It was cold, but Zelena didn't feel the chill.

They were going too fast for that. But she liked it fast - faster and faster and faster until the ground beneath her feet became a blur and trees swept past in flashes of bark and branch. Leaves brushed against the furs draped over her shoulders and then they were gone in an instant as if they hadn't been there at all, losing their grip on her inch by inch as the pair rode wild down forgotten forest paths. Through the trees she saw glimpses of munchkin houses - dirt tracks - chimneys shrouded in shadow - the glimmer of the winding yellow brick road twisting and turning out of sight -

Fine flecks of dirt still speckled her dress, a stray twig caught in her hair from their fall moments before. But Zelena didn't care. The bicycle went over a bump and the rattle of the wheels sent her squealing and laughing and giggling with abandon again as if they hadn't tumbled in a heap at all - or maybe because they had. A thrill of green pulsed down the handlebars then, a rush of emerald racing down through the metal frame.

But that wasn't her. That was the magic, pulling them ever closer to her prey. Where Dorothy was the scarecrow would be too, and with him his precious little brain. Soon Zelena would hold his brain in her hands and she would be one step closer to it all - closer to completing the spell, closer to going back in time and ensuring Regina was never born, closer to taking her rightful place...

But Hades was closer than all of that right now. She had to lean against him just to preserve her precarious side-saddle balance and on either side of her his arms were outstretched as to reach the handlebars, enclosing her on all sides. But the expected urge to escape hadn't come, and Zelena didn't feel trapped. Not when this man had aims that corresponded with her own. Not when she was on the broom with wheels and nothing, nothing, could catch her now. Not when they were too fast for anything but giddy breaths and beating hearts.

Or heart.

It was then that her eyes caught something through the trees up ahead. The witch's eyes widened and she twisted in her seat almost violently. "Wait! Wait! Stop!" Her harsh bark could have been heard for seemingly miles around but it was muffled - cramped with hushed urgency. As the bicycle slowed she strained to see what was ahead, her eyes narrowing as she squinted into the undergrowth. Yes - there! There - there it was...she suddenly became alert and rigid with attention, with all of the instinct of a predator. But predators didn't smile like that as she extended a hand to point towards what she could see up ahead, turning to look at the God behind her. "There's something you need to see - slowly," she added, her voice barely above a whisper. "Get off slowly."

The God of Death was hardly known for being one to have fun – to him it had always seemed like a complete waste of time when there was always more souls to pull down into his domain and play with but the woman in front of him had shifted his priorities. Not by a whole lot but enough so that he could allow this little moment to happen. To anyone else it would seem like a pretty simple thing, to ride a bike, even to him it wasn’t THE most exhilarating pastime in this world, or the Underworld for that matter, but with the laughter that was currently escaping from the Wicked Witch of Oz it was clear to see that she was at least finding it rather pleasant.

Her laugh was contagious because before he even really had time to think of his actions he too was letting out a rather joyful laugh too. Good job none of those souls he liked to torture could see him now….he would ever be seen as terrifying if they witnessed him having such joy on a bike, and what use would he be then if he couldn’t suck any hope out of them?

With each bump the bike bounced over and every excited sound that Zelena vocalized Hades began to wonder what it would have felt like to experience his heart racing with the adrenaline that should have been coursing through him at this moment in time. Hopefully if things went well with the two of them he wouldn’t have to continue imagining it….he would know for real what it would feel like and it would all be down to her. They had developed quite the connection and if the God of Death himself was feeling such intense emotions towards her there was no way, in his mind anyway, that she wasn’t feeling the same for him.

The God had been so lost within both her laughter and his thoughts that her calling out as loud and as sudden as she did almost had him slamming on the brakes so hard they would undoubtedly have flown right off the bicycle. Luckily Hades managed to prevent such a thing from happening, not wanting to hurt any part of the woman who would get his heart beating once again, and when it finally came to a stop he placed both of his feet onto the ground beneath them to balance both them and the bike. ”Word of warning….you should never scare the driver.” His tone was playful and he wasn’t in any way trying to scold her for the abruptness of her actions, to clarify this he placed a gentle kiss onto the crook of her neck before realizing that she was pointing towards something.

”What is it beautiful?” In all honesty he didn’t really want to get off the bike, they had been having so much fun, but with the smile she currently had on her face how could he refuse? So he did just as she had said and very slowly removed himself from the bike so as not to make any sudden noises. His eyes went in the direction she was pointing but as of that moment he was still unsure what he was supposed to be looking at.

If she could Zelena would have been on the bicycle forever. She'd never seen a contraption like this before, nothing more exciting than a horse and cart. But this was something new. It truly was like a broom with wheels - beyond anything they had in Oz and beyond anything she'd ever seen. It made her wonder what other things Hades knew about that she didn't.

To know their little bicycle had been Dorothy's made all the sweeter. She would get the young woman eventually - her and that scarecrow she was harbouring - but did she have to give up fun along for it? A ride with someone who was just like her? Why was she the one to be denied fun when it was handed out on a platter? The witch was feeling reckless tonight with the sure certainty of a kill at the end of the evening and an unexpected ally by her side.

He wasn’t just an ally, though. Hades was someone like her. Someone usurped by a sibling, someone with magic. Someone who hadn’t said a word about her ability. Someone who saw her worth. He was here to help with the time travel spell, but she didn’t understand why he was here, here, riding a bicycle with her when he could be doing God knew what in the Underworld or wherever it was he hung out when he wasn't being nosy. And she didn’t need to know.

For a moment, she could pretend. Have a little - flight of fancy.

But not with what she'd just glimpsed up ahead. Her cry didn't want for attention and the bicycle lurched forward - but she was rescued from falling as Hades righted them both in time. As she recovered her breath Zelena looked down to find her hand on his forearm, thrown there in an instinctual attempt to save herself. She couldn’t even remember doing it. But even as she went to remove her touch from him he spoke, his lips brushing her neck. Surprise registered in her eyes and she hesitated in uncertainty. Nothing came to her as a reply but already the moment was over, walls rose into her eyes and she slid off the saddle.

And she was concentrating. "Hush." Zelena went forward, towards a cluster of trees up ahead. The forest was a labyrinth of these, the old paths tightly snugged between the trees - but there was something different. Amid the walls of so many other trees these trunks were closer than the others, their low hanging branches twisting together to form a drape of leaves and canopies - natural camouflage. But there was something moving beyond, dim shadows cast along the ground in roundish shapes. Once she got close the witch turned and beckoned to the god silently, before turning back and prising apart the curtain of leaves a little further to see through.

It was a glade. Moonlight was pooling here free and unobstructed by shade - it was open to the skies above, an amphitheatre of epic proportions stretching out in all directions. All around its circumference were more natural shrouds of leaves and branches, veils of foliage carefully concealing the grassy knoll that lay within.

And there were horses. Zelena could count seven or so, maybe a few more. Their hooves made gentle beats over the scuffed ground as they nibbled through dew-laden grass, tails flicking restlessly behind them. Shivers ran down their flanks. Soft nickers and whinnies mumbled through the air, along with sniffs and snorts and the toss of manes.

But even as she watched their coats slowly changed. A wash of carmine was splashing down withers, gliding down sides slick with sweat and dripping down to slender fetlocks. Another nearby lost its creamy honeysuckle to a deep, cloying ochre, sweeping up its nose and down its throat. And then another and another, whites and blacks and reds and pinks and purples as the horses grazed. The only thing that didn’t change were their chocolate brown eyes, bright and clear - a standstill in an ocean of shifting bodies moving in coloured tides.

Velvet nostrils flared and a mother and her foal, both an elegant fuchsia, rose their elegant heads to peer at the two visitors with pricked ears, a spark of alarm dappling their coats a bright lemon.

Zelena’s eyes were alight. "Horses of a different colour." Her voice was hushed, careful not to startle the horses. She smiled, wonderstruck, almost to herself. "I didn’t think there were any left." She could barely keep her eyes off them but she dragged her gaze away to look to Hades. "Come on." And she was off, taking his hand without a thought and pulling him with her into the space. "The Scarecrow can wait."

Now Hades had seen an awful lot during his existence, things that the majority of people could only dream about, so as far as he was concerned there was nothing in this realm that would be of any interest to him.....not to the point where he should be taking his focus of the beautiful redhead in front of him anyway; yet here he found himself peering through some of the vegetation that grew in this part of Oz while the woman he wanted to spend time with became far more interested in looking at whatever it was she had spotted hiding behind it.

With a roll of his eyes he was half tempted to just take her hand and lead her away from here, show her that there were far more exciting things to be doing at this moment in time, but as soon as that alluring voice of hers started to sound out once more and he heard the awe and wonder that was radiating from each and every one of her words he just couldn’t find the ability to go through with such a plan. With everything that had happened to her he knew she deserved every snippet of happiness that came her way. If that meant having to watch some boring little animal go about its daily life than so be it. He would do it....for her.

Horses of a different colour may have sounded thrilling to someone else but to him it was just something else preventing the moment where his and Zelena’s lips would meet and his heart would finally start to beat once again. If anything was going to be like a slap to the face for his brother it would be proving him wrong.....he had been so convinced that no one would come to love him for who he was and yet there was something just inches from him who thought just as much of him as he did of her. His eyes began to watch her face closely as the look of excitement radiated from her; if he hadn’t have known any better he could have sworn he almost saw a glow beginning to appear around her.

That was when he found himself being dragged through the foliage, the thin pointed branches digging into the fabric of his coat and threatening to rip it right off him, which on any other day would have achieved nothing more than a good old moan from him but the second his eyes lay upon the very horses she had been talking about his whole demeanour and mood changed completely. ”Wow...” The word had escaped his lips before he even knew it had been there in his mind and all sense of annoyance that he had felt towards these creatures for interrupting his time with Zelena disappeared entirely, as though it had never been there in the first place, as he allowed his hand to slip from hers so that he could carefully walk towards one of the horses.

”I have seen a lot in my time Zelena but these are something else entirely.” Not wanting to frighten off such an incredible sight Hades voice was barely above the level of a whisper as he very slowly reached out a hand and let it rest onto the back of one of the horses. For a brief second it stiffened, almost as though he had frightened it, but once his hand started to glide along its body in a soothing fashion it soon calmed itself and went back to grazing at the grass beneath it. Each colour that ended up adorning its body was as vibrant as the previous one, captivating even, and he simply couldn’t tear his eyes away. ”Cerberus is the only creature I have ever paid any kind of attention to....but the only thing he offers is loyalty. These beautiful creatures they are....they are like nothing I have ever had the honour of seeing before. After centuries of nothing but darkness down in the Underworld this is quite the sight.”

Right now Zelena could have been next to an Emerald City guard, a munchkin or indeed the God of Death and she would be paying each and every one of them the same amount of attention right now: that is to say very, very little. Her cheeks were flushed and she only had eyes for what was ahead, her gaze bright and almost feverish with excitement. Her attention was solely fixed on the horses, on the glimmer of colour she could see between the sage green leaves of the vegetation.

Even Gods had to take a backseat to what she was seeing right now.

So if she was going into the glade he was coming too and Zelena was too distracted to hear any murmurs of dissent even if there were any. They were suddenly bathed in moonlight, free of the trapping canopy of the forest overhead and exposed in the glade's grassy expanse. But the horses didn't bolt, didn't spook in her excitement nor the arrival of the two interlopers. Instead they grazed and nuzzled at one another, still shedding colours all the time like snake skins. She turned around and around, lost in a maze of ever changing hues. They were beautiful - so beautiful...she had to remember to breathe.

And remember that she wasn't alone. The Wicked Witch turned as Hades walked away from her - and stared after him as he went towards the horses. A hushed warning rose in her throat. No! No - he'd scare them away! She stepped forward in panic, her hand already outstretched to pull him back - but the horse didn't so much as lift its head under his hand. Zelena stalled, her hand dropping to her side. She watched him for a moment, her eyes darting from the horse's colour changing coat and back at him. The God of Death didn't exactly conjure images of a tender touch.

Nor the sheer reverence that was almost radiating off him. Zelena could barely hear him, his voice hushed, his eyes caught by the splash of colour cascading down the creature's flanks. Her expression softened. But Cerberus? The Cerberus? Zelena looked at him oddly, a touch of a smile tugging at the corner of her mouth like an insistent child. With his back to her she almost hesitated, unsure for a moment whether he was joking - but only a moment before she spoke. "Three headed dogs aren't known for their beauty." She was surprised Cerberus existed. There were so many myths and legends she could barely detangle the story from the truth, what was real and what was not. There were too many things to detangle, things that could fracture at the slightest sound.

She stepped towards him slowly, careful not to spook the horses. The horse snorted as she approached, flicking an ear restlessly. But Zelena was only looking to Hades, her smile fading with every step until she drew level by him. "How often do you come up here? To the world of the living?" Her fingers found the horse's mane, twisting at the many coloured strands as she looked over to him, concern flitting over her face. He had been the one to discover the bicycle and know how to ride it; he was the one who suggested the enchantment on the bicycle to find Dorothy; but she was face to face with the realisation he wasn't even a part of this world at all. A part of any world.

He shouldn't be here at all, and certainly not stroking horses with the Wicked Witch of the West. Centuries...centuries managing the dead. And centuries more. This wasn't where he ought to be - he was out of place, out of time. He was a prisoner on temporary parole. She didn't bite back her next question. "How long can you stay?" How long can this go on?

Hades' attention was on the creature before him so much that he almost forgot that he was actually here with someone else...that was until he heard the beautiful sound of her voice breaking through his thoughts and his gaze was dragged away from the horse and towards the red headed woman who had won his heart instead. He watched as her fingers delicately made their way into the colourful mane of the horse wishing that they were in his hair instead of the animal's.

Usually anything she said would fill him with the most happiness he had ever felt in the millennia he had been around but this time something felt different.

"I come up here as often as is needed." His answer was pretty straight cut only because he didn't want to think all too much on the fact that he couldn't come up here as much as he wanted to. The restrictions his brother had forced upon him hadn't overly annoyed him until he met Zelena....yes the underworld was hardly the happiest place on this Earth but he had managed to achieve a lot down there, it was his domain, those souls were his and his alone to torment......that was something Zeus could never take away from him. But now he had a pretty damn good reason to want to come up here more often....one that could get his heart beating once more and yet he would eventually have to go back.

Her next question took him completely by surprise, not because of the fact that she had asked it as though she cared for how long he could be here but because it actually saddened him to think that she would be left alone once he did have to go. The features on his face softened as he stayed silent for a moment or two, not really knowing how to answer her question, yet another thing she seemed to be good at....causing him to become speechless. Ha! The God of Death himself with nothing to say. There really was a first for everything.

"I have about twenty-four hours before I have to leave Zelena but...." His hand reached over to hers that had been touching the horse's mane and he soon removed it from the creature so that he could hold it in his own hand. Once he felt the warmth of her fingers around his he looked her in the eyes with a serious look. He'd had a playful air about him so far this evening and this was the first time he didn't have an ounce of fun showing in his sharp eyes. "If I was to find a way to get my heart beating again I could stay here as long as I want. No one and nothing would be able to stop me..." His gaze was intense as he tried hard not to look at the very lips that could achieve such a thing for him. All he wanted was to pull her flush up against him and capture her lips, claim them as his own, but he wouldn't do such a thing unless she expressly gave him permission to.

He cared about her far too much to do such a thing.

It was easy to forget. Hades' very nature was self assured - effortless with the elegance that came from being immortal. He had poise, an assurance in the very tread of his gait that seemed to suggest anything but the truth.

Nobly born to say the least, that confidence...he was everything Zelena was not, but that surge of jealousy didn't come. It couldn't, and it wasn't jealousy that made the witch's eyes follow that of the God's anyway. What she was feeling wasn't jealousy at all.

As often as was needed. That was a clinical answer. And it would be. Death was clinical - messy, but still surgical, still...detached. Severed. He'd never been as free as her and never would be, given he'd need true love. And Zelena herself wasn't free at all, bound to events from before she was born. Needed for what? Needed for whatever duties occupied the God of Death...but she had the distinct feeling stroking colour changing horses didn't usually come under that. Her eyes flitted to the mare, to the wave of pink flooding over its flanks like a blush.

She'd sent plenty of Ozians to their deaths without a glance before now. Someone insulted her, someone irritated her, someone so much as looked her way on a bad day - all sent to their deaths, one after another. What had Hades said? Panache. Panache or not they still died. Not many, but enough to warrant the name of wicked. What the God of Death would need to do up here she didn't know. Deal with the passage of souls into the Underworld, those stupid enough to cheat for immortality...but it was that moment Zelena realised she would kill every munchkin in Oz if that gave Hades a reason to return.

The question was whether he'd take it.

Or if - or if she'd overstepped the line. The witch stiffened. Nothing from Hades. Panic coiled in her gut. Still nothing. It was a snippet of time but it seemed far longer and she averted her gaze, suddenly aware of the chink in her armour she'd just exposed, a moment of sudden vulnerability that she hadn't meant to show. She didn't see his expression; she only felt the pained one that crossed her own features as her lips pursed, the walls rose and her eyes focused solely on the horse's mane, her fingers twisting between the strands. Stupid, stupid -

Her heart skipped a beat at his touch, as he said her name, but just as quickly her face fell. "Only a day." She shook her head, tone bitter, resigned. "Why am I not surprised?" It would never...could never...she swallowed. But he wasn't done yet. She looked up at him, startled blue eyes meeting his. A confused frown crossed her features, uncomprehending - or not daring to. Twenty four hours and this would all be over. They had only just met! Hades had said it himself: no one loved her. She couldn't just assume he - he felt anything, even as he held her on the bicycle, as she had led him here to the glade...even now, when she was looking into his eyes and she could become lost within those dark pools. She couldn't assume anything - not interest in the Wicked Witch, the woman with green skin because life hadn't gone her way.

But oh, how she wanted to. His heart. Of course. "You'd need true love first," she scoffed, before she frowned. He'd only spoken about - about ruling Mount Olympus...? "But you could go anywhere. Anywhere in the realms...your home..." She dared to draw closer, their breath clouding together in the gloom. She had to savour him while she had him, remember every detail about the man she was falling for. It didn't matter about tomorrow....she could make believe for a moment. Just a fragile moment in time. "You'd - you'd need true love. But if no one could stop you..." She squeezed his hand in hers, suddenly realising she was terrified of what his reply might be. "Stop you....from...?"

She was close…..so very close to him that he found his breath catching in his throat; luckily the God of Death was able to collect himself enough to stop anything audible come from his lips. Zelena had no idea how she truly made him feel but he wasn’t the most reliable of people, normally he only ever thought of himself, and yet this beautiful redhead….the woman whose breath was currently cruising over the skin of his face, making all those tiny hairs stand on end, was making him think of someone else entirely.

He would happily hand over all his power, his immortality even, if it meant that he could spend every waking minute with her.

Hades had been about to respond to her, tell her everything, but there was something niggling right at the back of his mind….that irritating little part of him that wanted to be selfish. He wanted more souls, more power, and he wanted to make that blasted brother of his pay for his betrayal. He couldn’t have that if he allowed himself to become distracted….to fall in love. Villains never got their happy endings anyway so what would be the point in wasting time trying to achieve one?

He had to step away from her, widen that gap between them once more, because if he’d have allowed her to stand so close that her very scent continued to fill his nostrils he wasn’t entirely sure he would be able to control himself. With a clearing of his throat he did just that and tore his intense gaze away from those intoxicating hues of hers – the ones he found himself drowning inside of each and every time he looked into them. For the love of all that was dead why did she have to make this so bloody difficult?!

”Zelena….” Talking wasn’t something that Hades often found difficult, given half the chance he would do nothing else but talk yet words seemed to be escaping him right now. A huge part of him wanted to feel her lips embracing his, their tongues exploring the other’s mouth and taking in every bit of their taste, he yearned to feel his heart beat once more…..but he had to push her away. Revenge was so very important to him. His brother had cast him out for no good reason and was now living it up while he struggled to keep his own domain from falling into ruin completely……he couldn’t allow that to continue. ”…..thank you.” It wasn’t going down quite the same route as he had pictured in his mind but as soon as those two words escaped his lips he knew it was the right thing to say.

”You will never understand just what it is you have done for me, the wonders you have shown me, and by that I mean far more than just your colourful realm, and I truly do wish that I could stay but my thirst for revenge is consuming me and I fear you will be caught in the crossfire my love.” He hated this, loathed it in fact, he just wanted to unleash all the passion he felt for her, all the love he held inside that was only for her, capture those enchanting red lips of hers in his…..his fists began to clench at either side of him as he tried to control the anger beginning to bubble up inside of him. Damn his brother!

Oh, she should have known better.

He stepped back and Zelena knew without being told. The answer was no - no in his words, no as he looked away, no in the gulf between them. Her hand dropped, hurt stinging in her eyes as the electricity between them sparked and died. Some part of her had wanted - needed - to try to follow Hades, to follow the idea, the notion, the impossibility that more could happen tonight. She wasn't even sure what that might've been. But she'd only set herself up for failure. Of course. Bloody bias of the universe, at it again.

Zelena didn’t flinch from it. “It’s not going to happen, is it?” Now or ever. She herself was only on the first ingredient of the spell so she couldn't believe him, not completely. Maybe she could believe that it was only revenge that parted them. But some part of her wanted to find a fault, anything. She was scared of admitting this was anything more, even when her heart leapt when he said her name, that sheer depth of feeling that rushed over her for him and him alone. And what he said....years of being told she couldn't possibly be loved couldn't go away in an day. Was she secretly - relieved? For a moment the terror of the unknown had become too much.

She hated herself for it, the crossfire of her own making.

Zelena exhaled, her hands running down her clothes. "You've got a vendetta. So have I." Regina. Still ruining her life from afar. She started to convince herself - beginning to rationalise. He was here for the spell. Of course he was. "I want to tear my sister limb from limb just for being born. And Zeus needs to pay." Her voice twisted. "There's no time for anything else. Even if I just wanted..." She trailed off, glancing away. Just wanted to feel his arms around her? Just wanted to feel his lips on hers? Just wanted to drag him back to the Emerald City and never let him go?

Just wanted what?

The gulf between them yawned, a chasm. Suddenly she was glad it was dark. Her heart raced fast enough for both of them when she looked at the striking man with her, a shiver running down her spine at his voice. Words of affection caught in her throat. But reality was crashing in on her now. Asking him to stay! If she hadn't said anything maybe she would still be dizzily close to him, still trying not to look at his lips, still teetering on the edge of control. Just a mortal falling for a god, far too completely. She had only known him for a matter of hours...she had never felt so conflicted.

But anger was coming off Hades in waves. The witch took a step forward, eyes lingering at his clenched fists. "Hades?" She hadn't seen him angry before, but a mere flicker of fury before in her chambers, when he mentioned Zeus. She closed the distance by another step. "What is it?" She couldn’t apologise; she’d needed to try, to reach out to him. Even now, there she was - reaching out again and again, the Wicked Witch to the God of Death. Two lonely souls. His possible wrath didn’t even cross her mind.

"I can still find the Scarecrow,” she offered. Was that why he was angry? Lost time? Like he said, his thirst for revenge? "I just - it sounds silly - I used to look for the horses as a girl. After my father fell asleep." She was talking quickly. Too quickly. "It was freezing. I - I didn't have a coat. They never came. I just - ” She shrugged, trying hard to pass it off as nothing. “Wanted. To see them." And to ask...just ask. But Zelena looked across at him, trying to reassure him. "I can still get the Scarecrow’s brain. We still have time." Time to bury her mistake.

It didn’t matter how hard the wicked witch stood before him tried to hide the emotion in her eyes because he had seen it in that split second after his actions and now the sadness that had enveloped them would remain engrained into his mind forever. He wasn’t exactly known for being one of feeling, one to care about the petty life forms around him, but Zelena had always been so very different. She was the only other living thing (besides himself of course) that he gave two damns about and he had hurt her.

Yet another reason to add onto the list of why he needed to make his brother pay….and it wouldn’t be nice and quick either. When he got his hands on the interfering bastard he was going to make sure that it was slow and it was the most pain he had ever experienced. His fists continued to clench at either side of his body as more thoughts of his brother crossed his mind, the vein in his temple throbbing so hard it looked fit to burst, and the infamous blue fire was beginning to take the place of his hair…..but then a heart-breaking sound broke through his anger and he knew he couldn’t ignore it.

Almost as though his hatred had taken him to a completely different plane of existence he found himself being pulled back down to the current situation and once his senses were back in working order properly his eyes fell upon the beautiful red-head that he would so willingly give his heart to. The words she spoke were fast, panic-induced almost, and if his heart had been working he was pretty sure it would have been beating at an alarming rate due to the fear he currently felt for her.

”My darling…” Although his hands had been the first to move away from her just moments ago they were now back on her in an attempt to soothe whatever worries she currently had. ”…sssh….I’m sorry. I never meant for my words to upset you. I am merely trying to keep you safe from the fight I will be walking into with my brother.” They were Gods which meant that if their fight was to get out of control this entire world could be at risk, they were capable of destroying anything that had ever been created, the last person he would want at ground zero during all that is the woman he loved.

He placed a single hand onto her cheek as the other wrapped itself around one of her hands and he brought her in so close that their foreheads touched. This mere action alone was enough to make his very breath catch in his throat as her glorious scent invaded his nostrils. ”I know that this spell is important but I need you to remember, whatever happens between my brother and I, that YOU are what truly matters to me. Never, not even for the smallest of seconds, think otherwise. I may be the God of Death but that doesn’t mean I can’t love…..and I love you.”

Zelena had always laughed at love at first sight. The idea of falling in love with someone on the first day of knowing them - it was ridiculous, it was unrealistic to the extreme. But she had never known her emotions could ever be so strong for someone she'd just met. His story, his ambition...the way he treated her; this was different from her feelings for Rumple, the girlish crush she'd had on her tutor a world away. But she was still inexperienced, and it showed. For a moment she'd let her heart wonder, further and further away from reality. He probably said his pretty words to every woman he encountered. Probably took them for bicycle rides too. Her mind flitted to these other women, phantom figures who must look like Regina - dark haired, brown eyed, royal and secure and got what they wanted in love...not letting their daydreams get out of hand. They all knew what a bicycle was.

It was the smallest thing.

But she had the spell to create; she had to take down her sister; she had to gather her ingredients; the witch had to do a hundred other things before inviting Hades into her inner sanctum. And this was just a reminder, she rationalised furiously. A reminder of bigger things - more important things. And all that ambition meant he was now angry, thanks to her, and now she just had to get over it as quickly as possible. She could shove the Scarecrow on top of her mistake - backtrack until there was no trace of that little foray into unknown territory. They could pretend it never happened. The redhead didn't appease anyone, but she offered something near to it now.

A proposal he didn't take. He was close to her again, taking her hands and making this so much more difficult. "No, I understand." Her stomach churned as she looked at him. "We have agendas. I know that." Yesterday she would've snapped at any man who tried to protect her that she could protect herself, and turned him into a flying monkey to prove it. That was who the Wicked Witch was. But the Wicked Witch wasn't here, was she? "I'll be fine," she said mechanically. "You win your war. You have to. You can't let Zeus get away with what he's done." If Hades won. What if he didn't? Could Gods die?

And Hades pulled her towards him and suddenly everything was moving quickly. Something melted inside her at their closeness, as his breath, so easily detected at their proximity, caught just like hers - and at his words, words spoken so genuinely even her cynical mind had to pause. They struck a chord so deeply Zelena leant into his touch without a second's thought, even now struggling to untangle herself from her feelings when being so close was the most natural thing in the world. "You think you love me." She knew better. "I'm so sure what I think," she admitted, "And then I'm not." She wasn't ready for this. She looked into his eyes and struggled for words as she pulled away, but still holding his hands in hers. "I'm difficult to love, Hades." Impossible to love. "I don't think you know that. How can you be sure? How do you know? After just a day? You heart can't beat." Teach me how. It was like she was the one with a stopped heart. What could he see that she couldn't...if he saw anything at all? Still the doubt lingered. It always would.

"Stay with me. Not - not for forever," she said hurriedly. "Just for now. We can watch the horses. We don't have to think about anything. Forget I said anything." How she felt. His feelings were all too clear. "Just the horses, my.." She hesitated. "My hellish one."

”My sweet Zelena…..I don’t think I am in love with you. I know that I am.” The God continued to hold her as close as he could as though feeling her body underneath his touch was the most important thing in the world to him right now. ”Yes I know I have never experienced love before but that does not mean I am completely oblivious to when I am experiencing it.” It wasn’t a soppy kind of love like the one that blasted Snow and Charming had for one another but it was a love all the same. His was a lot more fierce and despite her obvious reservations he would do anything he was capable of to keep her in his life.

Her words almost seemed to hold a desperation to them as she spoke and had his heart been beating it probably would have broken in that moment. She was normally such a strong and powerful woman so to hear such a vulnerability to her voice was saddening for him. ”I will stay here with you for as long as I can. That I can promise. But eventually I will have to leave. It will not be permanently though, it will never be, because I don’t see myself being able to stay away from you for long.” It was a foreign sensation for him, to want to be around someone as much as he did her, but it was a welcoming one and so he wasn’t about to give up on it anytime soon.

Getting his heart beating again would be one sure fire way of proving his arrogant brother wrong.

He moved away from her now but only so he could trail a hand of his down her arm until it came into contact with her hand and he interlocked his fingers with hers. ”Come. Let’s spend some more time with these beautiful horses of yours…although….” A smirk begins to creep up onto his lips as he starts to walk towards a spot underneath a tree near to where the horses were stood. ”…I can think of something much more beautiful to be looking at. In fact I think I could stare at this beauty for the rest of time if I was able to." Once he had reached the spot he’d laid his eyes on Hades sat himself down, his back leaning up against the trunk of the tree, before gently pulling Zelena down besides him.

His arm drapes itself over her shoulders before he closes the gap between them until he feels her leaning against his body. If he could freeze them in this moment of time he would…..there was no doubt about it.

She’d the whole cycle now - jealousy, inadequacy, doubt, fear, anxiety...warring with every emotion she could possibly feel. She was tired. She loved Hades - hopelessly, utterly, completely, but she held herself back. Why did she have to be like this? Over and over and over again...and yet Zelena leant into the god, breathed him in, kept him close. His touch soothed her, settled the froth and fray of her emotions. It felt so right. He felt so right. And so did the rumble of his voice as she stood there, shivering a little in the cold.

She looked up. “You’ve never...been in love?” Maybe...maybe there weren't other women. Just her, too jealous to see the truth. It was like he'd read her mind. If he could, Hades would see all of the indecision - the love, too, the yearning he stirred in her. Part of Zelena feared he couldn't see that she was falling in love too, that this wasn't all one sided. It raged furiously inside of her; a wild animal pacing in a cage. "I'm new to this too," she admitted. "I've never felt like this before."

She'd never have guessed he didn't know love. As for her...he'd give the same response, but nothing could prove the god's love, she knew. Not to her. She'd dismiss everything. Asking for proof was impossible because the witch had to choose to believe in him - if she didn't choose to, nothing would ever happen however hard he tried. This had to be two-way. She had to trust in him, had to suspend her disbelief and trust he'd come back - fight her instincts, if for a fragile second. And maybe she could, before he was taken from her.

"Then I'll watch out for you." She plastered on a brave smile. "I’ll send the odd munchkin." It didn't occur to her for a moment they shared a love strong enough to get his heart beating again...in future, she'd doubt their love existed at all. This was the nature of their beast; maybe it would always be like this, stolen little moments in time. There wasn't any point kicking and screaming about it.

She'd do that in private.

"Come visit me. Oz is always open to you." She put on a good face. "Always. Doesn't matter how long it takes." It did, but she could hardly command him back here - for once this was someone she couldn't, and wouldn't, control. Maybe their future would be like that - peppered here and there. It didn’t sound so bad. They were locked into their own private wars but they could still have parole. Perhaps, although she was unaware of it, it was a good thing. Something fully red blooded, an intense permanent relationship, would be too much - right here, right now.

She'd been anxious to move on - to cover up for a heavy-handed attempt to almost seduce the god into staying. Such had been her desperation. But now Zelena went where she was led, a sly smile emerging at his words. Flirting. She felt...lighter, like a weight had been lifted. They could save the monologuing. "I wonder who that could be," she said, pretending to think about it. "I really have no idea." She followed Hades, swinging his arm as they went past the coloured haze of the horses, and flashed him a coy smirk. "Lucky you're immortal then, aren't you?"

When they reached the tree she took off her hat, letting her red hair flow free as she slipped under his arm. The witch hummed and looked out to the horses, feeling the rise and fall of his chest. It was something she could get used to. "I've finally worked out what men are for," she said teasingly, "Cushions." Against trees, against the elements. She slipped off her heels, her legs and bare feet coiling around his, her dress pooling over both of them. She looked down as if taken utterly by surprise. "Oh," she breathed. She gave him a playful look, a hint of the Wicked Witch in her eyes. "Look who I've caught in my clutches."
