Wonderland

Jefferson had been stuck in Wonderland far too long.

If he stayed any longer in this realm, he feared he might finally lose it. Go completely crackers. Barmy. He’d already lost his head in the literal sense, and well, a couple more days and he’d probably lose his mind too. But he couldn’t afford to do that, he had to hold onto whatever scrap of sanity he had left. For Grace. His oh so beautiful daughter Grace, he couldn’t let her down. He had to go home. ‘Back in time for tea’ was the promise. What kind of father was he if he hadn’t even been able to keep that? So that was why he had to get it to work.

The Hat of course.

But however many hats he made, none created portals. He’d lost count over how many hats he had made now, a hundred? A thousand? And all he could think of was making the next one. As surely he had to get it to work soon right? He had to be missing something. Perhaps it was the wrong material? Or the hats were the wrong size? Shape? Something had to work. He had to get it to work.

“GET IT TO WORK!!!”

He hit himself over the head, consequently screaming in agony and stabbing the nearest hat to him with his scissors. “Call yourself a Hatter” he grumbled at the mess of the desk in front of him. Thinking was no use indoors. He had to concentrate, and so he stood up suddenly causing a small flurry of scrap material to scatter behind him. And after a while of navigating his way through the sea of hats that littered his workshop, nearly tripping over them on multiple occasions, he finally made it to the doorway in one piece. After checking for guards, he ran down the corridor and busted out of the first door he saw. Sighing in relief as sunlight hit him, and instantly fell to his knees.

“Grass…” he breathed, placing his hands onto the ground before crawling forwards to the lake in the middle of the queens grounds on this side of the castle. Dipping his hand in the cool water, he splashed some on his face before sitting up to rub the back of his head. A bump was definitely forming. But it was good to get some fresh air, but he couldn’t afford to relax. He couldn’t waste any more precious seconds that he could be using to find a way out of this realm. “Think think think” he repeatedly mumbled to himself, eyes widening as he looked around almost frantically for anything that might help him in regarding his hat making. As Magic worked differently in other realms, and just absolutely insane in this one.

But he had to get out of his workshop for at least a minute. Even though he did feel guilty not being there, there had to be another way if his hats couldn’t work. He needed to think, a plan, anything. It’s not like portals couldn’t be made in other ways right?

I'm a mermaid. Name's Ariel

'Ariel, you need to stop going to those other worlds. I mean it.'

Ariel hated that her father tried to stop her going to the worlds that weren't Atlantica. It was like ever since their mother died he needed to be overprotective of her and her sisters. She didn't want to be trapped in just the life of a mermaid. While she was ok with the idea of that at first, Ariel was older now, and, she wanted to see so much more then the ocean itself offered.

'ARIEL TRITON! WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU'RE GOING'

“I'm going to see the worlds out there.”

Ariel then swam off before her father could argue with her or make her go home. She knew that he loved to manipulate the current, but, she wasn't going to be trapped any longer. Why would they have made it possible to open portals underwater, if they weren't meant to be used? She wasn't going to be treated like a child any longer. Not a chance.

Even if it was for a few hours, Ariel needed to get away and clear her head. So she swam straight ahead through in front of her in the ocean, and, soon felt the magic of the portal transporting her to whatever land this one was leading her to.

Ariel then rose her head up, and, soon spotted a man sitting by the shore of the ocean, and, she slowly swam her way closer to him, before leaning against a rock. “And I thought I was having a bad day.” Ariel said, giving him a soft smile.

There had to be another way out of this. Somehow.

It wasn’t as if there wasn’t the magic available, it was all just a different kind…crazy magic that simply didn’t want to be put into his hats. At least not properly anyway. And he must have made hundreds of all different kinds of hats by now, and he honestly didn’t think he could take it any longer. Clearly. But he wasn’t about to give up, no, every waking second he had in this realm had to be spent searching for a way home. He couldn’t bear the thought of his daughter waiting for him, only for him to never ever make it back to her. He couldn’t do that to her of all people! She deserved so much better… and that right there was his problem, he should have thought about what she already had. Because now everything they had together was lost. She didn’t deserve this. Orphaned. It was sickeningly cruel, and he hated himself for being ‘tricked’ in such a way to result in him even entering this realm in the first place.

And yet, he hadn’t really been tricked. He simply should have known better. This was still truly his own fault, and he deserved to be punished for that, but Grace didn’t. She needed a father and he couldn’t let her down, especially when she had begged for him to stay with her. He’d promised to hang up his hat for good, and he’d broken that. If there was somehow any way out of this mess, he knew that he could never forgive himself for this. But he had to stop thinking of that right now, since he currently had no way out of Wonderland, other than the hats of course. And they weren’t exactly working. Nothing seemed to get them to work, NOTHING. And yet, he refused to give up, he would find some new ideas and force the damn hats to open a portal for him. Because he would get it to work. He simply had to.

He tore at the grass with his hands almost violently as a woman’s voice interrupted his thoughts. Causing him to spin round in the direction the sound had come from to reveal a woman seemingly quite content being in the water. He’d not seen her arrive exactly, but beings as this was Wonderland she could live in that very spot of water for all he knew. It wouldn’t be the strangest thing here, not that anything here could be considered particularly strange. At least not when everything was crazy anyway. “Hm… bad days are too easy to come by, although I guess I’m not entirely sure of when the days even end or start here” he replied, scooting himself forwards slightly to the edge of the water. It was true though, he could have been here for a matter of hours or years and he wouldn’t really know since…all time sort of crammed into a big long something or other here. It had been long enough though. “So mine’s going splendidly!” referring to said ‘bad day’ of course, his face contorting into an odd sort of a grin as he watched her. This wasn’t really something he intended to joke about, not that his joke probably made any sense to anybody but himself but hey, it wasn’t as if his ‘day’ here was going to get better any time soon.

Ariel wasn't sure what she was going to end up doing this time, but, this place seemed kind of interesting. She remembered her sisters and her father reassuring her that sometimes she just needed to mind her own business, and, a part of her had promised to not explore these worlds as much anymore. But, when she was angry, she needed a place to escape to, where no-one will know her, which is how she had ended up in this place where-ever it was.

Ariel continued to sit there in the ocean as she looked at the man who seemed to be a bit frustrated, but, the poor man seemed a bit desperate, and, broken from the look of it. A part of her really did want to help, but, maybe there were people she just couldn't help as easily. “I know that feel. Never knowing when something starts or ends.” Ariel gave a soft smile as she noticed that he moved closer to the water, and, she just looked at him for a moment. In Atlantica, being trapped in that castle with her father and sisters had made her unsure when one day was after another. “Yours and mine both” Ariel said, with a bit of sarcasm in her voice. “But, then again days can always get worse can't they?” She wasn't sure this was helping, but, she was always one of the people who looked at the positive side of anything.

To never know when something starts or ends? Yup. Exactly.

Although in all honesty, being stuck in Wonderland pretty much seemed like it was going to utterly be his ending, and ironically so. If it hadn’t been for Priscilla, he’d never have made it out the first time he was trapped here. He would either be dead or still sitting at that tea table right now and well, both times completely losing his mind. And did he learn his lesson? Apparently not. And now as a result, his daughter was to be an orphan all because of him…and likely for forever. As how could he possibly get back to her without his hat?

And so he hated himself for that. Hated himself for trusting Regina of all people, and quite literally losing his head. And above all, he hated Wonderland. Ugh. He sighed defeatedly and reached out his hand to touch the surface of the water as he thought. It did make him feel somewhat better to know that this woman felt the same, not that he wished her a bad day or anything. But, well it was nice to not be completely alone on this matter. Although he wasn’t entirely sure how hers could compare to him literally losing everything, and in a sense, he might as well be dead.

But no. He had to find a way back to her right? He wasn’t about to give up, he couldn’t. He couldn’t afford to waste any time not searching for a way back to her.

With that thought, he suddenly jumped to his feet in panic. Looking down at his empty hands as if to find a hat there. Angry with himself for wasting time, his gripped his head in his hands and pulled at his hair in frustration, “Oh yes, they can be so much worse” he replied bluntly. Of course he had had plenty of worse days, his wife dying for example, losing Grace…oh boy, to call them ‘bay days’ was truly an understatement. So this stranger was not wrong in the slightest, not exactly.

He sighed and rubbed his face into his hands, he had to make another hat right? And yet, was there anything he hadn’t tried here? Surely something had to have worked by now…he shook his head, “What’s wrong with your day then?” his tone underlined with sarcasm rather than concern. As did he truly care? Nope. All he could think about was Grace, and nothing seemed to be helping him. It was beginning to seem just completely hopeless, “Or shall I make it worse for you?” he half laughed, although it was strained and he promptly kicked a rock into the lake in front of him in frustration.

Ariel continued to look at the poor man sitting on the beach, wondering what exactly he was waiting for. Or what he was doing out here, humans surprised her most of the time, and, it still confused her seeing them in action. She raised her eyebrows as she looked at the man, and, she just leant her arms on the sand in front of her. “They always can get worse.”

Ariel knew that this was true, she had always realised that life with her father and sisters could always possibly get worse. At least she was still welcome in the home, and, had her family around her. She had had worse days. Losing her mother was probably one of the worst. Those pirates were going to pay one of these days.

She sighed softly and found her hands briefly going to the locket that hung around her neck. One that she shared with her sisters. They were all given one from their mother. Connecting them in the best way possible. Ariel looked at the man, and, just thought for a moment. “I'd answer you. But, it may bore you” Ariel said, giving a soft smile. 'And I don't think you actually care' Ariel felt sorry for this man, and, knew that his story was probably more complicated then hers was. And, if anything she cared about other people when it was necessary. “Why don't we do the opposite and I try and make yours better?” Ariel dodged out of the way as the rock flew towards her in the ocean.
