Finally, some time alone.

Roland was with Robin. Zelena insisted something about a day out while Mummy got used to things. You spoke like that around a child. Conversation was full of mummies and daddies and toys, and a lot about what mummy had been through. Oh, she thought. Little Roland had no bloody idea what mummy had been through.

It had been a week. A week since the baby. A week since she'd stormed the hospital, Rumple still at her beck and call. A week since she'd almost created her spell. A week since it had all gone wrong.

She sat at the diner, her hand going to the pendant around her neck.

She had nothing to worry about, of course. God, it was almost as good as when she’d been a midwife! It was like child’s play. Zelena had never really paid much interest to Regina’s boyfriend’s band before, but they seemed to accept her for Marian and some careful listening had educated her about them - enough to pass for the dead maid, anyway. That wasn’t to say she didn’t have history with them already. One she’d turned into a monkey and Robin she’d met in Oz - met being a polite term. Her lips pursed. How come Regina had to go for him, out of all the outlaws - the one that had bested her? She’d been defeated by her own bloody bow and arrow. I knew I should’ve done something with that. Walsh had been too good a hoarder for his own good, let alone hers. All kinds of toot had just been left lying around in that room.

That said, she’d have liked the same bow and arrow against the snow monster. She’d grabbed one, but if Regina hadn’t been there...‘Marian’ shivered. It was like Rumple's attempt on her life all over again. Feeling vulnerable, isolated with no power to protect herself. It was a good thing no one had known she was the Wicked Witch anyway; if people knew that the woman behind wicked always wins had been subdued so easily.... Regina wouldn’t have let me die anyway. Even if she knew. She didn’t before. Not when Zelena had been cowering under her, her plan destroyed, Rumple moments away from killing her and that bloody sprog back in its parents’ arms.

She checked herself. It was a baby. Not a sprog. Maybe it was just because she’d been living with Roland day in day out, playing and cuddling and doing everything a mother was meant to do, but the idea now made her uncomfortable after the neverending adoration she got. A little boy was wrapping himself around her legs in a hug now on a daily basis. It was easier to sacrifice one when you didn’t know any children personally. She’d seen them as the product of twu luv, the kind that was out of her reach - because obviously that had all been part of a larger plan, a plan she’d been clever enough to see through. Doubts crept into her mind, the old uncertainty about that. Anyway. That was in the past, and part of the reason she'd been prepared to murder Marian in cold blood, to be honest. Anything to stay alive.

Not a sprog, then, but still a failed plan.

Regina really was saving everyone. She was so irritatingly virtuous. She'd have to work harder to steal Robin's heart - trip him up at every step, drag him back to her. But where was the Evil Queen she could remember? She’d have to show Storybrooke how Regina really was. Maybe then she would lose the support of her friends, lose the brat - the witch could finally get her justice. Finally, even when it was all falling apart and she didn’t know how the hell she was going to live like this long term, as a dutiful little wife in a sodding tent in the sodding woods and when Regina kept talking about sodding forgiveness like it was even possible for them to get on when she had everything and Zelena had nothing...

Oh, she'd turn that around. She'd reveal Regina's inner darkness if that was the last thing she did, while stealing her boyfriend's heart. How...ultimate. Not as grand as the time travel spell, but it would still hurt. Otherwise all of this? It was for nothing. She had to get some result out of this. She had to.

She was being asked something by a waitress. "Oh - um - cocoa, please." Bit too early in the day even for whiskey. But she hesitated, even after the waitress left, and turned to the person sitting next to her. Time to figure out what Storybrooke thought. "Um, excuse me?" Manners. They were new. "Could I ask you something, please? It's about the Wicked Witch."

Well well well. Wasn’t Camelot the bustling castle.

Zelena watched everyone from under her pillar, peasant and noble alike. Various comments came to mind as she watched them - mostly snarky, because she was in a bad mood. The witch had been in a bad mood since she’d got here with that bloody wand, but the fact she couldn’t voice said comments just made it a whole lot worse. She’d always had something of the gift of the gab, but even that had been taken from her when sister dear got in the way. Hmm. Wit or not, maybe not her brightest moment to threaten Emma as she had to Regina - saying she’d tell Arthur. Hadn’t that gone tits up. Several days later and she was still under the muting spell and with that bloody cuff on her wrist there was nothing she could do about it, while everyone ran around trying to fix the latest Dark One.

That was how she was here - they had all been so busy up Merlin’s tower that she could slip away. Shame, really. Zelena had always liked Rumple as the Dark One. Emma was just disappointing. She wondered if the Darkness should consider taking interviews. She’d be a good Dark One, she thought; it was just a pity she preferred working under her own agency, being her own boss. Oh, please. Give her a break. Aside from the pendant of the Sisterhood she’d never had to answer to any object and she was hardly going to start doing that now. Also, considering what she’d done to Rumple over the years, having a copy in her head would be a trip down memory lane she’d rather not have.

The only thing she liked about this place was the suitably medieval garb they'd found for her. Kudos to her sister. She might stop her from talking, but she could’ve dressed the witch in a burlap sack. As it was she liked to think the dress and accompanying cloak brought out her eyes. She looked down at herself with mild approval. Who knew that blue coordinated just as well as green?

Her mind had wondered, but it was clear that with Regina in charge she was never going to get her own way. Well - there was no chance of a baby now, but she sensed this was just the start of a rather unpleasant little life her sister had planned for her. No: this wasn’t the end. She’d be kept under lock and key for the rest of their stay in Camelot, for the rest of the time in Storybrooke even. Regina might’ve been at the thick end of the family, Zelena thought, but she was still clever enough to know how to keep a witch under guard. In the shadow of the pillar she clenched her fists. In Storybrooke there were only a few places she could go, the whole place kept secure by the town line. But here….she needed to find a way to escape, and now before they all went back to Storybrooke. There was more room to escape here, more places to run to. As soon as she got out of this bloody castle things would already be on the up. She would still be without her magic, but she was more than prepared to lie, cheat and use any method necessary to coax someone to get it off her. Spin a sob story, perhaps, of a big bad Wicked Witch. Her eyes glinted. Or get a sharp enough instrument…

But all of that relied on getting out. Her eyes scanned the courtyard. She had a time limit; there were always things to do as a handmaiden, apparently, that she had never even thought about before, and Regina would notice. Sooner or later she’d be asked to hurry along to her duties. Ugh. She rolled her eyes. If she had to serve another jug of something to her sister and her motley crew as part of her ‘handmaiden' act she thought she might just swallow her own eye of newt. But there were plenty of people here by the looks of things, and she might, if she was lucky, be able to blend in with the rest…she looked around. These castles always had a secret passage or two…but where?

She couldn’t investigate anything here. There were too many people. But the witch caught a glimpse of something shining in a little room off the courtyard - a metallic glimmer. Armoury? Possibly. After a momentary glance around her she went to investigate, slipping through the door.

It was a suit of armour that, in that particular spot, had hit the light in such a way, but if she was looking for a weapon she was hardly going to find one here. The suit was old, more decorative, and it looked like some sort of study - an office for the stewards and official ministers for the king. There were bookshelves and desks, and her eyes roved over them hungrily. Secret passages, secret passages…she stole over to the wall, lifting a dusty tapestry and feeling the wall behind.
Hey, she had to start somewhere.

Leaves rustled across the empty strip of road, twitching and lightly skimming across the asphalt. But as a shadow descended and the winds picked up they leapt to a skip, to a jump, to a tiny cyclone -

Zelena landed lightly on her feet, dismounting her broomstick swiftly in a practised bound across the road. She exhaled, going to fix her hat. A whistling noise sliced through the air and she turned just in time to see a secondary broomstick follow like a faithful dog, swooping down to her feet. She took the second broom under her arm, propping it securely against a signpost - and then took her own, letting her fingers cross the familiar old whorls in the wood.

She'd lost count of how many times she'd flown this thing. She still remembered picking a broomstick of all things to fly on. It had seemed...fitting. Oh, Mother - the woman she had called mother, anyway - had stopped her father's bullying when she was alive. She tried to shield Zelena from the disagreements and from most of the tasks that robbed her of her childhood and confined her to the house. There had always been talks then of hiding and concealing and curses but they stopped whenever she'd entered the room, her mother shooting her father a look over her head that Zelena had never stopped to question, even when the silence bored into her ears and she'd taken her toys somewhere else only for the voices to start as soon as she'd left the room.

But when her mother passed? Housework was pulling her weight, according to her father - despite how young she was. So Zelena had spent her childhood - had spent all of her life, at that point - looking after her father and tending to their little hovel in the middle of nowhere. She'd been the one hauling in the firewood, fetching the water, sweeping and cleaning...and brushing away the dust and the dirt.

A broomstick had felt like some sort of poetic justice, after all that; weaponising the one thing that she'd been forced to use as a child whether she liked it or not. This one was old - the same one from Oz, the same one that had swooped and dived over many a munchkin village before now. She stood it upright, her eyes slipping down the wood to the straw end. Now? The broom would be going over cars and roads and another landscape entirely. It was a good training route, actually. A healthy amount of things to learn to avoid, and a lot of open space and sky.

This wasn't just an opportunity to teach, in Zelena's view. She'd warmed to Miss Riddle-Lestrange. Maybe if things had been different she would have become like Delphi, if not for how things had played out. She was young enough to be her daughter as it was, and they were so similar she could be, she reflected. And maybe it was something about that, but Zelena found herself feeling generous. No other witch that she could tell used a broomstick, but they should - and some part of her was happy to share that skill instead of keeping it to herself. Hence today, hence the two broomsticks. It was different to the usual feelings of selfishness and miser-like behaviour she knew of herself, but it worked. With Delphini, that was. But it was mostly just an excuse to get chatting with her again.

Zelena didn't have that many mutual friends that she could trust implicitly. It came, she found, with the Unbreakable Vow. She looked down at her wrist, to the faint crisscross line marks there. Nifty little device, that was. Perhaps others would feel the weight of death hanging over their heads, but Zelena found it a little bit of a naughty buzz. This wasn't the braiding-hair, friendship-bracelets version of friendship that the obnoxious heroes went through. Theirs was still based on their pact, the promise to save Delphini's father and get him back. It was different - more fitting of their aims, their shared ambitions, the dark magic that ran through their veins. And honestly Zelena wouldn't have it like that anyway. Where was the fun in that? Where was the excitement in policing themselves, staying on the straight and narrow when they had plenty to do that - although wasn't illegal - was far more...well, witchy?

Someone had chosen her. And maybe, just maybe, she could use that to stop Delphini making the same mistakes she did.

Speaking of which...she shot a green flare into the sky with a flick of her fingers, a signifier hovering above this part of Storybrooke and then moments later fizzling out into sparks.

Half a pint of orange juice and one moving baby. Tick and tick. Job done.

Zelena walked back from the Charmings', bundling her coat around her. "'You're so lucky to have such a brave husband'," she muttered under her breath in the false tone she'd used before - the voice not of the Wicked Witch but of little Zelena, the eager to please little midwife armed with fruit juice of all things.

Really, becoming a midwife was just inspired - if she said it herself. Not only could she keep a eye on that bun in Snow White's oven and keep the bloody thing alive long enough for the spell but she got news on the manhunt too! It made it doubly worth her while. Of course, there wasn't any actual news, but that was a good thing. The longer she could stay in close proximity to the child the better. Who knew - maybe she'd actually be there at the birth, and they'd never find out who she was until the moment she took their baby away from them. Her blue eyes flashed, a smile curling over her face. If she kept the little lapels and the blazers from the Good Person clothing line, that was...and if they didn't pick up on any clues.

But that was where it got better. It really was going without a hitch! There wasn't a word spoken against her. She rolled her eyes. Honestly. Who would trust a woman who turned up during the missing year with practically no backstory that no one's ever heard of? Oh, Zelena had planned all of those things. She'd charm anyone who looked trustworthy enough to sing her praises if the Charmings needed proof. But the amazing thing was that they didn't. Not at all. From talking at the diner the witch had almost effortlessly incorporated herself into the household with no questions asked. God, no wonder Regina had managed to get the better of them in the first curse. She was lacking in magical skill and ability but what was that, against them - idiots extraordinaire? Pfft. Her victory over them as practically worthless. What did Snow White think? She was accepting Zelena on what - the off chance that they used to weave daisy chains and plait each other's hair during the 'missing year'?

Oh yeah. Snow White was creating a whole new person. She'd just failed to mention that this whole new person wouldn't be whole for very long, or indeed actually be a person when she was done with the little sprog. Like she'd said to Rumple - sin of omission. Not the best kind, but by far the most lucrative.

Speaking of her little pet...she didn't like to leave him for long periods. Rushing over to Snow White's with a heap of groceries and enough orange juice to have that baby practically bursting out of the womb had left her in the lurch for too long, and it was time to go home and find him something to eat and check he was still vaguely lucid. She'd had to go, with that trace of panic in Snow White's voice that made her panic for a moment too. What if the baby were to die before then? The witch hadn't considered that. So she'd run over, hoping that for God's sake the baby just held on for a bit longer. She'd have to return after feeding the Dark One, of course, but this provided a temporary reprieve from Snow White. The mother to be, she thought with glee, couldn't survive without her. So dependent. So willing. Exactly how she wanted her.

If anything, she'd realised from this experience that she never wanted to get pregnant. Not that there were any takers in that department, of course, not right now, but it really was a sorry state of affairs if Snow White's pregnancy was anything to go by. Being dependent on others, going around looking like a beached whale. It was just a stupid -

- Mistake. Zelena had turned the corner and stumbled straight into someone. She stepped back, recovering. "Oh!" She looked up, only to stare. No no no. For a terrible split second she suddenly realised who she'd bumped into. "Jef - I'm so sorry!" she blurted, suddenly regressing back into character - but too late. But they were at such close quarters it was obvious who she was talking to.

There was no backing out of this.

- Zelena slammed the door behind her. The clang of metal meeting stone rose in a blare of noise, only to meet a stubborn wall of silence. Her heels clicked softly on the bare stone, each a steady beat against the floor.

The Enchanted Forest. She was finally here. Outside she could hear the faint shrieks of the monkeys - probably terrorising another village nearby. It wasn't her concern. This world would be hers, rightfully hers, but her thoughts were still far, far away, back at the castle, back with her sister and her lovely little friends…old bowls and cups clinked gently as she walked. She was carrying a tray, the remnants of a certain someone's latest meal.

The Dark One was still safe and sound in his cage. And completely mad, of course. Zelena felt an itch at the corner of her mouth - the beginnings of a smile - but it was soon tempered. Oh, Rumple. If only he hadn't absorbed his son, if only he had let that waste of space go....and then perhaps she would be dealing with someone she could actually have a conversation with. Someone who knew where he was and knew how powerless he was to stop her. It was fun, certainly - and such a novelty to see him lose control. And this way she didn’t have him fighting against her as much as he would’ve done if he were sane...but the realisation about what was happening to him was a bit too buried. A little too filed away. She wanted to see his emotions brought right up to the surface....

It was easily fixed. As soon as everything was in position she could work on him, tease out the tendrils of sanity that still lay under the surface so he could understand, fully understand, what she was doing and his role, if he wanted to take it. Even if he didn't, she'd go ahead anyway - but that wasn't the point. This wasn't meant to be permanent.

None of it was.

It was a shame they'd had to move out of Regina's castle when sister dear had come along, but Zelena had been getting bored anyway. Playing house got a bit boring when there weren't any dollies to play with. After throughly ransacking her sister's jewellery collection (onyx, black pearl and diamond - but none of those suited her particularly emerald colouring) and finding nothing to her liking, and having tried on every dress she could find, there was comparatively little to do. She didn't know this place, didn't have any attachment to it, so that limited the enjoyment she could get from burning it down or stamping on its ashes. And all of those balconies and open air corridors - it really wasn't her thing. Really, either architecture in the Enchanted Forest had done a suicidal nosedive or Regina had been getting sloppy, but better that she was with Rumple in his cosy castle, fine-tuning her ingredients in comfort and security than scurrying around trying to defend herself in a frankly hideous home.

The fire crackled in the grate as the witch entered one of the halls. Stone turned to carpet, dull walls turned to faded drapes and tapestries. This place was a home away from home as it was, almost. It was funny. She could remember turning up here a dozen times for Rumple’s lessons - heart pulling, heart crushing, replication of objects, teleportation...and she'd dreamt then about coming back, a witch fully in her prime. And here she was. Zelena. All over again, bigger and better than before. The student becoming the master. And the student bringing a friend, too.

The little brother she never had.

"Still spinning," she announced as she walked in, her dress rustling as she moved. "Not enough for a brain just yet, but we'll see. You should hear him." Her mouth twisted in derision. His dagger, her emerald pendant; she knew to keep the source of her power protected. Why didn't he? "He's still babbling. All day every day, far as I can tell. I was thinking of moving him up here." She set the tray down on the table with a clatter, dusting her green hands of it before turning around in the space. "He'd really brighten up that corner. Add a touch of something."
