Keeping a routine was healthy, it was something that was meant to make a life stress free. At least, Erik felt that walking through the streets of Hyperion Heights was a far more beneficial solution to sleepless nights inside his coffee shop. After being confined indoors all day serving hot drinks to the various faces of Seattle, it always felt nice to leave for a while. Anyway, fresh air was meant to be good for you after all – although how fresh and healthy the air of a city truly could be was somewhat…debatable. All the same, being outside able to stretch his legs and shake off the irritations from the day was very much a needed habit.

Not that he’d be this fond of walking about in such a vague fashion in broad day light, he found a comfort in the cover of night. He might put it to the emptiness, the silence after the bustle of the day. However, in a city this simply could not be the case and sometimes he wondered why he didn’t just serve coffee all through the night as well. He was up most nights anyway, and it wasn’t as if he had much else better to do. Although people at these hours tended to be less sociable, which usually made them more tolerable in that respect (perfect). He didn’t mind people’s chatter at him during the day, of course, he was meant to be a service of sorts he guessed and when people buy a drink that often included the freedom to talk at you. A friendliness that he just didn’t care for on most occasions, unless there was something interesting to be said of course. A rarity that never usually happened.

The man headed down the stairs from his flat back into his now clean and tidied café, pulling his long charcoal coat over his shoulders and tying a scarf around his neck as he headed over to the entrance of his shop. Checking that the doors sign was turned to show ‘closed’ from the outside before heading out himself, ensuring to lock the door once he’d slammed the frame shut behind him. He stood still for a moment and sucked in a deep breath, watching a light flicker on and off from across the street for a moment while cursing to himself about how someone ought to get that fixed, scratching the back of his head before beginning to walk away from his shop in a gentle huff.

No one believes in love at first sight until that special someone comes along and

steals your heart

"Oh heavens, where did the time go?" The woman mused to herself as she turnes off the lights of the library, rushing to put on her coat, scarf, and her hat. Her dark hair fell at her shoulders as she knelt to the table, lifting her tall stack of books and slinging her purse over her shoulder as best she could. The woman closed the door in a rather clumsy fashion as she attempted to hold her keyes in her hands all the while balancing her novels as best as she could. It was a bit of a clambering disaray as the keys jingled about, and she felt the handle to find the lock. It took several tries, but the librarian finally managed to make it work. She turned the key sideways to lock up, then slowly removed it as she gave a breathe of relief that it went without too much of a hitch.

She was ready for a day off to enjoy her books.

While Minnie loved her job, it could at times be rather vexing. People seldom held the same love and respect for the texts that she did, so it left her frustrated when people left the library books laying about or stuff where ever. Perhaps it was overly critical or she was simply a control freak, but she knew what she liked and what she didnt even if she wasnt overly outspoken with her grievences. She usually just sighed, and fixed it herself to save on breath and a losing arguement. You couldnt always make people care-- especially when it came to material objects.

She walked down the street, her arms filled with her books attempting to put some in her bag to aleviate some of the weight in her arms. Of course, there was very little room, and she didnt plan to simply shove them in and risk damage. She managed a few, leaving a respectable amount in her arms. However, the arranging left her attention lacking as she bumped into a tall gentleman. She let out a soft grunt as the hard covers bumped her in the stomach, her eyes immediately at attention now and her cheeks flushed pink," Im so sorry! I was uhm.." She looked at the books then back to the gentleman," Well, I suppose it doesnt matter what I was doing, but that I wasnt watching where I was going. I apologize for that," The woman remarked, a timid nature overtaking her as she wished she could hide.

Seeing the man in the street lights left her nearly breathless (and not from the blow to gut via books). He was... beautiful. While handsome seemed easy to say, it was his eyes that first caught her. They were alone the most beautiful she'd ever seen, and it made her feel all the more flustered and tongue tied in the moment. She somewhat hoped he'd nod and move on just so she could sulk away and feel less awkward, but another part thought to a more romantic novela scenerio of the two laughing it off and letting the conversation flow organically and igniting a chemistry.

But those things only happened in books, right?

The noise that came out of Erik once the stranger had bumped into him was nothing more than an annoyed sort of a hiss, the sort that might come out of a cat should its tail be stepped on. A fine line to dangerous. The man immediately took a step backwards in disgust, before reaching to smooth down his coat and readjust his scarf. Not that there had actually been any damage done to the item of clothing, but being walked into by a moving pile of books wasn’t exactly the most pleasant of experiences. Yet, he straightened himself up quickly to stand taller, tilting his head slightly to observe the woman as she came into focus.

“Careful, dear” he grunted, his words being spoken in more of a cool hostility than offering actual advice. There was nothing even the slightest bit friendly about his stance, at least, with his day of work now being over, there was no reason to even attempt to be ‘pleasant’. It wasn’t as if she was a paying customer at his shop, even then his efforts were strained. Anyway, he had no care to interact with anyone at this time. He was used to being alone, during his night walks the silence, the empty was what he actually enjoyed.

This woman had disrupted that.

Although to be fair, he clearly hadn’t being paying enough attention to his surroundings either so it would be difficult to place the entirety of the blame on her. Of course however…he wasn’t about to correct her.

To her excuse and further apology, the man gave a curt nod and frowned faintly in response to the woman’s…excuse? Right. He perhaps could have also apologised. That seemed to be what people did when such things happened, laugh, leave, and go about your business. Those were the rules. Something which clearly wasn’t being followed through here, anyways, the woman had apologised. Great. His gaze flickered back to the path he had been following previous, although it was currently being blocked by this book carrier. He had to admit, she had been carrying an awful load of books in her arms, and perhaps another man might have offered to help carry them? In all honesty, he actually considered the idea - wow!

He paused a moment while he mulled over such a thought, after all, he wasn’t exactly a cruel man. He didn’t particularly ‘enjoy’ people that much, they were difficult, and irritating. Still, a walk was what he had intended to achieve from leaving the café, he quite wanted to continue doing so. His gaze came back to watch the stranger, realising that the stranger was still standing in front of him and let out an irritable huff. She looked almost as if she was too scared, and her eyes watching his own? He shifted uncomfortably for a moment and as his own locked onto hers he nearly smiled, however, such an emotion was fleeting and barely made its appearance onto his lips. Instead, he snapped, ”Well?” his eyes narrowed to fleet down to the pile of books, “Don’t you have somewhere to be?” he couldn’t understand why she hadn’t just left, it wasn’t as if they knew each other.

There was a mostly unspoken irritation emitting from the man that had made her sink down internally as she moved the books uncomfortably in her grip. She felt like they were the only wall she build at the moment as a rush of insecurity overtook her. She didnt want to talk. She simply bit her bottom lip and held her tongue as she pulled her gaze away from his the moment that he locked on hers. She kept her blue eyes to the pavement and nodded, a red, flustered expression as she pressed on past the man as he side stepped," Yes.. Y-yes, of course," The woman nodded, dinally working out something to say. That seemed simple enough.

She felt silly, and honestly rather embarassed for staring, but he'd seemed too perfect to be real. Of course, it was too perfect in the moment before he carried on as a grouch of a man. He clearly did not want her prescense, and she was not one to enjoy uncomfortable unwanted situations. She didnt mind talking to others, in fact, she could find a peaked interest in others if they had ideas to share.. However, she kept most of her interactions with those of the fictional characters she read about. It was easier. You just read from a page, and it was as if you were watching the interactions in your mind.

No rejection. No uneasy fear. You simply hoped for out comes, but if it didnt end as you planned, at least there was the solace in the fact their was no real reprocussions. She had an uneasiness when it came to trust, because of her father leaving.. it made it easy for Minnie to scurry away from the confrontation.

As she rushed, however, she felt her hands slip nervously dropping the books just as she walked around him. She stood a moment, a look of dread and defeat as she took several breathes.she collected herself before she began collecting her books. She just had.. horrible luck (mixed with her need to take home and read everything) weighing her down. She bit back her own flustered irritation, only letting a few choice words slip amongst her mumbles. She checked each book, dusting it off meticulously," Oh. This was a first edition.." She murmured, sighing through saddened eyes as she carefully tried to make more room in her bag to make carrying them easier yet.

The man frowned, the woman’s gaze seemed intent on watching the floor, before suddenly all in a fluster she scurried away from him. A soft sigh escaped him, amused by her actions because really, he hadn’t intended to scare the woman. While he might not be a man of many friends, nor a care to acquire such people, he didn’t think that he was cruel. At least, he might be a little abrupt at times, it wasn’t exactly news to people that he wasn’t fond of them, it was tiring. Especially after a day of playing the whole 'customer service' act, because of course naturally he still ran his coffee shop. And well too he hoped, he took his little business seriously, and so of course he needed to get along with people. Or appear to.

However, right now his expression probably wasn’t brimming with kindness either, but all the same, despite finding amusement in the way the stranger hurried away from him, and of course feeling satisfied that he could then return to his lonesome… he couldn’t help but feel almost confused by it.

Of course, then she had to go and drop her books.

He could have laughed, or perhaps even snapped at her. Really, being surrounded by a dozen fallen books while their owner seemed to dance around picking them up could only put a strain on his patience. He stood still, his gaze flickering back to the broken light across the street and huffed in annoyance.

Splendid.

A beat passed before he eventually sucked in a breath, tilting his gaze to watch the woman as she sadly held one of her books. He could so easily have then turned and walked away, hell, this wasn’t his problem to deal with. But apparently something in his gut forced, him, Mr. Erik Black to stay. “Here, let me” he managed to state, his tone was still cool as if his efforts were being forced through gritted teeth and yet, slowly he moved to kneel down against the concrete and began collecting some of the books in his own arms next to the brunette.

Nodding apologetically, “You’ll only drop them again” he added as he noted how little space there actually was in her bag to hold them all. Realising how abrupt he was possibly sounding, he snapped his jaw shut to keep silent for a moment while he arranged a small pile of books, his gaze taking time to read each title in fascination before holding the pile to his chest, supported with one arm and moved to stand back up on his feet. With one hand he patted down his coat gently before narrowing his eyes briefly once more at the stranger. Musing gently with a hum, “These all for a spot of ‘light’ reading I presume?” he smirked and raised an eyebrow in his amusement.

Minnie remained silent as she gathered her things, doing her best to ignore the burning gaze she could feel on her. She didn't understand why he didn't just.. walk away? He was so content with his own irritable personality and his solace.. fine. She could comprehend that for some odd reason someone would harbor that much irritation. However, She didn't understand why he was intent on watching her struggle. It only flustered.. and slowly began to frustrate the woman. It was just.. rude. While a part of her wanted to simply tell the man there was nothing to see, and to move on.. She kept her nose down, and continued with the task at hand. She wasn't going to let one rude person completely ruin her night. Besides, She had Charles Dickenson and William Shakespeare to keep her company.

She froze a bit as he spoke, reaching down and picking up her copy of 'Le Livre de la Cité des Dames' by Christine de Pizan. "Thank you.." She muttered, releasing it gently as the tall woman stood, her eyes catching his only for a moment. She was careful now, keeping her eyes busy as she looked to the books instead," I would've never forgave myself ruining the literary binding of Christine Dr Pizan," While Minnie held a great deal of pride and independence, even if she wasn't incredibly assertive, She never would have said no when it came to keeping the books protected.. And perhaps for now they were safest in the hands of someone else..

Even if that someone was a particularly rude, and vexingly handsome stranger..

"You're.. likely correct.." The woman remarked, a subtly begrudging tone that she hadn't initially intended, but couldn't help. She took a a few breathes as she finally worked up the courage to just look the man in the eye again. He was only human, after all. She could hear an apologetic tone that set her at ease, offering a small smile in place of the frustration," I.. appreciate it," She replied, her tone calm but firm.

She couldn't help but chuckle a bit," Most are for reading, yes. That is the primary function," She mused jokingly, a soft laugh escaping," But as much as I do adore reading, I also tend to them at home. I try to catalog them all and keep them in good condition so that anyone can enjoy them. Sometimes, I run out of time at the library, so I take them home to finish. I'm a bit of a busybody, and a night owl," She admitted. She never did anything halfway, even when it came to caring for the books. Geo
