Merida pushed the hay that covered the floor of her stone cell around, looking for the small stone she had been using to make hash marks on the wall, a system to count the days of her imprisonment. Today marked day nineteen as she hid the stone again. The edge was getting sharper by the day, so pretty soon Merida was certain she could use it as a knife if she needed too. She knew that making the marks on the wall would eventually end the stone’s usefulness, but she kept at it anyway – it was the only way to keep track of how long she had been there. And with Arthur holding her Whisps, who knew if she’d make it back in time to save her brothers. The sound of armored boots scuffing the stone floor sounded somewhere else in the dungeon, and Merida hurriedly scattered the straw back around to hide her rock. It was the only weapon she had currently, and she wasn’t going to lose it. She stood back up and threw herself at the door, getting ready to fling insults and curses at whichever guard had been tasked in bringing her the daily meal she got down here. Usually just some water, a hunk of crusty bread and some sort of weak, watery soup that made her want to gag.

”BACK FOR MORE?!” She yelled at the top of her lungs, doing what she could to rattle the bars that radiated magic. She could tell, because every time she touched them, they made the hair on her arms stand on end, and that was enough to convince her that they had been enchanted in some way. She reached as far out of the bars as possible, trying to grab hold of her bow that they had foolishly left hanging beside the cell, but just out of reach. She was tempted to start pulling the lacing of her bodice out to make some sort of improvised lasso to get at the weapon, but it still would do nothing in getting her out of the cell. ”Lemme outta here an’ ah’ll best ya in a fair fight! Gimme mah Whisps back an’ ah’ll let ya live!”

As tired as the yelling made her, it always made her feel a little better, not as trapped, not as out of control of what was happening as she was. Merida rattled the bars on the door again as she heard the foot falls coming closer, and finally, she had enough of the cold evenings in the dungeon. ”At least lemme have mah cloak!

Life had not been easy since his wife had died and left him with a daughter to raise all on his own, in a realm that wasn't even technically his home. He'd pretty much entirely lost track of how long he'd been here, at least thirty perhaps, but then with some curse ravaging the lands making time stand still he gave up trying to figure it out.. No matter how much time passed he still felt the loss of his wife sharply, things had finally begun to feel like home. He had a wife he loved, a daughter he adored, but then magic tore his wife from their lives. He felt like he wasn't ever going to get over her, but he had to find a way to forge on for Violet's sake, and Arthur and the other knights needed him as well. He did his best to be happy, to make sure Violet was always happy, even if it felt like his grief ebb and flowed with the tides of life.

For years Hank had followed Arthur, pledged his loyalty to the man before he'd even become king. Lately though Hank was beginning to have a harder time following the king with such blind loyalty. Hank had his own mind after all, he could see things and make his own deductions, and some of the decisions Arthur had been making lately were seeming less and less in the best interest if everyone in the kingdom, some even seemed to go against decency and chivalry themselves. Now on top of raging a war against their neighbours to the north, they had taken a woman captive. Not just any woman either, but the queen, and somehow keeping a queen down in the dungeons just not only felt wrong but also felt like it must break some sort of Geneva Convention. Not that this realm had a Geneva Convention, or a Geneva for that matter. He just felt like someone of royalty shouldn't be kept in a dungeon, didn't the Brits back in his realm keep royalty in some tower or something. His world history wasn't really something he remembered much of when he was in his realm, now he remembered even less.

Hank technically didn't have a shift guarding the prisoners, generally that was something one of the lesser or newer knights did, but his conscious was getting the better of him and he didn't imagine the northerner was being treated all that well. Before he headed down he put some whiskey in a skin, some fresh baked bread and some roasted meat he had managed to wrap and stuff it all in a bag that would be easier to conceal under his cloak. He made a believable excuse to the guard about checking on the prisoner for Arthur, not like they'd check any way so he wasn't worried. The guard mentioned something about the prisoner not being very quiet, Hank just smiled, nodded and headed down into the dungeons. The guard had been right, the queen certainly had a healthy set of lungs. As he walked into view he put on his best and warmest voice he could as he was trying to be kind to her, and didn't want her to think it was a trick.

"My lady, or rather your highness perhaps is the proper term? Not sure if it's the same for you in your kingdom, I'd ask how you're fairing but I'm sorry to say Arthur doesn't seem to think the state of the dungeons is something to concern him. I've brought you some better food, heartier than the stuff I'm sure they've been feeding you........" She looked young, older than his daughter for sure, but if he had to guess not by that much, five or ten years perhaps, she was still young. He paused, what could he possibly say that would convince her he cared about her well-being, just not quite enough to go against his king and set her free of course. "I'm sorry I can't do more, Camelot had been my home for quite awhile now, and Arthur was very good to me when I first ended up here, helped me when I had no one. He's not normally like this, I wish I knew why he's been doing the things he has, but.................." He held out the bundle of food and the whiskey skin for her to take through the bars.

Merida looked the man over, sizing him up, he was the one offering her food and whiskey after all, something he didn’t have to do, but in Arthur’s dungeon, she couldn’t be too careful. Not that she thought that the other royal would poison her – no – she held too much political sway when it came to the politics between the kingdoms, but she wouldn’t put it past one of the guards just to make a troublesome inmate “disappear”. This one didn’t seem like someone that would do that thought. His face was too honest, too… too caring. Trust wasn’t something she was about to give to any of the guards here, but at least this one wasn’t fool enough to try and poke at her with a spear through the bars to back her away to toss a bowl of soggy gruel and stale bread into the cell before letting her come forward.

So the choice was to trust that she wasn’t about to be poisoned, and they had sent the nicest looking guard to be the delivery boy, and eat well for at least one night, or turn her nose up and wait for her gruel again in the morning. The loud growl that came from her stomach finally won. She turned towards the bars and started to move forward, trying to keep herself in the line of sight, so that her marks on the wall wouldn’t be seen – last thing she needed was for him to say something about it and then have any of the guards come in to search the cell and take her stone away.

“Majesty.” She said quietly, drawing close, at least he was being mindful, and had tried. Of course, depending on who asked, she could be Queen, or Chieftain, depending on who was doing the addressing. Not that she cared for it either way, he could call her what he liked because she was, by all means, a prisoner. But, he had tried, which made her feel a little more like he was true in his being there. ”If I was in ma home, it’d be Majesty.” Her throat felt raw from the yelling she had been doing, and so her words had squeaked out a bit more rasping than she had intended. Frowning, she took a few more steps towards the bars, before nodding her head once.

”Yer doin as yer King has commanded, ain’t a fault in tha. But it makes me wonder what yer doin’ here now. Talkin’ ta yer prisoner, and offerin’ more than standard prison fare.” Closer still she drew, until she was at the bars, the enchanted metal making the hairs on her forearms stand on edge again, the weird uneasy feeling of magic as her hand touched one of the bars. Her eyes focused on the bar and skin held out to her, before sliding past them, to the dagger on his belt, the idea in her head immediately, as she looked back up to him, smiling, hand grabbing at the offering as her other hand came through the bars to try and grab his forearm to keep him close enough to grab the weapon.

Hank couldn't imagine keeping a Queen in the dungeons like this, even he knew enough about the history of his own realm to know that once upon a time in the past when Kings and Queens had been a more common thing in his world, royalty had always been treated with a degree of respect, even if they were about to have their heads cut off. Well he supposed that wasn't always true, if the French and Russian revolutions said anything, but the English had their tower of London, a place to put people who weren't the common rabble. He couldn't recall how many kings and queens had met their fates at the end of an executioner's axe. History had never been one of his better subjects, but he knew many had, at least a couple of King Henry's wives. They'd even made a film about it.

"Well then, your Majesty, it's still your title even if you aren't in your kingdom, and it should still carry respect even if my king doesn't seem to agree."
For a moment his guard was down, a few more seconds of paying more attention to the poor girl in the cell and less on the dagger he'd forgotten about in his belt she might have gotten away with her grab for it. He stepped backwards and away from her grasp just in time. The stew sloshed out of the bowl a bit as he did, he sighed and once he was sure he was out of her reach he sighed and shook his head.

"I realise you'd like nothing more than to escape, but I'm afraid I can't oblige so you have a choice, you can eat a decent meal or you can go hungry. Look I'll talk to Arthur again I don't know what good it'll do, but maybe I can at least convince him to better accommodations until everything is sorted. Truth be told i don't belong in this realm, I come from a very different world, I don't even remember falling through the portal, but I woke up not far from here and I owe my life to him. I can't betray him even if I don't agree with how he's treating you."

Merida let out a strangled cry of frustration, head thunking against the bars as he moved out of the way, eyes narrowed on him as she started to take in a deep breath to renew her verbal assault, before he continued in that quiet way of his, and the fight just sort of fell out of her for the moment. She understood the feeling all to well. None of her men would betray her, at least, not the ones that mattered, like Jamie. And she couldn’t be too irritated at Hank, after all, it was like he pointed out, he was there, bringing her more than what she would normally be getting, but the reiteration that he would not be betraying his king made one corner of her mouth finally quirk up into what might have passed as a smile on one of her more annoyed days. After all, if she wasn’t smirking about something, it really was only a half-smile at most points. She finally, patiently held her hand out for the bowl, she couldn’t get any closer to him, not with the bars that made her feel a bit funny keeping her in the cell, but he was right. She wasn’t going to pass by the opportunity for a better meal.

”I can respect that.” She finally voiced, deflated, her brogue died down to nearly nothing, as she focused on trying to be as cordial with the man as possible. He didn’t have to do anything for her, and she knew it. ”And appreciate tha effort yer showin’ on my behalf.” There. She said it, it didn’t make her cheeks sting red any less, nor did it do anything for her pride at the moment, but all those could be repaired later – another time. Once she had time to think of a better escape. After all, the glint of the dagger had been foolish at best. They would have sent someone in to take it back from her eventually, far before she’d be able to try and pick the lock with it – if she even thought she would have been able to do that – which she didn’t. But it would have been nice to not feel quiet as powerless, helpless in the cell she was in.

As she went back over his words, something caught her attention finally. ”You’re not originally from this realm then?” She didn’t wait for an answer. ”Where did you come from then? How different was it? Merida knew that realm travel was possible, knew that better than most, but she hadn’t come across many in the past that could, so the thought of finding someone else who could intrigued her greatly. She needed to know more, and besides – Hank had a pleasing voice, almost like he could spin a good tale that she could wonder over later when he left, especially after he left and she’d be back to just staring at the wall, making up stories in her own mind to try and pass the time away.
