a present years in the making

"Come on, Tina. It's only a bit further." Newt called back, as he continued his brisk pace through the thick forest, slowing only to go around an impasse or duck under a low branch. It was exciting. The smile on his face had hardly dulled since they had started out earlier in the day. It seemed like an age since they had gotten the time to travel anywhere, or rather, where they wanted to. Something kept coming up, the delay that encompassed birthdays, a wedding anniversary, and Christmas - but now they were here. Education was part of it but little did Tina know there was more to the trip that had been delayed five times than simple met the eye.

Maybe that was sneaky of him but it had gotten hard to surprise Tina. She was annoyingly good at guessing things sometimes. This time though, he was almost positive she wouldn't know what hit her. Well, not literally of course! Newt adjusted his backpack and then kept on going. It felt so weird not carrying a case with him on an adventure but things had changed and time, as it did, had ticked by. That didn't mean that he didn't have means to collect something if need be but with any luck, he wouldn't require that this time around. Yes, for once, the goal was simple observation.

That didn't mean that he wasn't marching at a half run. Alright, alright. So he was excited! Each step taken got them that much closer and, well, he couldn't wait. Everything was just perfect. As much as he had told Tina they were here to get in contact with one of the centaur herds in the area, it wasn't entirely the truth. Yes, he did want to hopefully get in contact with said centaurs (although he still wasn't sure if it was going to happen apparently they were a reclusive lot even toward magical folk) but he had something better than that up his sleeve.

Stopping just as fast as he had been walking, Newt studied the small clearing which opened up in front of him and then got a map out of his pack which he examined. "Almost there." He grinned at Tina. At least the poor woman had adapted to keeping up with him but there were still times he couldn't help but wonder if she was keen to leg lock him just so he'd stop for a second.

Putting the map away, Newt continued on, slower this time, properly what was in front of him. The rubbed tree to the right, that broken branch, the hoof prints which he purposely made sure he stepped on. Yes, there was a difference between a centaur and the hoof of what they were looking for and he wasn't about to have the surprise ruined because Tina had learned the difference. After all, she was terribly clever and picked up all kinds of information especially about the creature on page 203 of his book.

Rounding a particularly large tree, he stopped and froze. His grin widening, he motioned for Tina to come closer. "Look." He spoke more in a whisper now. "See what's right over there?" Pointing to the far end of the latest clearing, there stood nothing less than a real, live unicorn grazing on a bit of grass. At a distance still, for safety's sake but it was hard to mistake the creature for anything else. "I told you I'd find you one." Newt kissed her cheek. "Happy birthday." You know, months late and everything.

Isn't this romantic?

Time had ticked by in a steady fashion and before he knew what had happened, the full moon was upon them. No, he had no concerns about werewolves or any of those other things that people fussed over on the full moon but there were the mooncalves and that was enough. After all, Newt still wasn't entirely sure that this was a good idea. When he had suggested watching the mooncalves for their monthly dance, he meant in the case. Tina had talked him into something different and untested. Although the worst they could do was damage a few plants, it wasn't like some of the larger creatures which called the case home. Then there was the fact that Tina hadn't seen them dance before and really, in his mind, it was a sight worth seeing. Maybe it was their large feet and eyes or just how they danced but it was something he had yet to grow bored of.

With much the same kit as their 4th of July celebration (save the bucket of moon pellets and an oil lamp as Newt had some notes to make), although at least with this event everyone knew about it, they had gone away from town. Selecting a meadow which was as good as any, while mooncalves preferred the openness of crop fields, he hoped that would be enough for the little terrors of Cornwall. Night was setting in, the sun giving it's last bit of light as a blanket of stars took over the sky - with the guest of honour, the moon, not quite ready to make an appearance.

It was a perfect enough setting for watching the dance of the mooncalves. As much as he wanted to say that, unlike them, he wasn't out to impress, that would have been a lie. He was eager, very eager. That borderline terror, disbelief, all of it, had faded - although it was just possible he still couldn't entirely believe that they were dating. That label was... very real and the fact that Tina had felt the same way, well, the days that had ticked by hadn't lessened his nerves every time he looked at her. The honest truth was that he had never felt like that before. Never, not even with... this was something different and nothing he was going to take lightly.

Newt smiled looking over at her before really looking over the selected meadow. It seemed just about right and there was no risk of chasing them down Main Street and the other fields nearby had some distance between them so that gave time to stop them if they wandered. Honestly, he never put it passed them. While Tina could be fooled by their innocent appearance and large eyes, he, he was not.

Maybe not everyone considered the idea of watching an actual mating dance as a fun time out or others may have gone as far as questioning the sort of motives that were going on. These modern muggles never seemed to manage to not have their minds in the gutter though, awful really. "I'll let them out if you set up?" Newt suggested a bit hesitantly - he still didn't trust them!

Although whether or not he actually did or didn't was moot. Hopefully they behaved themselves but it was anyone's guess. As unsure as ever, Newt walked out to about the middle of the meadow and set the case down. With a sigh he popped open the case and sure enough the little buggers made their appearance without too much coxing. Great, the moment of truth. At least if things went wrong they had plenty of moon pellets.

forget aliens, I'm here for the mooncalves

Newt had some serious doubts about this being what he was hoping for. Although there was no way that he wasn't going to take the time to check it out. After all, if by some miracle it just happened to be what he thought, well, he wanted to get there before anyone did something stupid. Farmers did tend to get irate, after all, when it came to crop circles. Even if other people might have found it a strange way to spend his lunch break and he didn't exactly explain to Tina why he needed his case in the middle of the day. Maybe she just thought it safer not to ask.

Still, he had an hour and he was going to put it to good use. Covering ground in the quick paced gait he always had, Newt probably looked a little strange. In his animal control uniform, all beige and something he still hated and despite that had to wear, and carrying his case. Maybe not the oddest sight in the world considering what he was looking for but he didn't really expect to see anyone anyway. There hadn't been much talk about it in town. Something he had overheard in the diner. Having skipped out before actually ordering anything, he took a bite out of a less than desirable sandwich, as he walked. Better than starvation.

Although, he covered the last bit of ground standing between him and the bean field in question, he found nothing but disappointment. As muggles called them, they were crop circles, sadly this particular pattern wasn't made by the mooncalves he was hoping to see. Not that he needed more of them! There really was a large enough herd in the case and sometimes he still couldn't help but wonder whether or not Tina was more interested in them than she was him.

"Bugger." Newt voiced that disappointment, not that he saw anyone around to worry about saying worse. What a shame it was. He had rather hoped for the chance of wild mooncalf herd but it seemed that things weren't working in his favour. Although, he didn't want to complain too much, not considering the means of getting there were ones that meant anything that passed through a portal couldn't leave. Still the magizoologist in him couldn't have helped being excited at the prospect. Even if it was terribly short lived and his lunch hour was ticking away.

No less disappointed, case in one hand, sandwich in the other, he studied the design no doubt put together by some naughty teenagers. He had to admit, they had done quite a good job. It was very eye catching although, he was positive that the farmer who owned the field felt otherwise.

The birdwatcher and the villain in disguise.

A day off was something that Newt wasn't about to waste, not with the surprisingly nice weather and comfortable temperatures. Using that time to work on other things was no doubt a better way to go but he didn't see the harm in a little bird-watching. Muggles could keep their television sets, he was quite happy to be outside taking in the wildlife. The very mundane wildlife although he couldn't help but hope to get another glimpse of that snidget again. Thus far the creature had proved very illusive.

So looking as out of place as he usually did (because no matter what anyone said, he was quite happy with his current attire, thank you very much), sans any sort of coat as it was just too warm for that nonsense and his shirt sleeves rolled up revealing light evidence of the odd bite or claw mark. Not that he really cared what he looked like, he wasn't out to impress (and there was only one person that fell under that category and she was at work) nor did he see the birds and other forest creatures making comments about his appearance.

Finding a clearing that seemed as good as any to stop in, Newt set down is case - didn't seem fair to have Tina watch it and the less she knew about the number of times that niffler had escaped the better - got out his equally 1920's binoculars, a quill, ink, and a small notebook and sat down upon a log. While he did have a chair he could have gotten this was just easier and if he did see a snidget he wasn't going to be sitting long. Even if that was a rather large amount of wishful thinking on his part.

Lastly he fished out a modern copy of a Guide to Birds which he set along with everything else and so began the art of bird-watching. Although it was much more like just making notes on what he had seen and looking up those he wasn't sure about. The average muggle would have labeled it boring and compared to studying the nesting habits of the Swedish short-snout it was but needs must. At least it also gave him time to think about recent events, those regarding Tina anyway.

With his binoculars fixed on a very cross looking woodpecker, he nearly jumped when it sounded as if something had fallen. Or was that someone? Considering the crunch of leaves, the snap of a branch or two it certainly sounded as much. There weren't too many other things it could be. Still, he didn't see anything - not that it was hard to see why with the number of trees and the odd pocket of brambles here or there, perfectly capable of hiding something of decent size. After looking around, he decided it was nothing at all even if he didn't believe that himself and went back to looking through his binoculars. Still, he didn't figure even if it was a person that they'd be interested in the likes of him. How wrong that idea really was.

An attempt at something simple. Romance still in the air.

Newt was running so far behind. Had he been a mere muggle, he would have canceled this whole idea of dinner and talked Tina into the diner instead. However, being a wizard instead had a number of advantages; like being able to apparate to the B&B or having the pasta make itself while he changed yet again. At least he had caught the little bugger that was Niffler. After no less than two hours, the creature had been found in the park bobbing around in the wishing fountain pocketing any coins his little arms could reach. Never had Newt been so happy about nifflers and their high buoyancy, just getting the coins he had no doubt took the little creature hours. Although, he had stolen someone's diamond earrings but that was nothing that Newt was all that keen to get into, it was much easier just to leave them where they fell. Today he was not getting accused of something like that.

Catching the creature still had been a production and he found himself soaked to the skin before the end. That had made him a right mess but magic literally did wonders. Now on his third outfit for the day, he was still comfortable in a navy pair of trousers, a not quite perfectly white shirt and a steel blue vest to complete the look. It was hardly fashionable even by 20's standards but he had never set out to fit into those type of standards. He had one suit tucked away somewhere (really he wasn't entirely sure where it was) and, if he could remember correctly, that had last been worn to a funeral. Hardly something that got much use.

At least dinner was coming together once he was fit to get back into the kitchen. A few flicks of his wand and the tomatoes, garlic, and onions cut and added themselves to a pot of browned beef. Oil, pepper, basil and a few other herbs and spices found their way in after. At just the right time the cavatelli pasta added itself to the boiling water, while Newt gave the bread he had bought a little extra flavour with garlic, olive oil and a touch parsley. Everything, everything was coming together nice until the cheese - with only a small block of parmigiano-reggiano, he had to hope that Tina wouldn't notice the substitution although he was almost positive that she hadn't been to Italy before or at the very least wouldn't smack him with a spoon for the error. Not that, such a thing had ever happened but some of those older Italian ladies could look rather menacing with a spoon.

Newt checked his pocketwatch, time was certainly ticking away. Thanks to Niffler and his need to take things that weren't his. The table set itself and several candles came alive giving off that soft light. He tasted the sauce, standing over the pot thoughtfully for a moment, he added a little bit of sugar. It wasn't his best sauce but considering the time he was working with - well, it would just have to do - again, he couldn't help but hope that Tina didn't notice. Of course, he couldn't help but feel that anything not burnt had to taste better than some of the things they served in that diner.

He sliced and moved the bread over to the table by hand before selecting a record; one more subdued, pleasant, not quite a low jazz but near it. It worked as a little background noise anyway. Why he was setting the scene was beyond him. Of course, he often had a record playing if he could get away with it. A habit that stemmed from eating alone maybe. Something that broke the silence. Whatever, it was it all seemed pleasant enough if people - or rather Tina - just ignored the stacks of papers and things he had placed out of the way. They were still all very much so there, he was hardly out to impress.

Tasting the pasta this time, Newt found it done well enough. By magic it drained itself and invisible hands dished it out, the sauce and cheese following it. Aside from a lack of dessert, he couldn't see why someone wouldn't be pleased with it. Of course, there was no wine either but did everyone require wine with dinner? In Italy maybe but here? If that was the case, it was something of an oversight considering the plain water but it was still something considering the amount of time he had been after Niffler.

"Ah, you're here!" Newt sounded a little too pleased to see her as Tina made her appearance. "Just in time. Please." He motioned to a chair which pulled itself out. "I hope you like it." Alright so he was already feeling a bit nervous, cooking for other people was scary. Sure they had done lunch but that was different. This, this was actually for her and that honestly scared the hell out of him, all he could hope though, was that those feelings didn't quite reach his face.
