Auron was getting used to the way traveling through portals worked here. There was no control, as far as he could tell, when they appeared, and they seemed to take people to random places. He, at least, was used to a bit more control when he was traveling to different worlds, but he supposed not everything would be the same as riding on Sin's back or hoping through doorways. The interesting part seemed to be that the key to returning was finding another portal in the realm they were taken to, as they always led back to Storybrooke.

Well, he supposed he did not have enough evidence to think 'always', as he'd only been through one personally. Still, people who disappeared from here seemed to return, and only new faces were being brought here from their realms. They were not being taken back, but rather gathered here.

It was a curious tale, and one that brought the adventurer out in Auron. He wanted to learn more and, even more importantly, find the hero that was meant to solve this problem. There were plenty of choices in this town, from the obvious to the very unlikely. Whoever it was, Auron wanted to find them, maybe guide them, but definitely guard them.

That was sort of his thing.

For now, though, he was content to walk down the road, not expecting any trouble, nor looking for any. Of course, portals chose their own moments to open up, and he had no sense that one was going to be doing so at the end of the block. He did notice someone nearby, though, glancing their way and nodding casually in greeting. It never hurt to be polite.

Other girls her age, Penelope supposed, would probably vow to be careful when they heard about random portals that took you to anywhere at all. Penny, though, was excited. She'd seen enough of Storybrooke already, she wanted--no she needed something to spark her sense of adventure back to life. Adventure didn't simply come to someone, she had to find it herself. Everything she dreamed of, finding her own destiny, might come true. It hardly mattered that this was the Enchanted Forest, she wasn't too excited to lay eyes on the lake that was the very last thing she laid eyes on before all went dark. Dying was unexpected, something that changed her forever, an adventure she could have done without. Penelope knew that had she not perished, she would be around twenty years old by now. A young woman, not a girl that was frozen in time until recently.

Pulling her boots on and her hair in a simple braid, she set off. She had no weapons to speak of, so she would have to rely on how quickly she could run. It didn't quite fit her vision of not being a damsel in distress, but she hoped that would change soon enough. Soon, she realized that she had no idea what she was looking for in particular.

Didn't adventurers have to start somewhere, though? Something had to yank them from their normal lives, plunging them into excitement and something that made them daring, eager to start the next. Adventurers went on quests, she told herself. Whether it was seeking people to help, or rescuing a loved one. It would be foolish, though, to wish to have a loved one to save when hers were perfectly safe. She would never wish danger on them so she could be the hero. Frowning, she walked on.

Penny suppressed a grumble. Where was an adventure when you needed one?

Bringing herself out of her slight sulking, she caught someone nodding in her direction. Penelope moved a little closer to get a good look, almost doing a double take. Wasn't he from the Underworld as well? Huh. Well, she couldn't blame him from breaking out of the dreary place to a world full of color. Eyeing him for a moment, she nodded back. It couldn't hurt to approach him and ask what he was doing, now that he was alive again. "Hello there. Mind some company?"

Auron had a flash of recognition when he saw the young lady up close, tilting his head at her thoughtfully. He had seen far too many faces in the Underworld to remember them all, but that feeling of familiarity, cold as it was, told him they must have crossed paths down there before. It was not exactly a great place for making friends, though, and Auron always stuck to himself and to his goals.

He had been a bigger stick in the mud than usual, down there. But that was just how he stayed focused.

"I don't mind at all," he said, with a small smile that was a little hard to see considering he liked to wear his collars up. His coat was oddly fashioned around this style decision, and his dark sunglasses likewise made it difficult to know what sort of an expression he was making. He had a sword at his side, having learned the hard way that walking around town without one was never a good idea.

"You're from the Underworld too, right?" he said softly, as he resumed his leisurely pace down the road. He stopped again only after a few feet, feeling a warning rumble under his feet that he had now come to recognized. "Stay close."

He held his hand out to her, though he was sure she would be wondering why at this point. The portal ripped open soon enough, though, and pulled the duo into it violently. He grabbed on to her either way, if she went for his hand or not, just so he did not lose track of her in the fall. He had no idea where they were going or if it would be dangerous, but he was not going to let her go alone. He was Guardian, and it was his duty to defend those that needed it.

Or, in this case, who happened to get pulled into the same portal he did.

Up close, Penelope knew for certain that she had seen his face before. Even during the days when she didn’t feel like herself, just some shadow, she began to remember faces. At some point, she had committed his to memory. An unreadable expression, the sense that while he was living he was not to be trifled with. A hero, maybe. Strong enough to protect. It was a nice thought, but she imagined herself to be more than a damsel in distress. She couldn’t remember if she had ever talked to him, though.

She regretted those years, but then again--he didn't seem to be the friend making type at all. Neither was she back then.

Well, at least he didn’t mind company. Penelope easily fell in step next to him, keeping the pace. “It’s..a nice day, isn’t it?” It was weak, but all she could manage. Her attention was more drawn to his sunglasses, the sword at his hip. If she was still a little girl, having never known the darkness or cold of the Underworld, she would squeal and ask to hold it. She’d pretend to vanquish enemies, a grin on her face. But she would never be foolish now, untrained hands with a weapon in them would lead to trouble or hurting herself.

Her gaze snapped from the weapon back up to the man that owned it, eyes widening slightly. She quickly schooled her expression into a neutral one before looking away. “Yes.” Penelope easily fell in step next to him, keeping the pace. Though, she paused right after Auron did. “…Why?” She nearly missed the rumble, too caught up in trying to come up with the words that would hopefully convince him that she didn’t need protecting. Penny wasn’t able to use a sword like he was probably used to doing, but she was quick and thought herself capable of being able to handle a situation.

Penelope stared at his hand, a laugh threatening to burst out. Who did he think she was? The teenager didn’t have enough time to ask him why, though, as the portal ripped open and pulled the two off of the street. The feeling of excitement was quickly replaced by terror before she was grabbed onto. Although she had an aversion to touch when it wasn’t her mother or brother, she clung to Auron. If he let go, even if she was sure he wouldn’t, who knew where she’d end up?

Don’t let go, she silently pleaded.

They hit the ground. It was hard to tell if they had actually been falling, or if the whole trip happened in a moment that was quickly forgotten. It left his head swimming, as it had before, and his body ached from the impact either way. He was laying on his back, holding on to the girl, who was now on his chest. He had managed to shield her from the fall, at least. His instincts as a protector were better than he thought.

He moved to get up, helping her off of him and standing slowly, looking around. He did not ask her just yet if she was alright, but only because he was sure she was. This was not his first trip through a portal, after all, and he felt he had managed to handle that one pretty well.

And this time, he was actually equipped to defend them.

The area looked vastly different to Storybrooke, and to the other realm he had visited. That one was filled with wild, ancient plants, while this seemed to be some sort of fortress. The walls around them were clearly man made, with ornate carvings and masterful masonry that already looked timeless, despite being relatively new. They seemed to have landed in a small alley between an outer defensive wall and an interior building, which was massive. It offered them protection from being seen, at least, so they had a chance to investigate if this was a dangerous place or not.

Finally, he looked at Penelope, nodding his head toward her as he stood almost leisurely, one hand on the hilt of his oversized, dangerous looking sword.

"Are you alright, miss?" He asked softly, reaching up with his freehand to adjust the dark glasses on his face, and make sure they weren't broken.

Normally any kind of contact was unwelcome to Penelope, but this time she was grateful for the cushioning that Auron provided. If he hadn’t been with her, the landing most likely would have hurt. She was like a doll that would break into a million pieces while he was sturdy and strong. Deep down, though, she felt a little guilty. He may have been stronger than her, but the fall probably did a number on his head. The feeling soon went away, replaced by curiosity about where the portal took them.

On her feet once more, she looked up at him and dug down deep to express her gratitude. “Thank you, that couldn’t have been very comfortable.” The old Penelope would have smiled, eyes shining. But she just nodded to him instead, looking away to see where they were.

What kind of adventure waited for them here?

It seemed way different from Storybrooke or the Enchanted Forest, and Penelope quickly crushed a feeling of fear. A majority of the people in the town were friendly, but there was no way of knowing for sure if the residents here were the same–besides someone attacking them. Auron had his sword and she had no doubt that he could protect her, but she found herself wishing for a weapon of her own. Unable to resist the urge, Penny moved and reached out to run her fingers over the carvings, having to admit that something about them was beautiful. How old were these?

Well, at least no one had spotted them yet. The portal was nice enough to drop them out of sight, though she doubted portals could be nice. They were magical, but they weren’t mischievous or emotional.

Snapping out of it when Auron spoke to her, she looked back over at him. “Yes, I’m alright.” Her eyes went to the sword before she moved her gaze back to him. “Do you think you’ll have to use that?”

Auron did not look too worried about using himself as a cushion for her. he was a guardian, after all, and protecting others at his own expense was sort of what he did. He had died doing that, what, twice already? It was a very hard habit for him to break, and he had no real reason to at this point in time. He was a hero, by nature, so he might as well let his heroic impulses rule the day.

Anyway, what kind of a jerk would he be if he let a kid get hurt?

He glanced at his sword.

"Yes, I do think we will need this. My experience with these portals has not been without fighting. But I am fairly skilled with this blade, so don't worry too much about it. Now."

He motioned to the end of the alley they had landed in. There was flickering light at the end of it, which indicated a street lamp that was fueled by fire rather than the electricity they knew in Storybrooke. He motioned for her to stay behind him, moving to the mouth of the alley and peering out. There were armored guards walking around, patrolling the area. He noticed they looked tense and tired, as if on the job far longer than they should have been.

The whole place looked like a military camp, and these soldiers were on alert for an attack. They may have landed in the middle of a war, which was not really ideal.

If Penelope had to guess, he was used to protecting people. Was that how he perished and found himself in the Underworld? No one had died protecting her. Oh, well. If they lived through this ordeal, she'd have plenty of time to get stronger so she wouldn't need it. Then again, the thought of seeing the Underworld didn't frighten her that much. Only the water did. So far, she hadn't seen any. Falling wasn't as bad as trying to swim.

No matter what, she was glad that she hadn't been completely alone when the portal stole her away. She wouldn't have any idea of where to go or what to do.

Having someone with a sword set her slightly at ease, though she still wished that she had her own. Like this, she was a bit of a burden.

"Well..alright. But I'd feel better if I had a sword of my own." Were the other realms as dangerous as this one? As unpredictable? This was on the track to making her regret wanting an adventure.

Penelope shifted her gaze to where Auron was gesturing, attempting to fight away a sense of foreboding. Even though she stayed behind him as instructed, she couldn't resist peeking around him to get a good look at where they had landed beyond the alley. Growing up in a cabin by the woods, she had never lay eyes on guards with real armor. She didn't seem like a threat but her companion certainly did with his sword. Penny held her tongue, making sure to be as quiet as a mouse.

If there were guards or soldiers, the portal chose a bad time to drop them there. She looked up at Auron, wondering what he would do next. What would become of them.
