to make.
