Rumple's Mother

Enchanted Forest

Searching, the thing that had become Evanna's life, all consuming. She'd thought of nothing else except finding her son ever since she woke up groggy and found Malcolm had taken him. Sure she had been secretly planning to take Rumple and travel back to her family once she had enough money, she thought she'd been so careful to make sure Malcolm wouldn't find out until it was too late. It wasn't as if he was happy or that he even really wanted to be a father, but he hadn't been happy to find out she was going to double-cross him. She worried constantly about how her son was, how Malcolm was treating him. She wanted to believe somewhere deep down that he loved his son, but he loved conning people more, and using their son in the process. She'd followed every lead she came across, but Malcolm had covered his tracks well.

With the last of the money she had nearly gone, she was desperate and found someone who claimed they heard that a man fitting Malcolm's description, along with a boy about Rumple's age, had paid for a magic bean to go to another realm. With the promise that she'd give the man the other half of the gold once he took her to where her son was in the other realm they set off through the portal. She shouldn't have trusted the man, but she'd been so desperate and so hopeful. Once there he led her down a dark alley and then turned on her, it seemed putting her trust in the wrong men was a mistake she was doomed to repeat. She'd done her best to defend herself, but the only magic she'd ever been able to do was healing magic. Her last thoughts as she lay in the alley, beaten and broken, a tear slid down her cheek as she was sure she'd never see her son again.

Then the world faded to darkness.......

She was running through a forest, she could hear her son calling her name, but the sound came from all around her. Every time she would run in one direction, the voice would come from the opposite. She kept trying to call out to him, to yell out that she was coming, that she was there, but no sound escaped her lips. Then a sharp pain cut through her nightmares like a knife, and the forest around her faded.

Her heart beat faster, it hurt to breathe but she imagined the man who beat her had cracked a few ribs on top of some knife wounds. Where was she, how was she alive, a thousand questions filtered through her brain as she tried to relax her breathing so it didn't hurt quite so badly. Her eyes slowly fluttered open, but she didn't recognise where she was, only that she was inside somewhere. She tried to speak but her voice was horse and came out not much louder than a rather squeaky strained whisper.

"H....hello? Is someone there?"

Adam’s life was a solitary one, he liked it that way, he’d chosen it himself. It was much easier that way, it meant he stayed away from the people he’d have to hurt if he fed on them. It also meant that he didn’t have to talk to anyone. He wasn’t good at that anymore, not like he was in his younger years, when he had been alive. Really alive. Even after he had spent most of his childhood living on the streets, he had still been social, he’d been able to make friends. Even if his life had been hard, he’d still been able to make a good life for himself with his big brother. But after he’d met Eve, after she’d turned him into a vampire and brainwashed him into doing everything she told him to, his mind had turned dark, and he found it hard to open up to people. When he actually met people he could talk to, that is. Which wasn’t very often, only when he had to feed. He didn’t like it, but he knew it was necessary.

To make it easier for himself, he only fed on people who were evil, who had hurt others for fun or for their own gain. He didn’t think it made him any better, but it gave him some peace of mind to know that they couldn’t prey on other helpless people any longer. That’s why he had been out that night, looking for some evil person he could feed on, someone who was taking advantage of some poor bugger he could save. It had taken him a while to find someone to feed on, but once he walked past a dark alley where he heard someone getting beaten up. He was almost too late, he could see the poor woman lying there bleeding and broken, but he hurried in there and pulled the man away from her. He pushed the man up against the back wall of the alley and quickly drank all his blood. Once he was done, he let the dead body drop to the ground and quickly turned around to take a look at the woman. To see if there was a chance he could help her. She was injured pretty badly and was losing blood, so he decided to take her home with him, to see if he could help her get better.

It was lucky he had just fed before he picked her up and carried her home, it would have been hard to hold himself back if he hadn’t. He would have done his best if he hadn’t fed, but he wasn’t sure he would have made it home with her if that had been the case. But he made it home with her, put her in his own bed, which was the best in the house, and did the best he could to heal her wounds. He’d never had to do this before, now that he was a vampire he healed quickly if he got injured, but he cleaned her wounds and dressed them. He put a glass of water on the nightstand next to the bed and a pile of clothes he hoped would fit her. Since he was pretty sure she didn’t want to wear her own clothes when she woke up, not when it was covered in blood. Then he left her to sleep for as long as she could, and he went to his living room to read while he waited for her to wake up.

Hours went by as he read, he even finished the first book and began on a new one as he waited. He couldn’t sleep anyway, he knew that. That was another reason he had given the woman his own bed, he knew he wouldn’t need it. He didn’t want to be haunted by nightmares tonight. When he finally heard the woman’s whispered words from upstairs, he hurried up to see her, to make sure she was okay. He knew it was light outside, but it couldn’t be seen from inside his house, he had drawn all his thick, velvet curtains to keep it out. He stopped by the threshold of his bedroom, looking at the woman in his bed, maybe he should have tried to smile at her, but he wasn’t very good at pleasantries anymore.

"Hello… I’m… I’m Adam… You’re badly wounded, so you better stay lying down…" He told her as softly as he could, hoping he didn’t frighten her, since that wouldn’t be good for her.
