Rumple wasn’t sure how long he had been in the cell. He couldn’t imagine it had been very long, no more than a day or two, but time had a way of getting away from someone when they were secluded in a dark, dreary cell with no contact to the outside world. He had done the best he could to keep track of the time, but his body and mind were still very weak from his attempt to help one Hamish Macbeth. Sacrificing a small piece of his soul to keep the man from death’s door had left him in a frail state, in need of a bit of help himself.

No wonder if had been so easy for the horned king’s minions to capture him. He had been heading home from the shop when they had appeared almost from no where, a large group of the undead surrounding him soundlessly. While he had fought with his magic, it was too weak from his fragile condition, and he had soon found himself out of stamina for spells. The zombies, if they could be called that, were too resilient, and managed to keep coming even without heads or limbs, their bodies largely charred from his fireballs. They overwhelmed him, and he had found only darkness.

When next he woke, he found himself lying in a dirty, worn dungeon cell, like the ones back in the Enchanted Forest. The old stone walls were cold and unyielding, the small cell offering no windows or any means of comfort other than the stone floor. His hands were shackled behind him tightly, keeping him from being able to use them effectively. Not that it would have stopped him from using magic, but there seemed to be some kind of enchantment on a thick metal collar around his neck that blocked his powers, rendering him helpless for the time being.

There was another shackle on one of his ankles, with a long chain that extended from it to the middle of the cell. There, the chain was bolted to the stone floor, ensuring that he would not be able to move beyond the boundaries of the cell, even if the metal bar door were opened.

The chains clinked as he shifted and the ground, sitting himself up to lean against the wall with a low groan. He was cold and hungry, miserable in the cell. It seemed they knew he was a powerful magic user- he was not being kept in the same dungeon as the others, though he could sense other living beings in the castle. He seemed to be entirely alone.

Up until that moment, anyway. As the tired man sank against the stone wall, he heard a clatter from somewhere down the long, darkened hallway. It sounded like the mindless drones of the Horned King were heading inside the dungeon, and perhaps they were bringing someone with them, too.

"Nng..." Belle's eyes opened blearily. She sluggishly gained consciousness, realizing slowly that she had been sedated, hands cuffed behind her back. How long had she been out? And where was she...? And who would do such a thing?

She was in some bleak dungeon, as far as she could tell. It felt dank, and the only light afforded its denizens came from dim wall sconces. As of yet, she hadn't seen anyone else, besides her rather gruesome escort. Belle flinched once she realized her captor was, well, rotting.

They stopped outside a cell, similar in appearance to all the previous empty ones they had passed. The humanoid creature released her from her handcuffs. She rubbed at her wrists out of idle comfort as she peered inside the cage. It was too dark to see all the way in, but she spotted chains loosely piled on the floor. Belle stiffened, assuming those were for her.

The gate scraped open and she was unceremoniously pushed into the darkness. Belle lost her balance and fell to her hands and knees, looking over her shoulder to see the gate being locked. With a groan, she sat up to survey the scrapes on her knees and palms. The fear of her unknown circumstances dawning on her, she shook. It didn't help that the dungeon was fairly chilly.

Rubbing her arms and standing up, she saw a chain move. Now she was scared... who or what was she trapped in here with? Steeling her nerves, she called out, "Who's there?" She squinted her eyes, then gasped. "Rumple?" Belle fell back to her knees, just within reach of her weakened husband. "Are you okay? What did they do to you?"

Belle was equal parts panicked and comforted. Rumple was as weak as he'd ever been, but... at least they were together.

Rumple groaned, doing his best to pay attention to what was happening, but he was still much too out of it to fully comprehend his surroundings. He stayed sat against the wall, slumped down and breathing weakly. That was what he was the most focused on at the moment. While it was always a worry what they were there to do to him, it was hardly like they could stop him regardless. He closed his eyes, trying to get the world to stop spinning as he accepted that something was likely to happen to him in the coming moments.

What could they really do? Even in his weakened state, he couldn’t be killed by them. They could do their best, and he would simply recover from the superficial injuries. Well, maybe not entirely, given the cuffs behind his back, but he still couldn’t be killed even without his magic. One small blessing of being the Dark One, maybe.

But it turned out they weren’t there to drag him off to their master this time- they were dropping off someone instead. He heard the grunts and the clanging of the door, shifting a bit to get his eyes open again so he could see who had been made to suffer alongside him.

His eyes didn’t focus before his hears recognized her voice, his body reacting on instinct as he suddenly found the strength to sit himself up against the wall completely. His chest tightened, dread flooding through his system and pumping him full of adrenalin. He looked through the darkness of the cell, his expression one of anguish as his eyes came to rest on his beloved wife.

“Belle,” he gasped, his voice raspy and weak, though the worry was still thickly laced through his words, “are you alright? Did they hurt you?” He was asking more or less the same questions she was asking him, but that was probably to be expected. They were both worried about each other. As much as he wanted to reach out and touch her cheek, offer some kind of comfort, he couldn’t move his hands from behind his back thanks to the shackles.

Belle’s mouth gaped open, at a loss for words. She was locked in a dungeon with her husband, but why? Why were they taken prisoner? And by whom? All these questions came flooding out, though she knew how likely it was that Rumple only knew as much as she did. “Rumple, where are we? What’s going on?” She leaned down so he could see her face from his low vantage point. Belatedly, she added, “I’m alright. I’m okay.”

Belle placed her hand on his cheek and gasped. “You’re freezing!” Not that the cold could do much harm to the Dark One, but she was concerned nonetheless. Though, perhaps, she should be more worried about herself. The cold could certainly make Rumple uncomfortable, but as for Belle, it could be detrimental. All the warmth she would get was from her short sleeved dress. Even that wouldn’t provide much, as it was now grimy and damp after being all but dragged here.

She surveyed Rumple’s situation, looking behind him to see his constraints. Belle tried feebly to pull on the rusted shackles, but even as old as they seemed to be, they still wouldn’t budge. She sighed as the panic welled up.

Scooting back so she was kneeling in front of him again, she cupped his face with both hands. “What can I do? Tell me what I should do.” Her distraught was evident in her voice as it trembled. Her husband was so very weak, and she had little-to-no physical strength of any means herself. Add to that, Rumple’s current lack of magic, and they were rightly up a creek without a paddle. What were they going to do?

Knowing he was likely in no state to take the lead, Belle sat next to him—her arm linked with his as she rested her forehead on his shoulder—and put her brain to work. There were others locked away as well, she had noticed as they pushed her along the damp hallway. But she couldn’t see or recognize anyone. She wanted to shout and find out if anyone was in ear shot, but she also didn’t want to bring punishment down on herself and Rumple.

Rumple sighed faintly, watching her. He could tell she was frightened. He hadn’t been until he saw her there- now he was brimming with panic himself. At least it seemed to give him more energy. He felt far more alert than he had since getting there. This place was a nightmare and now she was in it, too. He didn’t want anything happening to her- he couldn’t bare the idea of her being used against him. Somehow, they needed to escape.

Or be rescued, if anyone cared enough to try. Even if they didn’t care about him, surely they would come for Belle. Someone had to.

It was their only hope for the moment.

He watched as she observed the chains, and he sighed faintly at her attempt to free him. “There’s some kind of magic in them,” he told her, though she hadn’t asked, “I can’t use my powers. I’ve tried.” It was like that cuff Pan had made- it was preventing him from using his magic. More than that, though, it felt like they were draining it from him. Weakening him, not just limiting his ability to use it. As if he needed to be weaker! He’d already struggled to use his powers. Now it seemed impossible.

He looked up at her, frowning. The panic in her face only made his own expression more worried as well, though he wanted to be strong for her. There was hardly any denying that they were in a bad situation, and she was the one in the most trouble, not him.

“It’s going to be alright,” he offered weakly, as though trying to convince the both of them of that as he spoke, “as long as we’re together... We’ll think of something.Or someone will come for us.” Boy, offering comfort really wasn’t his strong suit.

The chains rattled again as he shifted to lean himself against her as she settled next to him. He closed his eyes, frowning though he was happy to have her warmth and comfort next to him. If only they weren’t trapped in a cell when it came around! “Do you have anything on you,” he asked after a moment, “those creatures... They didn’t check me for weapons or anything. I’m not sure they have the capacity. Perhaps... There’s something to pick these locks. My chains, or the door.” He hadn’t brought anything with him, since he generally just used his magic and it was habit to be woefully unprepared, but perhaps she had better luck.

Though with that tiny dress, he was less than certain.

Yes. Yes, as long as they were together, they would be alright. Uncharacteristically, she had to remind herself of that, having lost some of her hope during all this duress. Breathing slowly, she tried to calm herself and assess the situation again. Rumple was right, and Belle considered it a blessing that they were together in this cell. They could have easily ended up in completely different wings of this prison. Wherever this prison was…

Belle thought for a moment. Something to pick the locks with? Well, she didn’t have much on her person when she was taken, and she fretted over the fact. She checked her tiny pockets to be sure, but there was nothing. “No… no, I have nothing on me.” She sat for several silent moments as she replayed the day’s events in her head. Then, suddenly, she perked up. “No, wait. I do!” She reached up to part her hair and pull at something; a loose curl cascaded down, but she paid it no mind. Earlier that day, she had decided to wear her hair up. And to hold it in place… She held the tiny object up, proudly. “A hairpin!”

Moments later, though, she deflated a bit. “I don’t know how to pick a lock…” She had grown up very well off, there was never a reason to need to pick a lock. Granted, she had been around all sorts of characters in Storybrooke. Maybe she had gleaned a little bit off the unscrupulous ones? Her brow furrowed. Surely Killian, or someone, had mentioned lock picking?

Still, she wouldn’t let that keep her from trying. Belle shifted on her knees and got situated next to Rumple’s dominant hand. If she could get this manacle open, maybe he would have the talent needed to free the rest of the locks. She paused only a moment, before leading the pin into the keyhole. “Any pointers?”

Rumple watched her let her hair down, smiling at the sight of the hairpin. It was small and might bend when they tried to use it, but he was happy that it was something, at the very least. If they could get his cuffs off, maybe he could regain enough strength to try and remove the chain on his ankle and make an escape from the prison. But then, if the pin was brittle and there was no promise he would gain back his magic anyway, perhaps another options was better...

“Well, you have the chance to try and figure it out. I don’t think we’re being watched at the moment. The guards are on the outside of the dungeon, watching the doors for intruders... You’re bright. You could figure out how to make the hairpin click the tumblers.” He watched her move to the cuffs on his wrists, frowning a bit as he turned his head over his shoulder to watch her. Of course a part of him wanted to be freed- he was scared.

But a larger part of him was more worried about her.

“You could attempt the door,” he offered after a moment, “instead of my shackles. If that hairpin will only survive a limited number of attempts, it might be better for you to use it to escape yourself.. You could find a way out, or get the keys. It might be better than trying ... To save me.” He winced a little as he said that, if only because he knew it wasn’t going to sit well with her. She wasn’t the type to abandon the people she loved.

Particularly him, as he had learned over the years. For all the terrible things he had done, both to her and the people around her, she had always seen the best in him. Right now, though, he could only see her.

Belle pulled a face, giving Rumple that look at his suggestion. “I’m not leaving this spot without you.” She was not going to abandon him. And… honestly, she was afraid to be on her own in a dungeon filled with who-knows-what. If she had to, she would. But her preference was to gamble on freeing her husband first. If only she could find out if any of their friends were nearby! Then maybe it would be worth opening the gate first. But it was too dangerous to call out. She didn’t want to bring any attention down on their meager attempts to escape.

At least she had been put in the same cell as Rumple. Belle counted her blessings, even when the pros were far outweighed by cons.

Now, as for this lock… Her brow furrowed as she concentrated. It wasn’t so advanced a manacle that she shouldn’t be able to figure it out, she reasoned. It was partially rusted and ancient looking. Trying not to dwell on the eons this dungeon must’ve been around, Belle poked and prodded at the mechanisms within the bindings.

Several minutes passed, and she was no closer to unhinging the lock. Belle sighed in frustration. “We might starve to death before I figure this out.” Their jailers didn’t seem to concerned with their wellbeing; she assumed food wasn’t something they could count on. Even if they did bring them something, Belle would question just how edible it actually would be.

Taking a break to rest her fingers, she sat back on her legs. Looking around in the dim light, she noted that some of the wall had crumbled a little around the edges of some of the stones. Thinking cap on, she played out in her head just how useful one of those broken off rocks could be. Would it be enough to smash open the rusted metal cuffs? “Rumple… How do you think your bindings would hold up against blunt force damage?” Not that she was terribly strong, but it could be worth a shot if they did it quickly before it drew any attention.
