Rapunzel couldn't believe what was happening, she was the lost princess every always talked about. So, that woman she had... Rapunzel didn't even what to think about that. She had always thought that her 'mother' was keeping her there to protect her. But, it turns out the woman wasn't even her mother, and, she was there because she didn't want her to be found.

A part of her had thought that this whole thing was a dream, and, she would wake up still in that tower, longing to be free. But, when she woke up the next day and she was still in the castle she knew that the whole thing had really happened after all.

Now she had to figure out what her life was supposed to have been. A princess of the village she had been watching from up above for her whole life. Rapunzel also now had two new parents, something that she didn't know what to do with.

Rapunzel had woken up, but, didn't know what to do at this point. So, instead she just decided to take a walk, and, just found herself standing by the edge of the courtyard of the castle, just looking out from the balcony.

"What do you think Pascal? We can handle this right?" Rapunzel said, letting out a soft sigh as she leant against the wall and just stared out.

It had been his wife's idea to take the snowdrop as a personal sigil on the event of their marriage after he'd told her what it meant. Consolation and hope. Consolation, she'd said, for a past that they neither of them could change and hope for a future that was kinder.

The future, just over eighteen years of it, had not been kinder and he'd come to look on the design with a deep ache in his chest and a bitter laugh on his lips for the young man who'd fingered the flowers his wife to be had brought him with an awed smile and a nod of his head. He hadn't used it in years - having never been anywhere without his wife and her royal sun design it had been easy enough to avoid - but that morning his wife had arranged for one of the old enamel rings bearing the design to be left on his plate at breakfast, snowdrops being completely out of season and beyond the reach of even their miracle working gardeners.

She herself had been wearing hair slides decorated with tiny jewelled verbena and he'd got the message. He - himself the person, not her husband the king consort - was to spend time with their daughter (their daughter!) today, or this morning at least, coming alive again after a long, long winter of the spirit and sparing the occasional prayer for her as she carried on as queen. There were... matters to sort out. Understandings that had stood for over a decade to be unravelled, confirmations to be given and royal authority to be enforced.

Rapunzel, it was tacitly agreed, did not need to know that the cousin who was next in line to the throne had relatives who were up in arms, decidedly not happy to hear that he was no longer next in line and openly doubting her story. Karol, as the consort, did not have the authority to do battle with the man or his supporters and so his wife and queen was to go against him while Karol saw to their daughter. It was not ideal, he desperately wanted his wife there as well, but much of their lives were not ideal and so he'd slipped the ring onto his finger, pressed a kiss to her forehead as he squeezed her fingers in silent support, plucked a sprig of flowers from a vase on the table and gone to find their little girl.

She was no baby, to be sure, but to him she still seemed tiny and fragile, as if a breeze could catch her up and carry her away from them again. That when he first saw her she was stood on a balcony gazing at the sky with the wind ruffling through her hair only added to the impression that at any moment she might float away like one of her beloved lanterns and he had to fight the sudden urge to drag her inside and behind doors with guards and locks and never let her out of his sight again. It hadn't helped before. She'd run from just such a situation.

He loved her, but he was a stranger and locking her away to protect her would only ruin whatever chance they had now.

"Rapunzel." He called when he was still some distance behind her, wary of spooking her and intending to follow her lead. He'd been waiting for eighteen years to hold her again and she hadn't known he existed - the tangle of limbs when they'd first hugged aside he wasn't at all sure that she'd be comfortable with him suddenly scooping her up in his arms and he wanted, more than anything, for her to be happy and comfortable. But he found that he couldn't restrain himself entirely, as soon as he was close enough he was reaching for her hand and pressing a kiss to her forehead. She smelt, somehow, of sunshine and growing things, and for a moment he simply stood there drinking in the sight of her before, with a shy smile, he reached up to tuck the flowers behind her ear. "Baby's breath," he told her as he'd once told her mother, "means everlasting love."

He backed out of her personal space a little, although he did not let go of her hand as he cleared his throat. "I thought that we might take a turn of the gardens this morning, while the weather is fine." Not only did he want her away from the council chambers and throne room and any associated shouting but looking at her now he thought that perhaps she might chose the outdoors so long denied her as well. "Your mother plans to join us for lunch. A picnic, on the south lawn."

Hearing the voice of the man she now knew was her dad made her jump slightly, but, she also just gave a smile as she looked at him. Rapunzel had been glad she had been able to hug him, and, her real mother, but, she still didn't know anything about him yet. Rapunzel opened her mouth in surprise as she noticed her father pulling her closer, and, kissing her forehead. It felt nice, and, unlike with that other woman, there was something about it that felt more pure. She gave a soft smile as she felt him put a flower in her hair. “So, is that what this is called?”

Rapunzel raised her eyebrows, and, did feel less pressured when he backed off a bit for the moment. But, the grip on her hand also felt nice. “That sounds ok. I mean I've been cooped up for so long, that fresh air may do me good.” Rapunzel let out a soft sigh as she thought back to that tower, and, being locked inside of it for as long as she had. “I'd like that.”
