Charlie had been thinking a lot lately about her life, and now that school was about to be out for Christmas break she had time to think about things even more. It was great though, she had both Dean and Sam back in her life, even Cass even though she hadn't really known the angel very well back in their own realm. He was nice though, quirky and a bit naive but any friend of the Winchesters was a friend of hers. Having the Winchesters around was like having her family back, since they were the closest she'd had to a family outside of her sick mother who passed a way a couple of years before she left for Oz. It all got her thinking more and more about how she'd been spending her time in Storybrooke. Not that there was anything wrong with how she was spending it. She had great friends and a great job, but where her job was concerned teaching had never been where she'd imagined her life to go.

Now, in all fairness, she'd gotten to the point with her life a long time ago that she hadn't really thought about big life-long aspirations. Mostly she thought about getting through each day, never looking much further ahead into the future outside of the general survival instincts. She'd been in Storybrooke awhile now though, ever since the curse brought everyone back to Storybrooke, some being there for the first time like herself. Her arrival hadn't been much fun since she spent the first couple of weeks as a flying monkey, but eventually she settled in quite nicely. Now she was beginning to think about things she'd never been able to think about, future things, responsible adult things, roots and connections. The more she thought about it, the more she realised as much as she loved teaching it wasn't really what she wanted to do with the rest of her life. She loved gaming though and computers, and she suddenly got the craziest idea. What if she were to run a gaming store, but not just to sell things, it would have a gaming room for people who wanted to play on computers and even a room for people who wanted to play table-top roleplay games.

Thing was, she didn't really want to take it all on by her lonesome. Sure she'd been saving up money for awhile now, not with any particular goal in mind, but it wasn't as if there were tons of things to go wild and spend one's money on in Storybrooke. She then got the idea, that perhaps there was someone she could ask. She'd gotten to know Eli Wallace reasonably well from working at the school with him and Nick. She had to say she found Eli a lot more fun to hang out with, not that Nick was a bad guy, but he was all serious and older and a bit boring. With the idea fresh in her mind she immediately headed out of the computer lab and down to see if Eli was around grading papers for Nick. She popped her head in.

"Hey Eli, you around?!"

<p>Charlie wasn't really that excited about Valentine's Day this year, the last Valentine's day she had spent in Storybrooke had been with Willow and that felt like another lifetime ago now. It had been one of their last really good dates before things got messy between them. Charlie figured she shouldn't have been entirely surprised, Willow was her longest relationship with someone in basically her entire life. It wasn't as if she hadn't wanted relationships, but her life had always been on the go, and the moving constantly was hardly conducive to serious relationships. Then of course there had been Dorothy briefly, but then between her commitment issues and all the crazy that went down with Zelena, well that hadn't ended very well either.

<p>For weeks after her and Willow had opted to be 'on a break' it felt like they'd both done a pretty good job at avoiding each other, so when Willow was heard to have fallen through a portal Charlie hadn't even realised it for a few days. She kept wondering, hoping even, that Willow would be back like other people who fell into portals and eventually found their way back to Storybrooke within hours or a few days. She wanted to apologise for everything that had gone wrong, for not being more understanding for the nightmares Willow had been suffering, just for everything really. Days turned to weeks turned to months and eventually Charlie just really hoped that perhaps Willow had found the right portal, the one that would take her back to their realm, to Willow's home. It wasn't as if Charlie could go chasing after her, with all the different realms and no way to intentionally make portals, one had to just get lucky. So Charlie stayed, and just kept trying to convince herself that wherever Willow was, she was happy and safe, because to think anything else would have driven Charlie quite mad.

<p>Finally instead of just moping about in her pyjamas all day she decided to at least check out the carnival. There of course were all the dopey happy couples all around, but she tried to just smile and ignore them all. Relationships were overrated, she'd spent most of her life single, what did any of it really matter. She had both Sam and Dean around now, the only family she really had, and that was a good thing. Valentine's Day was for all love after all wasn't it, that included family and friend love, even if it felt like the holiday was more for the couples. She stopped at the funny little booth called red string of fate. Seemed stupid, but she was bored and she figured what could it hurt to see if her fate was somewhere in the Carnival, since if it was outside the Carnival it would just lead her to the exist, an outcome she anticipated.

<p>She followed it and sure enough, there was the exit. She stopped at the exit, wishing she could keep following the string, but knowing the magic for it just wouldn't work once she took a few more steps outside the Carnival boundaries. With a sigh and a scrunch of her nose, she turned slowly to head back into the carnival.

Finally, it was the weekend, no more bratty hormonal teenagers for a full two days. Not that Charlie didn't like her job, she totally did, she got to work with the internet and computers after all. A lot of the teenagers already knew about computers, but some were new to this realm and just learning, but she always felt like it was easier to teach kids about techy things than adults who were slightly more stuck in their ways than kids were. Of course it didn't stop her from trying to help anyone that asked for techy advice or that were just curious about her laptop when she was at Granny's Diner on it. Charlie checked her watch, she had gotten done with things a bit later than she planned, she thought she'd have been able to leave right at the 3pm bell, but it was now nearly 7pm and she was supposed to meet Anna at the Rabbit Hole at 8pm. She did some quick maths in her head as she debated if she had time to run home first, decided she did if she was fast. She had already showered that morning, and she wasn't one for over doing the night out preparations. She really just needed a quick change of clothes from her stuffy teacher clothes and to leave her bag and laptop and such at home.

She was looking forward to having a proper girl's night out with Anna, ever since Charlie's favourite pirate friend had started showing interest in the slightly airy red head, Charlie had been seeing less and less of Hook. She was happy for him though, she knew that ever since things with Emma had ended he hadn't had the easiest time with dating, especially since the man's first love had been killed in front of him. As much as Hook had been her friend first, she wanted to have a friendship with Anna as well that would go beyond just 'that girl her best friend is dating.' Anna was cool in her own right, and if the girl weren't straight and possibly dating her best friend, Charlie definitely would have been hitting on Anna hard. Of course sometimes she did hit on Anna for the lolz, but that was all harmless fun.

Once she was home and had left her stuff and changed, Charlie made a bee line for the Rabbit Hole. Gah, she couldn't remember the last time she had a girl's night with a friend. There had been that girl she was dating for nearly a year, but that had ended and it just wasn't the same. Girl's night with your girl friend, just was so different than girl's night with a girl that was your friend. Less pressure perhaps, less drama maybe. Anna was a bit on the naive side at times, and Charlie was eager to really show Anna all that a world like Storybrooke was in had to offer, which since Charlie had spent a year in the Enchanted Forest, she could attest that Storybrooke was nothing like where Anna was from.

Finally Charlie walked into the Rabbit Hole and went over to the bar, glancing around as she went to see if she could find Anna. It was 8:05pm, not bad, only five minutes late.

<p>Years, it had been years since Charlie had left the note for Sam and Dean at the bunker, the rather vague note about finding a book about portals and realms and places she might find answers to the dark magic of the mark of Cain for Dean. She hadn't wanted them to worry about her after all, or think she'd just run off on them without word, problem was she'd only planned to be gone days or maybe weeks, months at the absolute most, but now it had been years. She wasn't really even sure how long since she heard that sometimes time did move a bit differently between the realms. It felt like maybe four years or so, but what if four years travelling between Oz to the Enchanted Forest and then to Storybrooke had been decades in Mysterious Islands. Sure that probably wasn't quite the case, especially since she had met people from her realm, even if she hadn't known them before Storybrooke, events described seemed to suggest things ran mostly the same as far as time.

<p>She had never stayed in one place this long before, always on the go, always on the run from either the government or monsters. Sam and Dean were really the only two people she'd remained close to over the last ten or fifteen or so years. They'd saved her life after all, and she'd helped them with the problem of those demons that were fattening people up to eat them. They were more than friends though, not that she'd said as much to them, she wasn't always good with the feelsy talks. Still, in her mind Sam and Dean were her family, her brothers in arms, her compadres. She missed them, she hoped they were OK and not dead. When she was in Oz and had been helping Zelena, she had visions of their dead bodies, of failing her friends, and she still had nightmares about it from time to time.

<p>Things lately hadn't been that great for Charlie, since her girlfriend of over ten months had broken up with her. Charlie wasn't used to being broken up with, usually she was the one leaving, moving on, since she never stayed in one place long prior to Storybrooke, it certainly had her rather bummed. She decided that some pie and milkshakes at Granny's would do the trick. She adjusted her laptop bag and placed her order with the waitress as she went over and took her usual corner booth, the one that had the best access to an outlet and then she opened up her laptop. She wasn't paying too much attention to everyone else in the diner today, she was just sulking in the pain of the break up and waiting for her pie while she booted up.

<p>Charlie was still recovering a bit from the crazy zombie attacks that had been going on for the last few months, at least so far there had been only one major attack by them all together and organised, the one in March. Thing was, between those attacks and the crazy nightmares her girlfriend Willow had been having all year, she felt like she hadn't had a proper night's sleep without worry or anxiety in ages. Storybrooke had its fair share of crazy over the last few years, but zombie attacks was taking things to all new levels. As far as she knew no one had died yet, well besides that poor bloke who crossed the line sometime in early April and found out the hard way the line had been cursed, yet again. It was one thing not being able to get back into Storybrooke easily because of the protection spells, but to not be able to leave, that was cray cray.

<p>Things had died down slightly since the major attacks in March, they were back again to the occasional wandering zombies, or small groups. Bit easier to manage. Now that it was summer Charlie didn't have teaching, though she did have some things to take care of at the school's computer lab, things that were harder to get done or address while school was in session. Major upgrades, cleaning and the like. When she wasn't busy doing that, she spent more time at the Occult shop where Willow worked, or taking freelance jobs around town fixing other people's computers if needed, things she didn't have time for during the school year.

<p>It was weird at times, she never imagined she'd be a teacher let alone settled down in one place for so long. It was never the life she had dreamt for herself, since getting stuck in Storybrooke after the second curse, it was the life she had managed to build for herself the last few years in this quaint little crazy town. Though she did worry from time to time what was happening with her friends back home in her own realm, but until she could find a way to get back to them, there was little use dwelling.

<p>She had spent all morning getting some things updated at the computer lab, she was tired now and hungry so she decided to take her laptop to Granny's at her usual table, that had the best access to an electrical outlet, and chill with some pie and milkshakes and work on a new character for her online Dungeons and Dragons group. She had music going on her iPod, but she only had one of the earbuds actually in at the moment so when the waitress came over with her shake and pie and fries, she'd notice. The music was up loud enough that anyone close to her at the table could probably hear it playing in the background, coming out of the loose earbud hanging down.
