It was cold, but Zelena didn't feel the chill.

They were going too fast for that. But she liked it fast - faster and faster and faster until the ground beneath her feet became a blur and trees swept past in flashes of bark and branch. Leaves brushed against the furs draped over her shoulders and then they were gone in an instant as if they hadn't been there at all, losing their grip on her inch by inch as the pair rode wild down forgotten forest paths. Through the trees she saw glimpses of munchkin houses - dirt tracks - chimneys shrouded in shadow - the glimmer of the winding yellow brick road twisting and turning out of sight -

Fine flecks of dirt still speckled her dress, a stray twig caught in her hair from their fall moments before. But Zelena didn't care. The bicycle went over a bump and the rattle of the wheels sent her squealing and laughing and giggling with abandon again as if they hadn't tumbled in a heap at all - or maybe because they had. A thrill of green pulsed down the handlebars then, a rush of emerald racing down through the metal frame.

But that wasn't her. That was the magic, pulling them ever closer to her prey. Where Dorothy was the scarecrow would be too, and with him his precious little brain. Soon Zelena would hold his brain in her hands and she would be one step closer to it all - closer to completing the spell, closer to going back in time and ensuring Regina was never born, closer to taking her rightful place...

But Hades was closer than all of that right now. She had to lean against him just to preserve her precarious side-saddle balance and on either side of her his arms were outstretched as to reach the handlebars, enclosing her on all sides. But the expected urge to escape hadn't come, and Zelena didn't feel trapped. Not when this man had aims that corresponded with her own. Not when she was on the broom with wheels and nothing, nothing, could catch her now. Not when they were too fast for anything but giddy breaths and beating hearts.

Or heart.

It was then that her eyes caught something through the trees up ahead. The witch's eyes widened and she twisted in her seat almost violently. "Wait! Wait! Stop!" Her harsh bark could have been heard for seemingly miles around but it was muffled - cramped with hushed urgency. As the bicycle slowed she strained to see what was ahead, her eyes narrowing as she squinted into the undergrowth. Yes - there! There - there it was...she suddenly became alert and rigid with attention, with all of the instinct of a predator. But predators didn't smile like that as she extended a hand to point towards what she could see up ahead, turning to look at the God behind her. "There's something you need to see - slowly," she added, her voice barely above a whisper. "Get off slowly."

The God of Death was hardly known for being one to have fun – to him it had always seemed like a complete waste of time when there was always more souls to pull down into his domain and play with but the woman in front of him had shifted his priorities. Not by a whole lot but enough so that he could allow this little moment to happen. To anyone else it would seem like a pretty simple thing, to ride a bike, even to him it wasn’t THE most exhilarating pastime in this world, or the Underworld for that matter, but with the laughter that was currently escaping from the Wicked Witch of Oz it was clear to see that she was at least finding it rather pleasant.

Her laugh was contagious because before he even really had time to think of his actions he too was letting out a rather joyful laugh too. Good job none of those souls he liked to torture could see him now….he would ever be seen as terrifying if they witnessed him having such joy on a bike, and what use would he be then if he couldn’t suck any hope out of them?

With each bump the bike bounced over and every excited sound that Zelena vocalized Hades began to wonder what it would have felt like to experience his heart racing with the adrenaline that should have been coursing through him at this moment in time. Hopefully if things went well with the two of them he wouldn’t have to continue imagining it….he would know for real what it would feel like and it would all be down to her. They had developed quite the connection and if the God of Death himself was feeling such intense emotions towards her there was no way, in his mind anyway, that she wasn’t feeling the same for him.

The God had been so lost within both her laughter and his thoughts that her calling out as loud and as sudden as she did almost had him slamming on the brakes so hard they would undoubtedly have flown right off the bicycle. Luckily Hades managed to prevent such a thing from happening, not wanting to hurt any part of the woman who would get his heart beating once again, and when it finally came to a stop he placed both of his feet onto the ground beneath them to balance both them and the bike. ”Word of warning….you should never scare the driver.” His tone was playful and he wasn’t in any way trying to scold her for the abruptness of her actions, to clarify this he placed a gentle kiss onto the crook of her neck before realizing that she was pointing towards something.

”What is it beautiful?” In all honesty he didn’t really want to get off the bike, they had been having so much fun, but with the smile she currently had on her face how could he refuse? So he did just as she had said and very slowly removed himself from the bike so as not to make any sudden noises. His eyes went in the direction she was pointing but as of that moment he was still unsure what he was supposed to be looking at.

If she could Zelena would have been on the bicycle forever. She'd never seen a contraption like this before, nothing more exciting than a horse and cart. But this was something new. It truly was like a broom with wheels - beyond anything they had in Oz and beyond anything she'd ever seen. It made her wonder what other things Hades knew about that she didn't.

To know their little bicycle had been Dorothy's made all the sweeter. She would get the young woman eventually - her and that scarecrow she was harbouring - but did she have to give up fun along for it? A ride with someone who was just like her? Why was she the one to be denied fun when it was handed out on a platter? The witch was feeling reckless tonight with the sure certainty of a kill at the end of the evening and an unexpected ally by her side.

He wasn’t just an ally, though. Hades was someone like her. Someone usurped by a sibling, someone with magic. Someone who hadn’t said a word about her ability. Someone who saw her worth. He was here to help with the time travel spell, but she didn’t understand why he was here, here, riding a bicycle with her when he could be doing God knew what in the Underworld or wherever it was he hung out when he wasn't being nosy. And she didn’t need to know.

For a moment, she could pretend. Have a little - flight of fancy.

But not with what she'd just glimpsed up ahead. Her cry didn't want for attention and the bicycle lurched forward - but she was rescued from falling as Hades righted them both in time. As she recovered her breath Zelena looked down to find her hand on his forearm, thrown there in an instinctual attempt to save herself. She couldn’t even remember doing it. But even as she went to remove her touch from him he spoke, his lips brushing her neck. Surprise registered in her eyes and she hesitated in uncertainty. Nothing came to her as a reply but already the moment was over, walls rose into her eyes and she slid off the saddle.

And she was concentrating. "Hush." Zelena went forward, towards a cluster of trees up ahead. The forest was a labyrinth of these, the old paths tightly snugged between the trees - but there was something different. Amid the walls of so many other trees these trunks were closer than the others, their low hanging branches twisting together to form a drape of leaves and canopies - natural camouflage. But there was something moving beyond, dim shadows cast along the ground in roundish shapes. Once she got close the witch turned and beckoned to the god silently, before turning back and prising apart the curtain of leaves a little further to see through.

It was a glade. Moonlight was pooling here free and unobstructed by shade - it was open to the skies above, an amphitheatre of epic proportions stretching out in all directions. All around its circumference were more natural shrouds of leaves and branches, veils of foliage carefully concealing the grassy knoll that lay within.

And there were horses. Zelena could count seven or so, maybe a few more. Their hooves made gentle beats over the scuffed ground as they nibbled through dew-laden grass, tails flicking restlessly behind them. Shivers ran down their flanks. Soft nickers and whinnies mumbled through the air, along with sniffs and snorts and the toss of manes.

But even as she watched their coats slowly changed. A wash of carmine was splashing down withers, gliding down sides slick with sweat and dripping down to slender fetlocks. Another nearby lost its creamy honeysuckle to a deep, cloying ochre, sweeping up its nose and down its throat. And then another and another, whites and blacks and reds and pinks and purples as the horses grazed. The only thing that didn’t change were their chocolate brown eyes, bright and clear - a standstill in an ocean of shifting bodies moving in coloured tides.

Velvet nostrils flared and a mother and her foal, both an elegant fuchsia, rose their elegant heads to peer at the two visitors with pricked ears, a spark of alarm dappling their coats a bright lemon.

Zelena’s eyes were alight. "Horses of a different colour." Her voice was hushed, careful not to startle the horses. She smiled, wonderstruck, almost to herself. "I didn’t think there were any left." She could barely keep her eyes off them but she dragged her gaze away to look to Hades. "Come on." And she was off, taking his hand without a thought and pulling him with her into the space. "The Scarecrow can wait."

Now Hades had seen an awful lot during his existence, things that the majority of people could only dream about, so as far as he was concerned there was nothing in this realm that would be of any interest to him.....not to the point where he should be taking his focus of the beautiful redhead in front of him anyway; yet here he found himself peering through some of the vegetation that grew in this part of Oz while the woman he wanted to spend time with became far more interested in looking at whatever it was she had spotted hiding behind it.

With a roll of his eyes he was half tempted to just take her hand and lead her away from here, show her that there were far more exciting things to be doing at this moment in time, but as soon as that alluring voice of hers started to sound out once more and he heard the awe and wonder that was radiating from each and every one of her words he just couldn’t find the ability to go through with such a plan. With everything that had happened to her he knew she deserved every snippet of happiness that came her way. If that meant having to watch some boring little animal go about its daily life than so be it. He would do it....for her.

Horses of a different colour may have sounded thrilling to someone else but to him it was just something else preventing the moment where his and Zelena’s lips would meet and his heart would finally start to beat once again. If anything was going to be like a slap to the face for his brother it would be proving him wrong.....he had been so convinced that no one would come to love him for who he was and yet there was something just inches from him who thought just as much of him as he did of her. His eyes began to watch her face closely as the look of excitement radiated from her; if he hadn’t have known any better he could have sworn he almost saw a glow beginning to appear around her.

That was when he found himself being dragged through the foliage, the thin pointed branches digging into the fabric of his coat and threatening to rip it right off him, which on any other day would have achieved nothing more than a good old moan from him but the second his eyes lay upon the very horses she had been talking about his whole demeanour and mood changed completely. ”Wow...” The word had escaped his lips before he even knew it had been there in his mind and all sense of annoyance that he had felt towards these creatures for interrupting his time with Zelena disappeared entirely, as though it had never been there in the first place, as he allowed his hand to slip from hers so that he could carefully walk towards one of the horses.

”I have seen a lot in my time Zelena but these are something else entirely.” Not wanting to frighten off such an incredible sight Hades voice was barely above the level of a whisper as he very slowly reached out a hand and let it rest onto the back of one of the horses. For a brief second it stiffened, almost as though he had frightened it, but once his hand started to glide along its body in a soothing fashion it soon calmed itself and went back to grazing at the grass beneath it. Each colour that ended up adorning its body was as vibrant as the previous one, captivating even, and he simply couldn’t tear his eyes away. ”Cerberus is the only creature I have ever paid any kind of attention to....but the only thing he offers is loyalty. These beautiful creatures they are....they are like nothing I have ever had the honour of seeing before. After centuries of nothing but darkness down in the Underworld this is quite the sight.”

Right now Zelena could have been next to an Emerald City guard, a munchkin or indeed the God of Death and she would be paying each and every one of them the same amount of attention right now: that is to say very, very little. Her cheeks were flushed and she only had eyes for what was ahead, her gaze bright and almost feverish with excitement. Her attention was solely fixed on the horses, on the glimmer of colour she could see between the sage green leaves of the vegetation.

Even Gods had to take a backseat to what she was seeing right now.

So if she was going into the glade he was coming too and Zelena was too distracted to hear any murmurs of dissent even if there were any. They were suddenly bathed in moonlight, free of the trapping canopy of the forest overhead and exposed in the glade's grassy expanse. But the horses didn't bolt, didn't spook in her excitement nor the arrival of the two interlopers. Instead they grazed and nuzzled at one another, still shedding colours all the time like snake skins. She turned around and around, lost in a maze of ever changing hues. They were beautiful - so beautiful...she had to remember to breathe.

And remember that she wasn't alone. The Wicked Witch turned as Hades walked away from her - and stared after him as he went towards the horses. A hushed warning rose in her throat. No! No - he'd scare them away! She stepped forward in panic, her hand already outstretched to pull him back - but the horse didn't so much as lift its head under his hand. Zelena stalled, her hand dropping to her side. She watched him for a moment, her eyes darting from the horse's colour changing coat and back at him. The God of Death didn't exactly conjure images of a tender touch.

Nor the sheer reverence that was almost radiating off him. Zelena could barely hear him, his voice hushed, his eyes caught by the splash of colour cascading down the creature's flanks. Her expression softened. But Cerberus? The Cerberus? Zelena looked at him oddly, a touch of a smile tugging at the corner of her mouth like an insistent child. With his back to her she almost hesitated, unsure for a moment whether he was joking - but only a moment before she spoke. "Three headed dogs aren't known for their beauty." She was surprised Cerberus existed. There were so many myths and legends she could barely detangle the story from the truth, what was real and what was not. There were too many things to detangle, things that could fracture at the slightest sound.

She stepped towards him slowly, careful not to spook the horses. The horse snorted as she approached, flicking an ear restlessly. But Zelena was only looking to Hades, her smile fading with every step until she drew level by him. "How often do you come up here? To the world of the living?" Her fingers found the horse's mane, twisting at the many coloured strands as she looked over to him, concern flitting over her face. He had been the one to discover the bicycle and know how to ride it; he was the one who suggested the enchantment on the bicycle to find Dorothy; but she was face to face with the realisation he wasn't even a part of this world at all. A part of any world.

He shouldn't be here at all, and certainly not stroking horses with the Wicked Witch of the West. Centuries...centuries managing the dead. And centuries more. This wasn't where he ought to be - he was out of place, out of time. He was a prisoner on temporary parole. She didn't bite back her next question. "How long can you stay?" How long can this go on?

Hades' attention was on the creature before him so much that he almost forgot that he was actually here with someone else...that was until he heard the beautiful sound of her voice breaking through his thoughts and his gaze was dragged away from the horse and towards the red headed woman who had won his heart instead. He watched as her fingers delicately made their way into the colourful mane of the horse wishing that they were in his hair instead of the animal's.

Usually anything she said would fill him with the most happiness he had ever felt in the millennia he had been around but this time something felt different.

"I come up here as often as is needed." His answer was pretty straight cut only because he didn't want to think all too much on the fact that he couldn't come up here as much as he wanted to. The restrictions his brother had forced upon him hadn't overly annoyed him until he met Zelena....yes the underworld was hardly the happiest place on this Earth but he had managed to achieve a lot down there, it was his domain, those souls were his and his alone to torment......that was something Zeus could never take away from him. But now he had a pretty damn good reason to want to come up here more often....one that could get his heart beating once more and yet he would eventually have to go back.

Her next question took him completely by surprise, not because of the fact that she had asked it as though she cared for how long he could be here but because it actually saddened him to think that she would be left alone once he did have to go. The features on his face softened as he stayed silent for a moment or two, not really knowing how to answer her question, yet another thing she seemed to be good at....causing him to become speechless. Ha! The God of Death himself with nothing to say. There really was a first for everything.

"I have about twenty-four hours before I have to leave Zelena but...." His hand reached over to hers that had been touching the horse's mane and he soon removed it from the creature so that he could hold it in his own hand. Once he felt the warmth of her fingers around his he looked her in the eyes with a serious look. He'd had a playful air about him so far this evening and this was the first time he didn't have an ounce of fun showing in his sharp eyes. "If I was to find a way to get my heart beating again I could stay here as long as I want. No one and nothing would be able to stop me..." His gaze was intense as he tried hard not to look at the very lips that could achieve such a thing for him. All he wanted was to pull her flush up against him and capture her lips, claim them as his own, but he wouldn't do such a thing unless she expressly gave him permission to.

He cared about her far too much to do such a thing.
