Cat in the Hat

Enchanted Forest

Zach had now had some time to adjust to being a cat, hey there were advantages to it after all, and at least he could still talk like normal and not just meow all the time or only communicate with animals. Nope he might be a cursed cat but he could still talk to humans just like he was one, granted some humans had found a talking cat to be slightly unnerving, but that didn't Zach one bit. His first order of business of course had been to track down Jefferson, the man he thought had been his friend, and give him an ear full. Zach was cursed all because of Jefferson after all, well OK not all because of Jefferson. It wasn't as if Zach hadn't gone into the plan knowing full well that if either or both of them were caught it would spell trouble. Nope Zach had agreed to helping Jefferson steal the sorcerer's magic hat and now Zach was paying the price for it while Jefferson had managed to escape.

Zach was even more resourceful as a cat than he'd ever been as a human, and he finally got to travel which was exciting. He sometimes even got to travel to other realms. Sometimes he tagged along with Jefferson, other times he'd try to find a mermaid or a magic bean or some other method. Today was one of the 'other method' days as he went to one of his more favourite realms to visit, though not his very favourite, Wonderland. He liked it there since talking animals were a lot more commonplace so people tended to freak out a bit less. Made it a bit easier getting food since one thing Zach was not really adjusting to was eating like a cat. The thought of eating food raw and having to actually catch it himself just horrified him. Back in the Enchanted Forest he often hit up this nice plump baker quite frequently who always had some nice cooked stews and breads for Zach and saucers of milk.

He had only been to Wonderland a couple of times before and usually with Jefferson, this was his first solo trip there so he decided to explore around a bit more. He even went off the beaten paths a bit since he was smaller and more agile than Jefferson so he could go places that Jefferson hadn't been able to. After an hour of general exploring he hopped up on a very low hanging branch of an old tree, that was probably only a foot or two off the ground and started washing his paws.

we paint white roses red

Oh, Wonderland, her beloved Wonderland, the place where she grew up and still lives today. A tremendously curious place, everything had to be said. And dangerous, and alarming, and frankly the visitors and tourists who came should not stay there for long, because you ended up going completely mad. I know, how can a place as innocent as Wonderland play with your head until it breaks it? Well, she wasn't sure, but too many people ended up getting out of there without a screw. Not everyone could stand that place, for many it was too much, too much in a whole. Even for some who lived there Wonderland sometimes became... exasperating.

Mouse didn't think so at all. She loved Wonderland with all her heart, and even though it could sometimes be... overwhelming, she wouldn't let it bother her. She loved to be there, she loved its peculiar inhabitants and their strange customs. Let us say that no one was in their right mind on that land, but who was really in their right mind? Those who claimed to be sane were usually the ones who were mad, out of their minds. After all, those who said they weren't crazy were really crazy, and those who assumed and assimilated that they were crazy... were crazy, there was no remedy.

But people always said it as a bad thing, they referred to madness as an infection, a disease that had to be stopped. It was true that perhaps not everyone would appreciate having their head and thoughts changed forever, but surely there would be one person in a million who would appreciate Wonderland's effort to achieve that goal. The little mouse smiled for herself as she ran through the branches of the trees. Today had been a day... well, nice for her, so to speak. She had managed to steal some bread, and some bread for her was a lot. Some crumbs could feed her for weeks, so she didn't have anything to complain about.

Oh wait, she did have something to complain about. There was a cat sitting on one of her favourite branches all over the place. Well okay, maybe it wasn't one of her favourite branches, but that cat had to go, right away. She didn't like cats. They had a bad habit of wanting to eat mice. Mousey climbed up to the branch where the cat was licking its paws, and cleared her throat loud enough to be heard. "Excuse me, Mr. Hairball, but this is my branch".

For a moment Zach paused the cleaning of his paw to sniff at the air, but then disinterested in the new scent that had come near him, he went back to washing his paw. That was until a tiny little thing climbed up on the branch he was perched on and started talking to him. For a moment he stopped mid-lick and just looked at the mouse. For a mouse they seemed awfully brave, considering he was larger and a cat. Not that he had any interest in mice like most normal cats would, but still, it wasn't as if the little talking mouse knew that about him. Finally he moved his tongue again giving his paw a couple of more licks before he was satisfied it was groomed properly, then turned his attention to the mouse.

"I don't see a name on it anywhere, or any writing for that matter, you know one normally writes their names on things they own, so they can prove ownership of said things. Are you sure it's this tree and this branch that's yours, trees often look much alike, perhaps you're lost and your tree is somewhere else and this only looks like yours, or perhaps your branch is one of the others on the other side of the tree. Though as you are quite small and do not take up that much room, I see no reason why we couldn't both sit here on this branch." He gave the little mouse an impassive nearly bored look, as he had no interest in mice, even if cats were supposed to, he wasn't a normal cat and refused to eat mice. The thought disgusted him, how much meat could possibly be on the tiny little mouse bodies any way. Seemed like they would be more fur and bones than good meat, and even the thought of uncooked meat made Zach feel as if he might be sick to his stomach.
