It was not your fault but mine, tag Ruby/Kitty, Past

A parent's love wasn't something Ruby knew too much about, of course, Granny had loved her, but it hadn't been in the same way her father did. But Ruby had never thought of herself as perfect, and she knew that neither Granny nor Anita had thought of her that way. Granny had always wanted her to only be human, while Anita had only wanted her to be a wolf. No one had ever told her she was perfect just the way she was before and she almost couldn't believe that he thought so much of her. But, of course, he knew nothing of what had happened between her and Anita. She couldn't imagine he would think very highly of her when he knew what she had done, especially if he still loved her mother. He would probably hate her.
"But you don't even know what I've done. You know I ate my boyfriend and killed a lot of the villagers, and I hate myself for that, but you'll probably hate me for what I did after that." She didn't know if he would even want to keep hugging her after she told him what she had done, so she took a little step back, preparing herself for his inevitable negative reaction. She had loved the hug and the gentle way he had moved her hair from her face, but she didn't think she would be getting any more of that now, she just had to get used to that thought. "I killed my mother... It wasn't intentional, she was going to kill my best friend, Snow, the first person to ever accept me as both human and wolf. At first, she wanted me to kill Snow, but when I refused she said she would do it herself, but I couldn't let her do that. I just couldn't. I had to stop her, I didn't mean to hurt her, but she ended up impaled on a spike. I killed her, but I didn't mean to... please don't hate me..."

It wasn't Callum's first time hearing stories of wolves who had killed people, both unintentionally and intentionally. Although it hurt him and bothered him that Widow Lucas hadn't properly prepared her for the change, and how much he wished he could just go back and do everything different so he could protect Maeven from the pain, he wasn't phased by her words. He still didn't see her as a monster, if anything it was Widow Lucas who had been the monster for not preparing Maeven properly for what was inevitable. Had she been prepared, especially since Widow Lucas knew full well what to expect, Maeven might have accepted the wolf earlier and not been dangerous to the villagers. His gaze didn't flinch however, he looked at her with love with a touch of sadness at himself for not having been able to protect her or raise her properly to accept both parts of herself, the wolf and the human.
"Maeven, there is only one person to blame for that and it's not you. Widow Lucas knew what to expect, knows what it means to be both wolf and human, she should have prepared you. I realise it feels like your fault, and saying it's not won't make the guilt feel any less of a burden, though I wish there was something I could to do take it away for you...." There wasn't of course, perhaps with magic, but magic's price he was sure would be too high to warrant using it. It wasn't until the next thing she said that really set him on edge, that made his fists clench and his jaw tighten. Anita. He wasn't angry at Maeven, he was angry at his ex for putting their daughter in that position. Part of him didn't even want to believe what he was hearing, after all he'd sacrificed for her to have be raised by Widow Lucas, who then essentially did a shit job at it to the point he was quite confident he could have done a better one, and now finding out that after finally being reunited with her mother all that happened.
He paced around a couple of times, feeling pent up anger for a woman dead and gone brewing inside of him. What was the point though, she was dead but Maeven was alive, he was alive, and that was what really mattered.
"I am so sorry she put you through that, I wanted to protect you from her. I'd wanted so much to be a family with her, but she chose the pack over you, over me, over our family." He moved to Maeven and put his arm around her. He failed her twice in his mind, first when he gave her up to be raised by Widow Lucas, and again when he hadn't been there to protect her from her mother. If only it had been him who had found Maeven back then, not Anita, things maybe wouldn't be as they were now. "I do not hate you, I could never hate you. Anita hasn't meant much to me for a very long time, but you Maeven, you still mean the world to me, and I will make damn sure no one ever hurts you again as long as I draw breath."
