lately I like 'em crazy

This was the long day for Sophie Crosier. She was slowly running out of money and it was probably time for her to finally find a job. She spent most of her money on pretty dresses and high heels but that was something she needed. When portal opened in front of her almost a month ago, she jumped in without even thinking and now she had nothing to wear. Well, at least she hadn't had before she bought all that clothes.

Sophie decided it was time for her to find a job, even if she didn't like to work. In fact, she has never worked anywhere, after she finished the school she joined Death Eaters and they were paying everything for her. So she wasn't even sure what she was able to do, killing and curing people probably wouldn't fit as the real job. She spent all day visiting different stores, bars, and restaurant but she didn't have much luck. Some of them didn't need workers and other just found her too annoying to accept her. Their lost, she was brilliant.

Since she was tired, Sophie decided to go back to that hotel and sleep but while walking she found herself in front of one bar. Well, the drink would be almost as good as sleeping. She entered in and the place was full as if they were giving free drinks. One man was sitting alone and she sat next to him without even asking for a permission. He was old, or at least she thought he was but that didn't bother her. "I'll have one glass of wine" she said to bartender once when he came to take her order.

Frankie had been in the bar for some time. A satchel stuffed with manuscripts was unceremoniously dumped on the bartop next to his pint of ale. It wasn’t often he took to sitting at the bar, especially in his current humour. His muse for writing had been absent of late and the frustration of the unfinished symphony was ever present in his mind. It was partly why he hadn’t noticed the woman occupying the seat next to him until she ordered.

Frankie didn’t mind that she sat next to him, had he known she’d referred to him as old he might not have been as kind in his approach to her. Old was someone like his mother, yet he would suppose that in the past few years he had became less inclined to indulge company. Since Lottie had died he had not involved himself much with the residents of the town despite owning and running a store. Maker, he barely remembered any of their names let alone their lives, if he thought about it. Lottie had been the sociable one, taking interest in their lives but Frankie had been content to finally have the freedom to settle down and be with the woman he loved, everyone else was meaningless.

But Lottie was dead, and all Frankie had was the shop, his music and a few friendly faces that attempted to fill the void.

Turning his head, pint mid-air he paused to look her over and chuckled.

“Only one?” he started. “You strike me as a lady accustomed to more than one.”

Sophie was really hoping that she would be able to enjoy in loneliness even if this man was sitting next to her. She sat here only because there were not free tables at this hole they called a bar and she didn't want to talk with him at all. But after she heard his words she raised her head and looked at him nonchalantly just to hide how much she wanted to curse him. Did he just allude to that she was an alcoholic? Sure, she enjoyed in alcohol but she liked to believe that she knew when to stop. And now here he was, telling her those stupid things.

Sophie gave him her best smile without breaking eye contact. "You strike me as way too old to be in this place but I still kept my mouth shut" she took a glass of wine in her hand when the bartender brought it to her and took a sip. She didn't say 'thank you'. She is not used to appreciating what people around her do.

"How old are you anyway? 50 years old? Am I close enough or you are even older?" Sophie asked curiously.

Frankie kept his expression friendly despite her icy demeanour. Her gaze was kept, even when Frankie drank the rest of his pint. He hadn’t meant her any offence, though as he thought about his words, he might have done so, inadvertently. As she spoke her retort he listened and set his glass down, chuckling.

Leaning on the bar Frankie smiled smugly at her. His tongue had gotten him into many foolish arguments, yet he hoped this one wouldn’t get him thrown out. He let out a sigh, debating if it was worth digging himself into a hole.

“Something like that,” he shrugged, refusing to answer her question. “In my realm you’d be called a ‘las puta’ which sounds pretty but isn’t. Though, I remember a few undeserving of the name.”

Ignoring her for a moment he turned back to the barman, ordering another pint for himself then settling back into his chair. His gaze fell back on his notes, scanning details and he seemed to return to his own business for a short moment.

“Talk of age or looks aside, you don’t seem to be enjoying today,” he offered, glancing her way briefly.

Sophie was slightly intrigued. This man, whoever he was, was so calm. She really gave her best to offend him with that comment about ages but he didn't even blink. Sophie knew nothing about him and to be honest, for one brief moment she was even thinking about the idea to leave him alone. She had really bad day and now, even she didn't feel like she was in the mood for this.

But then he said something she didn't quite understand and Sophie looked at him again curiously. "What was that supposed to mean? I have never heard of something like la put or whatever you just said. But" she took a sip of her wine before continuing, "it didn't sound like a compliment" even without her will smile appeared on her face.

She put out her wand from her purse and started playing with it. That wand was one of the very few things she had with her when she jumped in that portal. When Sophie came here, she wasn't even sure if she would be able to still use her magic but luckily, she was. She felt like without magic she would be lost.

"Oh, so now we are speaking again?" She looked at him for one brief moment. When he started looking at his papers, she was sure the conversation was over and she was completely fine with that but now they were. "I had a bad day," she said shortly because Sophie Crosier wasn't one of those pathetic people who couldn't wait to talk about their problems. As far as she learned, the best was to deal with problems was to ignore them until they are gone.

In his realm, they’d call it The Grand Game. Everything depended on how you played the ridiculous farce which had the unfortunate result in a few people and their families being wiped out completely. Frankie was born in the heart of it, he knew how to play this game.

He smirked as she deciphered the phrases meaning. “No, it is not,” he agreed quietly. Slowly he looked back to her travelled path and drew her attention with a jerk of his head. “You arrived flustered, irritated. Easily distinguished, because of the rhythm of your steps. They,” he paused, then waved a hand, “threw off my muse.”

His eyes returned to the bar, finding his newly drawn ale. Taking a sip, he noted her wand, a simple stick to his eyes but his homeland had similar folk. Mages they were called, and like wizards and mixed sort. He’d always been cautious of mages as he travelled but he still made friends with a few. At her question he shrugged, a sardonic grin creeping upwards, “I hadn’t realised we’d stopped mai mariposa.”

The Antivan chuckled as she eventually admitted the truth. Her day had apparently robbed her smile entirely. Nodding along with her following silence Frankie settled further into his chair. He didn’t speak directly to her; his focus was on the pen and paper on the bars top.

“Bad days happen. It’s the good days you need to look out for. They end, and the after-taste is more bitter than all the bad days combined.”

"Well, that is something new" Sophie leaned in her chair and crossed her legs. "People usually insult me after they meet me. But you managed to do that just after I ordered my drink" she looked at him and smiled and shook her head. "What made you do that? Was that my look? Damn it, I thought I look pretty" she tried to sound offended but that probably didn't work. There are many weaknesses Sophie had, but low self-esteem wasn't one of them.

She followed his gaze as if she would be able to see how she arrived. But then she shrugged and just smiled. "Nah, I usually walk like that, it's nothing new. Oh, you lost your muse because of me? I'm deeply sorry to hear that" in fact, she didn't feel sorry, not a little bit. She didn't care about his muse or nonsenses like that, if he was the true writer or whatever he was, there would be nothing and no one who could distract him. "You are the writer? What do you write about? About the ways old man can insult the young innocent woman?"

"Well, when the person stops looking at you and start doing something else, it usually means the conversation is done" she took a sip of her wine and then frowned at him. "Okay, stop using words that I have no idea what should mean, it's not funny Muggle" well, maybe he wasn't a Muggle but he definitely acted like one. People who had magic were just... Above anyone else. There is some kind of elegance in them and this grandpa didn't have that, so naturally, she assumed he was a Muggle or whichever word they used here for people who don't have magic in them.

"Was it some inspiring quote or you just made it up? Whatever it was, it was stupid. I don't believe in good days. Just bad days and days that are less bad. That's it." She shrugged. "But I'll solve my problem soon. I guess I'll just have to use Imperius to force someone to give me the damn job. It shouldn't be really hard, I used that a lot in the past" she may finish in jail if she really does that' but for now, she didn't have any other idea how to find the job.

She’s prickly the Prince thought, chuckling quietly. Leaning an arm on the bar, Frankie rested his head on his knuckles. His grin grew filthy, amused by how he’d been able to ruffle her feathers so easily. She’d have been assassinated early on if this had been a Royal engagement. So would I if I actually showed up, he briefly thought.

“Better that I give you a true impression of what sort I am, than give you any false hope,” he admitted. Again, he chuckled but nodded in agreement. “Pretty indeed but I’m afraid all that is lost on me since, apparently I’m old.” He mocked irritation, but her superior attitude amused him and the fact she’d now taken an interest in a discourse might provide a brief respite.

“You did. Your steps were off-beat and the wrong pitch.” Sniggering back at her he added, teasing her a little. “Like an elephant attempting to sneak across a library floor. … People must tremble when they hear you no?” He nodded down at his guitar. “I’m a musician, I own a store in town.”

Shaking his head, Frankie wagged a finger at the witch. His grin widening as he laughed off the apparent insult. He’d been called far worse things in his life, from his closest friends mostly so the musician shrugged it off. He rose his hands in mock surrender, offering her an explaination.

“It meant Butterfly but fair enough, less Antivan I promise. And no, I’ve just had more experience.” His brow furrowed suddenly, confused by her phrase. “Imperius? For those of us from lands faaaar form here.”

For someone to Sophie unknown reason, this grandpa didn't look even a little bit annoyed. In fact, he looked like all of this was funny to him and that made her annoyed. She was not used to this, usually, she was the one to mock and annoy others. When did that change? Did she come to some kind of damn alternative universe or something like that? But the situation and this man were in some weird was impressive. That was probably the reason why she didn't tell him to go to hell and walked away, at least not yet.

"So you are the sort of people with bad behavior and without even the simplest manners? Interesting." Sophie shook her head and smiled and after that finished her glass of the wine. She needed more drink, a lot more. But she remembered his comment about her being the woman for more than one glass so she didn't order another drink just to prove he was wrong. "Not apparently honey, you are definitely old. You could probably be my great grandfather" she offered him her the most innocent smile. "But I must agree with you, I really am pretty" and modest, but that wasn't in the question.

"Like an elephant? Did you really just compared me with the damn elephant?" She was truly, without any doubt shocked. In 21 years she heard a lot of comments about herself, most of them were bad but no one ever compared her to the elephant. She decided that she will need that second glass of wine after all so she called the waiter and ordered the drink. "Okay, this elephant knows something about musicians since I slept with few of them and you definitely don't look like one. They are romantic, pathetic and all that but you... You are just rude" she shook her head.

"Well, I have never had to work for money so I'm pretty new in all of this and apparently I'm not doing very well, at least for now" she looked at him confused for a second and then remembered he is not from her world so she should be confused if he knew what Imperius was. But she smiled immediately and looked at him again.

"It's one of my favorite curses. You can force people to do whatever they want. In my world, it's one of three Unforgivable Curses but well, I like it a lot. It makes life a lot easier for my species, so I think everyone who doesn't use it is stupid."

She was prickly the Prince thought, chuckling quietly. Leaning on arm on the bar, Frankie rested his head on his knuckles. His grin grew filthy, amused by how he’d been able to ruffle her feathers so easily. Frankie wasn’t always such an ass, sometimes he genuinely cared yet, those moments were few and far between.

“Better that I give you a true impression of what I am, than give you any false hope,” he admitted chuckling, but he nodded in agreement. “Pretty indeed but I’m afraid all that is lost on an old wretch.”

And then the other shoe dropped, and Frankie couldn’t help the filthy grin. Her shocked, blank expression at his words was priceless. A sore nerve was it? It certainly appeared so as he listened and watched her order again. Her outrage was furthered by her clipped response and a commonly heard ending. Although his chuckles weren’t loud, they certainly held an authoritative knowing. “Again, you jump to assumptions of my character my dear. I made no indication of your weight or size.” His charming air remained as he took another deep draw.

“Musicians are not the same, if they were, everything would sound the same,” he added curtly, his face momentarily turning to disgust. “How incredibly dull.”

His gaze returned to hers as she smiled so easily, as if comforted by her ability. It didn’t unnerve the Prince, he’d had his encounters with mages from his own realm. Yet, the type of magic she spoke of was outlawed in most states, including his own for good reason. Frankie was a firm believer in Free Will and this curse, this spell was one to be wary of. Yet his years of living and play the grand Game held his face neutral.

“Ah, yes, there are a lot of stupid people however. Perhaps not the best spell to immediately cast.”

lately I like 'em crazy
Sophie realized he was doing this on purpose. This was her game, she was the one who usually controls everything and now, she became player. She needed to change that very soon or this old man would start thinking he can do everything. How would people here react if they see him on the floor in agony while she stands above him with her wand? Probably not very well and Sophie was smart enough to know she should be on her best behavior. They were still creatures here that she didn't understand and she didn't need enemies who could defeat her. Better safe than sorry.

So Sophie smiled somehow but it was more like the painfull grimace on her face. "Yes yes, I know. You don't want me to think you are my Prince Charmin or whatever. Message received." Sophie smiled truly this time and shook her head. "Don't worry, even old people can see how pretty I am."

"You better not because you certainly know how to make the girl feel bad about her look." She frowned and took another sip of her drink. "So tell me, just out of curiosity, what was supposed to mean that I'm like the elephant then? I know elephants are scared of mice, but I find them to be really cute little creatures." So this was making him annoyed? She tried to insult him telling him he was old and what not but nothing worked. But as soon as she made a bad comment about musicians he seemed to get angry. That made her smile even more.

"They are not really the same" Sophie rolled her eyes. "Some of them like women, some men and some both for example. You see, I'm not stupid, I know the difference between musicians." Sophie knew very well he didn't meant that but it was too good not to say. She sighed and looked at him. "Okay, then tell me how are you different than others who do the same job as you?"

Did he really try to teach her a lesson about spells? Did this have something with moral and ethics? She almost shivered. "I don't want to use it now. Not because I care what others would think about me but because if I use the spell that means I am not good enough to find a job on... legal way."
