29 . N/A . Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them . Eddie Redmayne . Other Realms.
PersonalityNewt has often been remarked as a quiet person and sometimes to serious for his own good. Even as a child he preferred books and learning to the joyous abandonment that most children his age preferred. While he's not averse to a good joke, he doesn't entirely seek out humour, however, he often finds it where his work with creatures are concerned. Some things have happened that were generally beyond his ability not to laugh.
Generally, Newt is a Hufflepuff to a tee. Steadfast and loyal. However, he isn't foolish enough to offer up blind loyalty to a person (although the events with Leta Lestrange where rather close to that) but it does take quite a bit for him to be willing to walk away from someone. When someone manages to get to that point though Newt does have quite the ability to be angry just like any other person in the world.
One of the more difficult things for Newt is dealing with people. He takes social awkwardness to an art form. For some reason dragons are easier to understand than people. Newt does his best not to entirely be rude to people but his tenancy to mumble and start talking about various, sometimes unrelated, facts can rub some people the wrong way. Back in school days it was something that the bullies had quite the heyday with.
For those who look past his flaws in that area and are considered friends, Newt is a pleasant person to be around. He loves a good debate and does his best to be helpful. He's also good at being a friendly ear and can listen without judgement. Although it still is far easier to talk to almost any creature than a person.
Powers/AbilitiesThe biggest power Newt has by far is the fact that he's a wizard. As long as he has his wand (as wandless magic is extremely difficult and something that he only managed once on sheer accident when he got on the wrong side of a particularly aggressive dragon) if anything happened to his wand, that would more or less be the end of his magic until he could get a replacement.
In addition to that problematic thing, Newt (like every other witch or wizard out there) cannot tell the general population about being magical. Doing so (of course there are exceptions) is very much so illegal so he keeps this secret to himself and others that are magical like him.
His magical ability isn't limitless. While his Hogwarts professors might go as far as saying he was an excellent student, he's hardly great at everything. Newt'll argue until the moon calves come out that any idiot can turn their assignments in on time. That being said, his strongest talents are with magical creatures as well as herbology (as some magical creatures have certain diets and some plants are great antidotes for venom.
The remainder of his skills, involve charms, transfiguration and defensive magic just to name a few. Although Newt, personally feels that his defensive magic leaves much to be desired – while he does have the ability to keep himself alive if need be, there's always the reality that going against someone with real talent in that area would end badly for him.
Outside the world of magic, from his worldwide travels, Newt knows a total of seven languages and enjoys playing the flute if he has the time. His knowledge of the non-magical world also is more extensive than others like him. While he would hate to have to live “as a muggle” he can at least manage to handle their money and understands the postal system. In fact, he has a muggle pen pal he met in Spain on a family holiday that he still keeps in touch with.
HistoryNewt Scamander, or Newton Artemis Fido Scamander if you would prefer his full name, came into the world on February 24, 1897. The younger brother of Theseus Scamander, by several years, he was brought up in a rather normal family life. Well, as normal as one could have when it came to being a wizard. From a young age, Newt was remarked as being a bright boy though he spent much time in his elder brother's shadow. While the two do speak and manage some sort of relationship, to this day they are not entirely close. Getting through Christmas dinner is something of the highlight.
Despite being compared to his brother is many different ways, Newt learned to adapt quickly and found a certain joy in Magizoology. With his mother a very active breeder of hippogriffs, she encouraged this line of investigation on his part. Much of this grew from numerous dissections of Horklumps at the age of seven, along with intense study of the creatures that lived in the area. From there the interest and passion grew.
Upon his acceptance to Hogwarts, he was sorted into Hufflepuff just like his mother before him. Being in school didn't entirely help him gain the understanding of anyone. Again, his older brother's tact and charisma left quite a shadow. Newt did not entirely mind this and did what he always did to any problem he wanted to avoid and that was to stick his head into his studies and forget about what he could. At least until Leta Lestrange came along.
Also not the type to fit in and with an equal interest in magical creatures, the two formed something of a close friendship. By the time they were sixth years, Newt had become rather smitten but that was also when things started to go wrong. One of Leta's experiments with a Jarvey nearly took the life of another student and she was in something of some hot water. With loyalty (and love) getting the better of his common sense, Newt took responsibility for this accident and was ready to face the music.
Leta never made an attempt to stop him. She seemed quite content to let him take the fall. That was until Albus Dumbledore, the Transfiguration professor then, spoke out on his behalf when the sentencing and expulsion from Hogwarts was to be announced. While Newt never did hear all that was said by Dumbledore at the time, whatever was said did the trick.
The expulsion and charges were dropped, however, the court had very strong wording on what would happen if anything like that ever happened again. His mother had been very far from pleased over such things and while she was a hard woman to please before that, after, Newt had lost quite a bit of her respect. To this day, there's very little has actually managed to make her proud of him.
Once his life returned back to normal, Leta had distanced herself from him. Newt, even though he still felt that pang of love for her, couldn't quite bring himself to not hold some level of resentment. Part of him hadn't exactly expected her to let him take the blame. She hadn't done the right thing and that was a hard pill to swallow.
However, he did keep his nose clean and graduated from Hogwarts where he landed a job in the Ministry of Magic's Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. It was here that he spent two painful years in the Office for House-Elf Relocation before getting transferred to the Beast Division where his talent and abilities were finally recognized and led to rapid promotion.
In 1917, he was part of the Eastern Front in a confidential Ministry of Magic program to wrangle Ukrainian Ironbellys. This was cancelled after eight months as the dragons were remarked to only respond to Newt while trying to eat everyone else in the project. He was then returned to his office work in the Beast Division. It was mere months later that Augustus Worme of Obscurus Books approached Newt on writing the book that would later be titled Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
Bored with office work and making a meager salary, Newt didn't think twice about the offer and before long was writing and hopping his way across the globe for research. The low point of his travels was in Africa where he met an Obscurial in Sudan. While unable to save the girl who played host to the Obscurus, he was able to capture and contain the parasitical force within a magical bubble.
In a continuation of his studies in 1925, he observed magical creatures in their natural habitat before stopping - for what was supposed to be a brief while - in New York in 1926. It was here where another accident occurred involving his creatures. With his magical suitcase (home to select animals he had collected through his travels) had been opened by a muggle by the name of Jacob Kowalski. Several creatures escaped causing slight chaos, more of which came in the days that followed with yet another Obscurial. In the end, the Obscurial was killed by the MACUSA much to Newt's dismay. He then used his knowledge of magical creatures to very nearly single handedly save the magical community from exposure and captured none other than Gellert Grindelwald.
The trip was not a total waste nor a complete mess of drama. In that time, he met Tina and Queenie Goldstein as well as befriended the muggle, Jacob Kowalski, later giving the man the funds required to start his own bakery. While his time in America was far more adventurous than he planned, it's something that he looks upon fondly. Mostly where Tina is concerned, having started a correspondence between the two of them after his return to England.
While he had every intention of returning to America to give her a copy of his book in person, fate thought otherwise. With his book finally out in print and everything looking up, a stiff breeze knocked some papers out of his hand. Moving to collect them, he was unaware of the portal that had opened up nearby until it was too late. The portal swallowed him up and promptly dropped him in an unknown place.
It's safe to say, for the first time in Newt's life, he's in shock and trying to figure out this new world he's in.
RP SampleThe day had been a productive one. If anything, Newt was proud of that. Of course nearly anything was better than the days of having to work behind a desk surrounded by mountains of paperwork. More than once he had been tempted to charm his desk so he could hide in it and get away from the mundane work. Now, he had to admit, much of that was a distant memory. Merely from time to time it found its way to the front of his mind. At least now, he was free of it.
After all, his book was to hit the shelves next week. The advance copy tucked away in his case didn't count. While he knew every page of the book, every little detail, it was something else actually seeing it in print. Although the picture of him they had put in the back of the book wasn't a very good one. Either that or seeing as it was a picture of himself, it was perfectly normal for it to regularly make faces at him. Having never published anything before, he certainly wasn't sure of how that sort of thing worked.
Really the picture was more than welcome to be as terrible as long as the book sold and he wasn't going to have to return to the boredom of every day life. He liked the traveling, the chance to meet new people, see new places and creatures. Indeed, someone would have to pry all of that out of his cold, dead hands.
Newt hummed the lightest of tunes which was next to impossible to hear (if not entirely so) over the noise of London. Flourish and Blotts wanted to discuss the book launch and he was required to attend. It wasn't like he didn't want to go or that he wasn't happy that they wanted to make a big thing out of it but instead, it was more because of the people. There'd be so many of them and that wasn't the greatest thing. Large crowds always made him nervous and - oh, Merlin! He hoped they didn't want him to do a speech.
Shaking his head at his thoughts, he squeezed between two stopped groups of muggles - tourists by the look of them. Traveling by magic was faster but with the Leaky Cauldron just two blocks away it seemed silly to do that. Maybe he also felt he needed the exercise since he wasn't chasing off after this or that.
A swift wind whipped down the street and a poorly timed one at that. As Newt pulled a paper from his coat pocket to make sure of the time he needed to arrive, the wind blew it away from him. Cursing under his breath, he made after it as it danced its way into an alley. Several awkward stomping motions later, he pinned the paper to the ground - very much so annoyed over the fact that he had chosen to walk - catching papers was so much easier magically.
Paper back in hand, he glanced at it, nodded and stuffed it back into his pocket. What he failed to notice was the portal that had formed behind him and as he turned it was too late by the time he realised his error. The portal swallowed him up and as he came out the other side one thing was for certain - he was not in London anymore.
